Save the Children to Distribute Food Rations to 200,000 Children and Families in Haiti in Partnership with World Food Program

Save the Children will partner with the World Food Program (WFP) to distribute critically needed food supplies to about 200,000 children and families in Haiti affected by the catastrophic earthquake over two weeks ago.

Beginning this Sunday, Save the Children will provide family food rations – enough to feed a family for two weeks – to about 33,000 families (equivalent to 200,000 people) with special attention to women.

"Two weeks after the disaster, many families are still without a stable food supply," warned Annie Foster, Save the Children's emergency team leader in Haiti. "Rapid food distribution must begin immediately to save the most vulnerable, especially children."

"Children are the first ones to suffer," said Foster. "While some local markets have reopened, there are only small supplies of food and the prices have risen dramatically."

Save the Children is one of several aid agencies who will assist in a two-week WFP distribution program in and around the city of Port-au-Prince.

U.S. Military to Provide Security During Food Distribution, World Food Program to Transport Food to Sites
The US military will provide security during the food distribution and ensure the boundaries of site areas are properly arranged prior to distribution. WFP is responsible for the secure transportation of the food to the distribution site areas.
"Haitian people keep hearing that food is coming," said Foster. "But many of them have not seen any. They are becoming increasingly impatient.
One of the measures Save the Children took to prevent possible incidents is to get the community involved in the process, so they understand how this distribution will take place."

Several Additional Partners to Help Manage Distribution Sites
Save the Children is working closely with World Vision, Catholic Relief Services and Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) to manage the multiple WFP distribution sites.
Since the earthquake, Save the Children's health teams have reached more than 85,000 people with medical treatment.  The aid agency is also distributing hygiene and household supplies such as soap, towels, cans to hold water, and plastic sheeting for shelter.
Save the Children has worked in Haiti since 1978 and currently has about 250 staff in the country.

Sotheby's Old Masters Week Brings $74 million

Sotheby’s 2010 Old Masters Week totaled $74,181,071 (£45,992,356, 53,148,582), nearly topping the presale series estimate of $52.5/75.5 million*.

The week was led by the spectacular results for Thursday’s sale of Important Old Master Paintings and Sculpture, which brought $61,599,250 (£37,911,897) (¤44,000,407), nearly reaching the high estimate of $63 million.  Twelve lots sold for more than $1 million, and almost 60% of the works sold brought prices above the high estimate. The sale’s top price of $7,250,500 was garnered by Sir Anthony Van Dyck’s Two Studies of a Bearded Man (est. $5/7 million). The picture was painted by the young Sir Anthony Van Dyck when he was still in Rubens’s studio and shows how fully the artist absorbed the lessons of his master, as well as how soon he had begun to assert his own style.

Leading off the week was Wednesday’s sale of Old Master Drawings, which brought $3,331,750 (£2,063,642) (€2,379,583) (est. $2.6/3.6 million).  The top price was achieved by Canaletto’s Study of a Merchant Vessel, which was the subject of a three-way bidding battle and sold to a Private European Collector for $542,500 (est. $200/300,000).

Friday morning’s single-owner sale of Important European Terracotta and Bronze Sculpture from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections totaled $6,826,067 (£4,232,170) (€4,890,679), outpacing the $3.6/5.3 million presale estimate.  Spanning the 15th through the 20th centuries and encompassing both southern and northern Europe, Dr. Sackler’s collection of European bronzes and terracotta sculptures is the most extensive of its kind in private hands. Museum participation in the sale was strong, with at least two top American institutions buying in the sale, and the MusĂ©e du Louvre securing Joseph Chinard’s seductive terracotta sculpture of Phryne Emerging from her Bath, circa 1784-1787, which sold for $482,500 (est. $400/600,000).

The series concluded with a sale of Old Master and 19th Century European Art, which brought $2,424,004 (est. $2.2/3.2 million).

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Jennifer Creel, Fashion Consultant, Eyewear Designer, Actess and Model

Jennifer Creel, a native New Yorker and mother of three children, works as a Fashion Consultant, Eyewear Designer, Actress and Model. In her early career, 1986-1988, she worked for Ben Zuckers, the famous Gemologist, specializing in colored precious stones. Further, she broadened her skills while working as Interior Decorator for Pamela Banker. Inspired by her various achievements the next step in her career was a ten year employment as Designer for Polo Ralph Lauren, specializing in women’s active wear. From 2004 to 2006, Jennifer began a french soap and candle company called L'Atieler du Savon. All four of their fragrances available in candles in soaps all came from Marseilles and they sold at Bergdorf Goodman and many specialty stores throughout the USA in addition to a beautiful shop in the Mairie in Paris.  The release of her eyewear collection, Modo for Jennifer Creel in May 2009, together with Modo Eyewear was a further highlight in her distinguished career. The line features 7 Styles of eco-friendly high fashionsummer eyewear with exclusively hand-figured leather and bamboo accents. Partnering with trees for the future, a tree will be planted for every frame sold. As you know, these were Whom  You Know's sunglasses of the summer of 2009 (they are sold at Bergdorf Goodman) and Peachy Deegan really loves them: click here to see.

