The timeless tale of Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, has been enjoyed by millions since he wrote the novel over 150 years ago. Since then, the story was made into a thrilling musical for the stage. Just recently, that was turned into a critically acclaimed film. How did this story remain so popular through all of its incarnations? How was it adapted from the stage to the screen? These questions and more are answered in Les Miserables: From Stage to Screen, by Benedict Nightingale and Martyn Palmer. The book completely immerses you in the journey this production has taken. It is filled with detailed accounts, breathtaking photos, and even letters, posters, programs, and pages from the actual script! Anyone who loves Les Mis must have this book!

Of all of the musicals to grace the stage in the 20th century, few have reached the legendary status of Les Miserables. As a teenager, I, myself, was absolutely addicted to the show - I saw it on Broadway, I read the Victor Hugo novel on which it was based, I memorized each song, word for word. And I was not alone - thousands, if not millions, of people, all over the world, were doing the same exact thing! And just last year, the world fell in love with Les Miserables all over again, when it was immortalized on the silver screen. Now, Les Mis lovers can rejoice, as there is a gorgeous new book, Les Miserables From Stage to Screen, which chronicles the journey of the musical from Victor Hugo's novel to the French concept album, to the British and American productions, the 2006 Broadway revival, and the 2012 movie! Published by Applause and written by Benedict Nightingale and Martyn Palmer, this book is a masterpiece in itself. Filled with a plethora of information about the history of the musical, it also contains 20 items of memorabilia, including original stage and costume designs, an invitation for the opening night part in 1985, the poster for the 25th anniversary production at the Barbican, and much more. Full of interesting stories and fantastic photographs, this book is as informative as it is entertaining. A delight from start to finish, Les Miserables From Stage to Screen is an absolute must-have for any lover of this iconic musical!

Les Miserables: From Stage to Screen, proved to be an extremely thought-provoking book. The author, Benedict Nightingale is the author of several other books about the theatre and has served as a leading theatre critic for publications such as the New York Times and the London Times. This book takes us through the history of Les Miserables from the time that Victor Hugo wrote the novel Les Miserables to Jean Valjean creating the musical and now to one of the must-see films of 2013. This book has amazing pictures and also includes remarkable relics such as, original stage and costume design, scene drawings and set designs for the film, program extracts, prop lists, and much more. These artifacts are spread through out the book in little envelopes, these really kept my attention. I love the fact that this book is not just text but has interactive items inside that really paint a picture in my mind of the evolution of les miserable. I recommend this book to any les miserable fans, or even any fans of the evolution of a story from stage to screen.

Les Miserables is perhaps one of the greatest stories and musicals of our time, and now you have the opportunity to journey through the evolution from novel, to stage to screen. In this great new coffee table book " Les Miserables, From Stage to Screen", the story comes alive. Learn the secrets, failures and success of creating this theatrical masterpiece and its rise as an international success. Every aspect of the creation is detailed in this enchanting book about dreams from novel to the silver screen. Beautiful photos and never heard stories will delight readers of all ages. Very cleverly executed this book is, including twenty removal facsimiles including costume sketches, scripts, programs, ticket stubs and more. Everyone will enjoy this fabulous and unique tribute to this musical. Get your copy today and prepare celebrate.

From London to Broadway and beyond, Les Mis has a fan base as big as the Beatles. This compilation is a feast for anyone behind the scenes and includes backstories and "souvenirs". In an ingenious nod to fandom, there are pockets of precious inserts through out the book. Hugo history, and the scope of how Les Mis came to be is interspersed with reproductions of tickets, costume sketches, prop table lists. From both the London premier and the New York triumphant debut, tidbits from the productions are golden. It's a 35 year history of a timeless tale, albeit set in post Revolutionary France. From the novel published in 1862 to the first shoot for the film in 2011, it's in here. Mentions, tracking, and documentation that will fill any "Mizerable " heart. Happily, the contemporary film version (with Hugh Jackman!) uses the music as the theatre production does: it tells the story through the music. And the sad tale unfolds before us, in each chapter of this beautiful publication. Colm Wilkinson created the role for London, and brought it to the States, as Valjean became a known entity. If you've seen any version of the films throughout the decades (since the first silent one), you know the backstory: a hunted criminal raising a waif, troubled by his past. the side bits give us romance, passion, and pain throughout, and this is one musical that will leave every audience member in tears. Maybe that's why fans flock to their 900th attendance. Les Mizerables will lap up the information herein, and store it for posterity, along with their own experience with the music, and the story. Once you've experienced the music, the production and the emotion, as it all unfolds before you in this superlative book , you'll be "Mizerable", too.

Les Miserables has always been one of my favorite musicals. I was thrilled when I saw "Les Miserable from Stage to Screen" by Benedict Nightingale and Martyn Palmer. This is a visually stunning masterpiece only to be outdone by the immensely informative content! This powerhouse book takes the reader through the entire span of Les Miserables, from background information on Victor Hugo and France at the time he lived to the formation of the well-loved theater productions of the musical to its newest form, the movie starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. As if this wasn't enough, included in the book are twenty removable items (an opening night invitation, costume sketches, original music scores and more!)! These items add so much to this already fabulous book! A lot of material is covered in this 96 page book...there are even whole chapters devoted to significant characters. This book would make a wonderful addition to anyone's book collection, but especially to the book collection of a Les Miserables fan!

One hundred fifty years after Victor Hugo wrote the novel Les Misérables, the poignant saga of Jean Valjean has become one of the world’s most popular musicals and is one of the must-see films of 2013.

Les Misérables: From Stage to Screen (Applause Books) by Benedict Nightingale and Martyn Palmer follows the genesis of the musical from conception, through trials and tribulations, to the thrilling musical extravaganza that has been seen by more than 60 million theatre-goers, and finally to the newest incarnation on screen starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. To flesh out the story, the book includes twenty removable facsimiles that highlight key moments in the creation of both the stage musical and the film, including original costume sketches, annotated scripts, original music scores and librettos, screenplay extracts, and anniversary mementos.

The book gives the background on Victor Hugo and the France he lived in. We are guided through the story of how Cameron Mackintosh was given the French concept album of Les Mis in 1982 and how he became the musical’s first producer. We see how it was sharpened and clarified for English-speaking audiences in London and New York, and eventually adapted across the globe and for schools. The book even devotes whole chapters to significant characters like Valjean, Javert, Thénardier, Fantine, and others. Bringing the book up to date, it includes Mackintosh’s new orchestration and staging for the 2006 Broadway revival and The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper’s challenge of turning the world’s longest running stage musical into a daringly different cinematic experience.

Les Misérables: From Stage to Screen is the complete 35-year rollercoaster journey of Boublil and Schonberg’s musical masterpiece, a fairy tale in its own right with a happy ending.
