The whole world jumped on the UK bandwagon for the Olympics, but we've always been Anglophiles at Whom You Know! Merrell continues their tradition of excellence with a modern twist: New Arcadians Emerging UK Architects is certain to impress and enlighten the world. Right from its color that boasts geometric intelligence and style of Regent's Place Pavilion, you know this is not a coffee table book that should just sit on the coffee table. You're going to want to actually READ it!

We've featured a lot of prominent American architects like Campion Platt, Peter Pennoyer and Andre Kikoski, among others, so today we extend our interest in this discipline to across the pond. What do we like about this book?  Eighteen new firms are profiled complete with interviews and we don't know any yet, but naturally are predisposed to like anyone with the name Duggan, as if you go back far enough they might be related to Peachy!  They have quite a modern flair.  One project they display is a compact house-and anyone that lives in Manhattan (well we suppose many but of course not everyone!) is pressed for space, and will have an appreciation for this project.  We like how the book is color-coded by architect.

The East Reef Landmark Promenade, featured on page 98-99, is absolutely stunning and looks like it is in Essex of the UK.  So far, we don't know it but we do know Essex in Connecticut, where Peachy used to chat about with her mentor, Charles Kuralt.  If any of you in the UK come to New England (not New York-New England is CT, MA, RI, ME, NH and VT) you will be amazed by how all of our towns have the same names as yours...obviously the ENGLISH settled New England, including the town in which Peachy grew up.

You'll see a lot of creativity on display in this work, and it all is intelligent-nothing over-the-top ridiculous that doesn't make sense.  It's not all in the UK though-for example, the Xi'an International Horticultural Expo is in China and it reminds us a bit of origami.  Real life scale, that is.  We adore London's Largest Living Room (Somerset House), Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre) and liked Carbon Drive (Trafalgar Square).  Everything is nice and neat throughout this book and we love the sense of order that is artistically driven.

Young architects in the UK are making a name for themselves, not just because of the buildings they design, but also because of the ethos they share – one that embraces concern for the environment and makes a virtue of limited budgets. In New Arcadians, Lucy Bullivant profiles 18 cutting-edge UK-based practices, presenting recent key projects as well as interviews with the architects. The architects’ ecological awareness is evident in a wide range of schemes, from Nord’s Shingle House in Dungeness, Kent, which makes use of sustainable and recyclable materials, to GroundLab’s Flowing Gardens for the 2011 World Horticultural Expo at Xi’an, China, an inspiring example of urban regeneration. Other projects employ ecologically intelligent building materials or demonstrate a commitment to protecting and increasing biodiversity. Complete with an introduction exploring key trends in contemporary British architecture and full biographies of all the featured practices, New Arcadians is an exciting overview of the work and attitudes of a rising generation of UK architects who are reinvigorating the profession.
