A century ago, New York City was a major brewing center, home to more than one hundred breweries. The last of those great breweries, Schaefer and Rheingold, closed their doors in 1976, leaving the city without a brewery for the first time since the early 1600s. Today, there are five craft breweries in the city that are part of a national movement based on the brewing traditions founded in Europe. Ironically, the European brewers are now looking to America for their inspiration. A special tasting of Brooklyn Brewery beers will follow the program.

Empire Brewing Company opened in 1994 in Syracuse, NY. Seventeen years later, and after multiple national and international awards, the company has a successful restaurant, bar and grill in downtownSyracuse, and has expanded their brewing efforts to Brooklyn. The company puts a high priority on the use of local ingredients in their beer, using ingredients from its garden in Cazenovia. Additionally, The Empire Brewing Company is the first business in Central New York to use 100% New York State produced renewable energy. Empire Brewing Company has won many awards over the years at The Great American Beer Festival, including two gold medals in 2002 for their German-Style Marzen/Oktoberfest and their German-Style Schwarzbier. They have also won multiple awards at the World Beer Cup.

The tastings will feature: Captain Kolsch, a beer that is low in bitterness, but packed full of malty rich flavors with a touch of citrus; Liquid Gold, a full flavored craft brewed beer, brewed with imported German malts and US grown hops and a specially imported Belgian yeast strain; and Pale Ale, loaded with US-grown Cascade, Crystal, and Columbus hops, with notes of citrus, pine, a noticeable bitterness, and a touch of malty backbone to help balance it out.

Scott Vacarro, began brewing beers at the young age of 17, before he was legally allowed to drink! What began as a humble start, brewing five-gallon batches of beer on a kitchen stove-top, blossomed into a fulfilling career of brewing beer and opening Captain Lawrence Brewing Company in Pleasantville, NY. ScottVacarro attended the Fermentation Science Program at UC Davis. After graduating, he worked for Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and the Colorado Brewery. After the Colorado Brewery closed, he knew he wanted to open his own brewery. The original Captain Lawrence Brewery opened in 2006, and is named after Captain Lawrence Drive, the street where Vacarro grew up. After much success, Vacarro recently expanded the brewery into a new location in Elmsford, NY with more brewing capacity and a large tasting room. The Captain Lawrence Brewery has won a number of awards from the Great American Beer Festival, including a gold medal in 2009 for its Rosso E Marrone, American Style Sour Ale.

The tastings will feature: Genesee Cream Ale, an American original with the flavor of an ale and the smoothness of a lager; Dundee Pilsner, a traditional German Pilsner brewed with noble saaz hops, Moravian malt and premium Pilsner malt for a rich, crisp taste and a smooth finish; the award winning Dundee Pale Bock, a traditional German Maibock with the finest malted barley and Czech hops and with a crisp taste, malty-sweet aroma, clean finish and deep golden hue; Dundee Stout, a smooth and classic sweet dark rich brew combining roasted malts and hops and bringing the chocolate and coffee flavors to life; and Dundee India Pale Ale, a balanced true pale ale with Cascade, Columbus, and Amarillo hops and with a citrusy aroma and a smooth crisp finish.

Founded in 1878, The Genesee Brewing Company, based in Rochester, New York, is one of the largest and oldest continually operating breweries in the United States. The Brewery makes the Genesee line of beers, including the iconic Genesee, the refreshing Genny Light, and the original Genesee Cream Ale. The Genesee Brewing Company is part of North American Breweries, the largest independently owned beer company in the United States.

Heartland Brewery opened as New York's first American style brewpub on Union Square in 1995 and has been igniting New Yorker's passion for craft beers ever since. Heartland has consistently brewed New York's freshest craft beers, including Heartland's classic six as well as a wide range of unique seasonal brews.

The tasting will feature Nut Brown Ale, with a rich mahogany hue and subtle hints of both chocolate and coffee; CascaZilla (Cas-kuh-zil-uh), a red ale with caramel malt and Cascade Hops; and Apricot Wheat Ale, an easy-drinking wheat beer is light in color and body with a hint of apricot.

In December 1998, Dan Mitchell, the founder of the Ithaca Beer Company, created the first local brewery inIthaca that exemplifies “The Spirit of the Finger Lakes.” Recently awarded two medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado in 2008, Ithaca Beer Company now sells beer throughout New York State, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Ohio.
