Masterpiece London 2012 attracts cream of collectors

The impressive calibre of serious national and international collectors to have visited Masterpiece London 2012 in the first four days since its opening confirms the fair’s pivotal role in cementing London’s position at the centre of the art world. As Masterpiece London moves into its third year, it is clear the fair has reached a level of maturity and significance which few, including the world’s top collectors and museum curators, can afford to ignore.

Masterpiece London offers the world’s best in fine and decorative arts and bespoke collectors’ items. According to Masterpiece London Chairman, Philip Hewat-Jaboor, “This year the fair has attracted many of the most serious collectors, curators and patrons from the Middle East, the Far East, Europe, America and Canada. We’ve seen an incredibly high calibre of visitor, including Lord Thompson, Sheikh Al-Thani, Rose Tarlow, Charles Saatchi, Terence Conran and Jeffery Archer to name a few.”

Many more Americans have been seen at the fair this year, and co-founder Harry Apter from Apter-Fredericks has remarked on how the fair has provided an opportunity to reconnect with collectors he hasn’t seen in five to ten years. One such New York collector is Roy Zuckerberg, who has experienced the fair since its inception: “There’s a wonderful crowd at Masterpiece London. As a collector the fair is excellent and gets a little better every year…and I’m a three-year veteran.”

Important sales have included historic 18th century furniture from a pair of Robert Adam benches made for Kenwood House (Godson & Coles) to a desk from Carlton House (Mallett). Antiquities have fared well with the sale of a £1 million large wooden statue of a high-ranking Egyptian official, 2570-2350BC (Sycomore Ancient Art) and jewellery exhibitors have had an excellent fair with many sales reported including a pair of diamond and emerald JAR earrings and a pearl and diamond necklace for over £1 million (Symbolic & Chase).

The fair’s aim is to make traditional disciplines exciting to a new and discerning group of collectors by presenting it in an imaginative and original way. One happy visitor commented the fair is “just like the V&A except the labels are better and you can buy things!”
