Naturally, we hold pizza in high esteem here at Whom You Know and feature our favorite Manhattan pizza parlors on a regular basis (stay tuned we have updates coming on some casual places!).  Admittedly, in English and Language Arts children do not naturally love poetry as a general rule, but Annick Press and Loris Lesynski show how much fun poetry can be when you pair it with something good to eat.  Recommended for ages 5-8, Nothing Beats a Pizza shows children how to be creative and inventive with words.  We'd suggest it for ages younger than 5 too.

The publishing is also fun as the lines are not straight when pizza's slippy or pizza's slidey- ups and downs are literally employed in the font.  We are all in favor of making words fun and they also include some totally new words to us in "No Smirchling Allowed."

Did you ever consider Goldilocks could be told with pizza?  Have you eaten witch's pizza?  What are you waiting for then?  Crack open this book.

Nothing Beats a Pizza is Recommended by Whom You Know! And do read it with your favorite slice.

Thirty-two catchy and fun poems for children from the author of Dirty Dog Boogie. These are poems for reading aloud, all about language, rhythm and rhyme - and an invitation to kids to use their own creativity.

Nothing beats a pizza
when you're in a pizza mood
because a pizza isn't anything
like any other food.

The opening refrain of Nothing Beats A Pizza is catchy and fun, just like all 32 poems found in Loris Lesynski's new book of poety. Loris's poems are about enjoying language, rhythm, and rhyme - and, most of all, your own creativity.

These poems are meant to be said aloud and shared. They are jumping-off points that invite kids to exercise their creativity with their own versions of the poems:
Leaves were here
they left their prints
in greenish grayish brownish tints
like rubber stamps along the road
an autumn message left in code

On the page below Leaves, Loris starts kids off with: "Pizzas were here. They left their crumbs ..." This is one of many invitations for kids to experiment and see what new creations they can build.

Dancing across the pages are illustrations and poems alive with humor, exploring things that are important to a kid's world: pizza, substitute teachers, homework, moods, food, and pets.

Annick publications are dynamic and written to the highest literary standards. We encourage critical thinking and the development of a child’s inner resources so that, in addition to becoming confident, contributing members of their community, they are also engaged with society at large and their peers around the globe. Most of all, we are passionate about ensuring that our books be pleasurable, self-affirming, informative, and entertaining.

Annick publishes books for toddlers through to young adults. We’re widely recognized for picture books by such popular authors as Robert Munsch, whose book The Paperbag Princess has sold millions of copies around the world and continues to be a bestseller in 15 languages. In recent years, Annick has become known for our award-winning middle grade non-fiction. Annick titles put an intriguing spin on topics from ancient history (Adventures on the Ancient Silk Road, Royal Murder) to modern science (The Great Motion Mission), and from animal behavior (Animal Snoops) to the compelling stories of people from around the world (Fatty Legs).

Annick’s non-fiction offerings include a number of successful series:

• The 50 Questions series takes a humorous look at scientific and historical topics such as fire (50 Burning Questions), poison (50 Poisonous Questions), underwear (50 Underwear Questions), and the environment (50 Climate Questions).

•The Jobs in History series invites kids to picture themselves in ancient civilizations from around the world, from Egyptian times (Pharaohs and Foot Soldiers) to ancient China (Warriors and Wailers).

•The We Thought of It series celebrates a variety of cultures, showcasing their amazing inventions and innovations, many of which are still in use today—such as sunscreen (A Native American Thought of It) and coffee (Latin Americans Thought of It).

Annick has a deep commitment to books for young adults, and we are proud to have published award-winning titles that speak to the issues young people deal with every day: drugs (In Ecstasy), bullying, relationships and sexuality (Leslie’s Journal; Dear Diary, I’m Pregnant), advertising and mass media (Made You Look), and depression (My Kind of Sad). Annick’s young adult fiction ranges from historical adventures (A Sword in Her Hand, The Hangman in the Mirror) and fantasy (Dennis Foon’s Longlight Legacy) to contemporary novels dealing with topics such as gambling (Double or Nothing), Stockholm syndrome (Held), and HIV (Chanda’s Secrets). Annick stories are frequently set outside of North America to offer readers a wider perspective on their world (Thunder Over Kandahar; Cry of the Giraffe).

Annick books have won prestigious awards and honors around the world, including the Michael L. Printz Honor Award for Allan Stratton’s Chanda’s Secrets, which was also adapted for the movie Life, Above All.
