As an elementary teacher, I always want to teach about the different holidays we celebrate in America. Some of the questions I couldn't always answer were about the great icons Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty. The icon section of the book did a wonderful job explaining how these two got their start. I can now better explain to my students when we are learning about the different American holidays. I was also able to get a better understanding about the patriotic holidays America celebrates such as Columbus Day and Flag Day. Normally I skim through introductions of most books, but not with this one. I learned so many new things I could then teach my students. I couldn't believe how much I didn't know, or may have forgotten since taking history classes. If you know of anyone who is patriotic, this is a perfect book for them. I highly recommend it!

I am a true patriot. Patriotic Holidays are some of my favorite. Memorial Day, now I learned is also called Decoration Day, in my town is a big deal. We have a terrific parade and ceremony that pays tribute to our fallen soldiers. On July 4th we head to the beach for a fireworks show with USA flashing in the sky. Veterans Day is the day after my birthday so I can never forget. Learning about how important this holiday is make me sad that most people and companies do not recognize it as they one did. This book pays tribute to these 6 patriotic holidays through cards, art, and posters that were created for each holiday. Learn the history of each of these holidays and more. See it through the eyes of the artists that created these pieces to celebrate.

With Election Day around the corner and Veteran's Day soon after, it is natural to be feeling extra patriotic these days. You may also start wondering about the origins and history of America's holidays. The husband and wife team John Wesley and Sandra Lynn Thomas have authored a wonderful book called America's Patriotic Holidays, that will answer any questions you may have. With beautiful illustrations, this book brings the history of these holidays alive. You will be fascinated by the rich history of our country and how these holidays came to be. The book goes into great detail about each of the federal holidays. It even explains the origins of Flag Day. After reading this book, you will be so proud to be an American! It gave me a real sense of pride and happiness. Now when each federal holiday comes to pass, I will really know what I am celebrating!

Get out the flag and start waving! Or singing, since this gorgeous tracking of our nation's history gets out the lyrics, as well as the visuals. "America's Patriotic Holidays" serves to remind us of our colorful (literally) attention to detail as a country, in love with our holidays. With a vast collection of appropriate postcards, and posters, the authors have compiled a stunning array of entertaining facts, all true, that surround each special day. Even some days, not nationally declared as holidays (like President Lincoln's birthday), are documented in this expansive book. Patriotism , with songs we all have heard from our childhood, and stories surrounding our imagery as a fledgling nation, rings true. It's a little bit of nostalgia, steeped in history, with a good helping of "Wow".  Schiffer as a publishing company, provides it's market with titles that seem to touch all bases. This is one of them that would be a perfect gift to lots of people: teachers, students, lovers of ephemera. It's a must-have for grade school children, and for the rest of us who love Uncle Sam. Don't wait until the Fourth of July to get your copy.

Whom You Know Highly Recommends America's Patriotic Holidays!
