If you think this is just another post about a pizza we liked, think again.  We keep sifting through the masses to find people as smart, hard-working and committed to quality as Emmett Burke is; he happens to be a Fordham grad, and we seem to be on a bit of a Fordham roll between Emmett, Lou and Gerard, and that wasn't on purpose but we think education matters so we noticed.   (Up with the Jesuits and GO BC.)
Meet Emmett's namesake casual spot downtown that just celebrated its one-year anniversary since it opened on November 12, 2013: it has brought proper Chicago pizza to Manhattan, and as far as we can tell, it's the only place here that has.  If you like your culinary endeavors to taste like a Jonathan Toews hat trick, you go to Emmett's.  (and if you don't know Jonathan, you are hockey-deficient and need a proper infusion of NHL Peachy.)
If you have read us before you know the drill is green salad, appetizer and entree for a first meeting which this was, and so far, so fabulous.  (not good)  There are four salad choices at Emmett's and we chose the one we thought sounded most interesting: the Greek Salad.  It does come lightly dressed and they are telling the truth-normally we do not want salad dressing on the salad because we like to put it on ourselves if at all, but this one really is not overdone on the dressing.  Iceburg, tomato, cucumber, red onion, kalamata olives, feta cheese and pepperoncini skate like a victorious Stanley-Cup winning team on this plate in all their freshness and Red Wine Vinaigrette glory.
The salad is that high.  It could be your meal alone.  Some people serve portions that seem like they are telling us we should go on a diet.  The portions at Emmett's are generous and you will not go hungry.  We loved the salad.
A good friend of Peachy's and Peachy scouted out the best burger places in Manhattan for many years even before Whom You Know existed, and now we've got another to add to our list, now formalized.  There is a knockout seasoning on top of this burger-celery salt, which is popular in Chicago we understand.  We wanted our burger grilled medium with mozzarella and it arrived exactly the way we wanted it.
No one will be saying where is the beef, or where is the cheese for that matter.
The cheeseburger is a camera hog and wants you to know it's not all about the pizza:
Note to the wise-there are only 29 seats at Emmett's so make sure one is yours.
Onto the pizza, which bien sur is the piece de resistance in this homage to antiques as well.
We are not New Yorkers and we appreciate all kinds of great pizza.  But if you are a New Yorker and think only New York pizza is great, clearly you have not made it to 50 MacDougal.  Think about it this way: New York pizza is kind of like the kiddie pool: it's shallow, but if you were the one that wanted to jump off the biggest diving board in the deepest pool, you ought to consider this concept for pizza because Deep Dish means Chicago.
This is definitely the best deep dish pizza you can get for miles around New York.
There is no way you will fit in your cocktail dresses if you eat as many slices of this kind of pizza as you would thin crust.  Eating one piece is a meal.  There are nine topping choices and we chose pepperoni and mushrooms and since Peachy is a garlic monster, they even found some garlic for her and added it especially, thank you.
Deep dish pizza is baked at a lower temperature for 20-25 minutes; you know anything excellent takes time.  It is baked in a pan that can seem like a pot and the ingredients are stacked from bottom to top: cheese, then toppings, then sauce which is a totally different experience and as equally delicious as your favorite local New York pizza place.  You really need to eat this with a fork and knife-it is serious pie but a different kind of pie compared to the ones you find at Pie Sisters, which we also love.  We can't wait to eat this superb pizza again!
His website and Twitter are coming but you can find Emmett on Facebook for now, and you better believe this is Terrific Takeout!
Joel (why don't you Tweet?) and Kevin, if you want Chicago pizza on your next road trip come here with Peachy!
