@overstockart overstockArt.com Reveals the Top 10 Favorite Paintings by City Do cities match their favorite works of art? The answer is “yes”...but in curiously different ways.

What might a city’s favorite artwork tell you about the city’s culture and the people who live there? overstockArt.com, the top online distributor of hand painted fine art reproductions, wanted to find out.

The wall art retailer put its wealth of data to work to create a list of the top paintings for each of 10 major U.S. cities. overstockArt.com did a similar study for the Wall Street Journal in 2015, titled: What Art Reproductions Sell Best in Which Cities.

The data is based on purchase history from the past 12 months as well as current analysis of each city’s audience using Machine Learning algorithms. Data points considered include pages viewed, time on each page, actions taken on the site and more.

The Top 10 Favorite Paintings by City Are:

New York City: “Water Lilies” by Claude Monet

In a metropolis surrounded by water, this seems an appropriate choice. The serene shades and peaceful feel also provide respite in the city that never sleeps.

Los Angeles: “Discarded Roses” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Home to celebrities, beauty, fleeting fame and broken dreams, this evocative and wistful painting is particularly apropos.

Chicago: “Pathway in Monet's Garden at Giverny” by Claude Monet

It’s no surprise that the “City in a Garden” has an affinity for this garden scene by Monet, with its electric colors and rich tapestry of textures.

Miami: “Moon” by Justyna Kopania

It’s interesting that art buyers from a bustling beach city would prefer a remote Polish landscape...but perhaps it was the moon (over Miami)!

Philadelphia: “The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt

This choice may be inspired by the presence of another famed Klimt painting, “Portrait of a Woman,” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. On loan from the Lewis Collection, the painting moved on to another museum in 2016.

Dallas/Fort Worth: “Grande Vase Di Fiori” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Everything is bigger in Texas, including the “Grande” floral arrangement and showy blooms depicted in this Renoir favorite.

Houston: “Poppy Field in Argenteuil” by Claude Monet

Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts is home to three works by Monet, making this Impressionist master a local favorite. And though this particular painting is set in France, there may be something of Texas in the glorious blue sky.

Washington, D.C.: “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh

D.C. = Starry Night? Say no more.

Atlanta: “Apple Tree I” by Gustav Klimt

Could “The Big Peach” secretly prefer apples?

Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts is home to several Van Gogh works, and was part of the successful discovery of a previously unknown work, “Ravine,” in 2006. Could that be part of the reason Bostonians prefer this lesser-known but stand-out piece?
