The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®Technology & Standards Forum, CEA announced the creation of its new Health and Fitness Technology Subcommittee. The new group will develop standards, recommended practices and technical reports addressing health and fitness technology.

“CEA is constantly evaluating the evolving technology landscape to see where collaborative efforts on industry standards might have a strong impact,” said Dave Wilson, vice president, Technology & Standards, CEA. “Consumers want to understand how the information they receive from their health and fitness products can benefit their wellness, and that’s why we’re developing industry standards that will help people feel confident that the information they’re receiving is reliable.”

Dr. Matthew Diamond, medical director, Misfit Wearables; and Nitesh Jain, sr. manager, Strategy and Operations, Samsung Electronics, chair the new subcommittee, which held its first meeting today. Initial projects for the group will address wearable sleep monitors, which have been the subject of collaborative work between CEA and the National Sleep Foundation for the past year.

“Technology is rapidly advancing to the point where consumers have access to increasingly sophisticated devices that can help them lead healthier lives,” said Diamond. “As these products proliferate, our goals are twofold: first, to standardize the measurements and other functions performed by a wide variety of different health and fitness devices; and second, to help consumers understand what their devices do and the meaning of the information they provide.”

“There is nothing more important than health,” said Jain. “And technology is now opening up vast opportunities for new products that will help us better monitor and improve. Our efforts to ensure consistent, meaningful results from these products will be very important.”

The formation of the Subcommittee comes at a time of strong growth for the health and fitness technology industry. According to CEA’s U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts report, health and fitness devices will lead unit sales among all wearables in 2015 with a projected 20 million units sold to dealers (a 19 percent increase from 2014), surpassing a projected $1.8 billion in revenue (a 21 percent increase over last year).

CEA’s standards committees produce standards, guidelines and technical reports that help grow the consumer technology industry. All are welcome and encouraged to join any of CEA’s technology activities. For further information please visit standards.CE.org or contact standards@CE.org.
