Lilac Girls is a promising start for the inaugural novelic debut of Kelly, a fellow native New Englander drawn to Manhattan by subject matter whom we do not know personally or via email-but now we know her characters.   (Charles Kipps is still our dream author.)  Lilac Girls is a well-written tale that brings the reader back to the tumultuous time of World War II, a time period fabulously celebrated most recently by the absolutely brilliant Christopher Nolan (DUNKIRK!).  The greatest generation gives those coming of age today a lot to live up to and we think they could learn quite a lot from this group, and Kelly takes an interesting perspective through the lives of three girls, each of whom pen their own specific well-written chapters. We particularly love the Connecticut and Manhattan references.

In Lilac Girls, Martha Hall Kelly brings to light a part of history that may be new to you. We recommend reading the Author's Note section before reading the novel in order to gain more insight into the history, as well as a better understanding of the characters. Kelly clearly did much research, as evidenced in the rich details of this historical fiction novel.

Kelly weaves together the lives of three women from different walks of life by telling the story from each one's point of view throughout the book. Caroline and Kasia were most developed in our understanding of their motives and actions. Herta's point of view we found more challenging to read as some of her actions seemed in contradiction of each other. However, perhaps this was because, as someone who committed horrific crimes against humanity, she is a person who would be difficult to understand in general.
lt is a story that needs to be shared so that the atrocities of what took place in Poland can be further acknowledged and understood.

You'll be sad when you finish Lilac Girls- an occasion that happens when one is engrossed in the characters of the book.  Three women's lives during the Holocaust dictates interesting; and also it is the story of non-Jewish Polish women who were put in a concentration camp and were operated on for medical experiments. Having read many of the memoirs of Jewish Survivors, it seems that this war brought on insurmountable widespread suffering, and world leaders today should do all possible to avoid another with peace through strength. All in all, Lilac Girls is a great read and one we thoroughly enjoyed!!!

New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939—and then sets its sights on France.

An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences.

For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power.

The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents—from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland—as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.

In Lilac Girls, Martha Hall Kelly has crafted a remarkable novel of unsung women and their quest for love, freedom, and second chances. It is a story that will keep readers bonded with the characters, searching for the truth, until the final pages.
