RESULTS: Sotheby's Prints Sale in New York

Sotheby’s Prints sale on Friday brought a strong total of $11,740,940, well within the pre-sale estimate. Andy Warhol dominated the sale, with six of the top lots sold comprised by his complete sets. All six, featuring some of the most iconic images of 20th Century art, sold within or above pre-sale estimates. The top lot sold was Marilyn Monroe, which included the original stamp-numbered cardboard box from 1967 and sold for $1,650,500, followed by Mao, which realized $722,500. The timely and relevant Andy Warhol print, The Scream (After Munch), sold for $302,500, just a week after Munch’s The Scream went on view at the Museum of Modern Art.

Mary Bartow, Senior Vice President, Print Department, says: “We are thrilled with the results of Friday’s sale, which proved that there is still a strong market for prints and a broad range of interest in the category, especially for Warhol. Over 90% of lots sold at or above their pre-sale estimate and almost 80% of lots sold. There was active bidding throughout the sale, and we had great international participation.”
