Last Month's Mystery Landmark

Alwyn Court at 182 West 58th Street boasts a fantastic French Renaissance exterior covered in terra-cotta ornament including the crowned salamander, a symbol of Francis the First, King of France. The building was designed by Harde & Short in 1907-09 and was designated a City Landmark in 1966. Restoration occurred in 2002 by Walter B. Melvin architects and in 1980 by Beyer Blinder Belle.

The building was correctly identified by Mark Venaglia, who is a visual artist working on murals, public art, tours, and collectibles.
