I was fortunate to dive the largest living system on the planet, the Great Barrier Reef, in 2009. I still remember the sense of wonder at being in the presence of something so grand and majestic. BBC’s “Great Barrier Reef” brought those fond memories back. It helped me remember how I felt the first time I witnessed this unique underwater world, so different from what we see in the Caribbean or Mexico. BBC’s documentary informs on the workings of this complex ecosystem, from its creation to its natural development. It is a visually striking production which captures the diverse coral and fish life of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The photography is exceptional and the documentary is edited to keep the viewer’s attention on the miracles of Earth it unveils. BBC does a great educational and visual service to bring this world, so far away from the reach of most people, into our homes.

Breathtaking! My daughter and I just love watching videos about nature. I think that at age five she is blown away by the animal kingdom and lands she does not know, yet. So watching the BBC’s Great Barrier Reef DVD took her to an entirely new world under the sea. I love this in-depth look into the largest and most diverse reef system in the world. My favorite parts were those that they used time lapse so you get to see things happen in a minute that may take days or weeks to happen. You really get up close and personal with all of the fish, plant life and more. Some of it is jaw-dropping while others scenes make you jump in your seat. You really get lost in this magical world that is so eloquently narrated. When you think of how each piece of the puzzle fits together to keep this underworld flourishing, it is amazing that it has survived this long.

Far offshore, and vast, with an expanse that nears 2000 kilometers long, the Great Barrier Reef fascinates and enthralls with its underwater wonderland. Nemo fans large and small who enjoy intense visuals and superb cinematography will be over the moon with this BBC production. The production crew spent over 600 hours underwater, deploying little robot cams to depths never seen or filmed. Captured with minimal disturbance to the environment, visions of magical creatures in their home and in their neighborhoods become as captivating as you've never seen. Watch coral gardens blissfully ignored by whales, and sharks feeding politely on turtle carcasses. In an extremely populated world, the BBC dissects each element to bring mesmerizing visuals to an audience who may never see such wonders in person. The BBC is widely known, and extensively award winning for all of their programming. This series brings another aspect of the world we live in directly to the home viewer. Invaluable to parents and teachers everywhere, geography becomes a live addition to the classroom and DVD library. Not to be missed, and the perfect gift for divers and sea-loving folk everywhere, these DVDs will provide hours of viewing entertainment.

BBC has long been associated with quality programming, and they continue their history of excellence with their documentary, The Great Barrier Reef. This three-part series, presented by Monty Halls, is visually stunning, as well as highly informative and intellectually stimulating. In the series, Halls, a marine biologist and ex-marine, explores the 2,000 kilometer (1,243 mile) reef in incredible detail, revealing a new and exciting world to viewers. The first film, entitled Nature's Miracle, focuses on the Great Barrier Reef, itself, as well as the wildlife that lives on it. Built by microscopic animals and plants, working in harmony with each other, the reef continues to be a vibrant and active place, with its living creatures sometimes competing with each other, sometimes cooperating with each other, to keep this natural treasure alive and thriving. The second film, Reef to Rainforest, focuses on the amazing habitats within the Great Barrier Reef, outside of the 7% of it that is coral reef. Beyond the coral reef lies an incredible variety of interconnected habitats, including the world's oldest jungle, deep water gardens, mangrove swamps, and more. As expected, the wildlife contained within these habitats is, well, wild - a Queensland grouper the size of a car, sea cows, giant hammerhead sharks, and hundreds more! Each of these habitats is connected to all of the others, and the survival of the reef depends on each of the individual habitats continuing to thrive independently, but still work together. The final film, Reef and Beyond, explores the relationship between the Great Barrier Reef and the rest of the planet, and looks to the reef's future. The reef is linked to the rest of the planet in countless ways. In addition to being home to many unique species of wildlife, the reef also receives visits from different animal species from all over the world, some of whom travel thousands of miles to get there. The reef is affected by Pacific weather systems, including destructive cyclones, so as global climate change takes place and weather patterns change, this could have serious effects on the survival of the reef. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable, informative documentary. The attention to detail is fantastic, and the camerawork is simply breathtaking. Highly recommended by this panelist!