As she is really dedicated to charity, Jennifer is involved in various projects for The Museum of the City of New York, the publication New Yorker for Children, the Intrepid Fallen Hero’s and Head of Associates on the board of Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
Jennifer’s TV career started with a recurring role from 2005 – 2007 in “The Bold and The Beautiful” portraying Sophie Gage, a Fashion Reporter. In June 2009 she did an Ovation TV Special “Anatomy of a Closet”. On Plum TV, she was hosting Summer – Fall 2008 and 2009, “The Juice”, a special event and party guide for all Hamptons-lovers. Moreover, she did a documentary for Vogue TV 2008 and advised viewers where to get the best Christmas gifts in New York in a Christmas Shopping special.

As her talents show such a wide variety, her interests do so as well. Sport is very important to her. Horse-riding, skiing and running are only some of the sports she enjoys doing, and she ran the NY marathon on November 1st, where she joined Fred’s Team for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Spending summers in Europe or Long Island was always inspirational to her and she really enjoys traveling. Having time to spend with children and make them laugh is always important to her as well. Moreover, Jennifer’s enthusiasm for writing made her write a book which will be released soon, and we will of course tell you about.

Her inspiration is clearly marked by her parents influence: “My parents are where my inspiration for fashion, travel, and the arts originated.” In addition, Valentino always gave her guidance and motivation. “I loved Valentino growing up. Valentino was able to take an elegant timeless dress to another level because of his ability to create details with unbelievable craftsmanship which had given him a style that was always very recognizable.”  We are so pleased to present her as our latest Mover and Shaker!!!

Peachy Deegan interviewed Jennifer Creel for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What is your first fashion memory?
Jennifer Creel: Going into my mothers closets and trying on all her beautiful dresses as well as watching her as a child getting ready to go out for lunches, dinner etc. She has impecable timeless classic style and taste.

What did you like most about working for Ralph Lauren?
Ralph Lauren gave me the design background I needed in fashion and in working for Ralph Lauren I learned how to create and express my own personal style.

Are your children into fashion?
All my children express themselves with their own sense of personal style. I let them chose pieces of clothing when we shop with limitations.   My daughter definitely loves it the most and I enjoy watching her put clothing together; I always ask her advice about outfits I choose since she has a great sense of style, maybe better than mine.

Tell us more about the charity work you are involved with please.
I was raised to give back; my mother was always doing work for charitable causes. So, it was instilled in me at a very early age;  I also try to do this with my children.

What was your inspiration for Modo for Jennifer Creel?
I decided to approach Modo eyewear after I was finishing a TV show and I knew the season was over and I needed a new job to work on. I obviously love fashion and I love sunglasses. I have been known for my sunglasses and I just thought its worked for me. I met Alessandro Lanaro the CEO of modo eyewear, 6 months before ironically at a private dinner. So, I went to him asking his opinion on a eco's line of sunglasses and how we could make this sunglass line as well as a giving back component.  So, he loved my idea and we started right away, Its was all the right timing.

What television experiences have meant the most to you and why?
The TV work I have done has been amazing; I love being an actress and playing different characters as well as doing documentary and talk show hosts. Its a great learning curve as well as learning patience and constant changes and rejections.

How has Valentino influenced you?
Valentino is a huge influence on me;  I always dreamt about meeting him and wearing his clothing as a child. My dream came true and more; he is a lovely talented man who is so into details and craftmanship. He made me realize the beauty and time that he put into each of his dresses.
He showed me what it was to be a true genius in the Fashion World with his amazing gift for details and being so creative and passionate about every dress that walks down the runway every season. Valentino made me realize the beauty of everything that we are exposed to in our lives and how we can express it through many different kinds of mediums.

Whom You Know's Fabulous Beauty Panel of Experts Recommends Dr. Hauschka's Lavender Bath!

Soothing and relaxing for all skin conditions, Lavender Bath by Dr. Hauschka is just perfect for the weather we are experiencing in Manhattan right now!  It makes us want to head right for a nice hot bath.  The lavender essential oil imparts soothing warmth to the skin, relaxing the body, easing the mind, calming skin sensitivities and visibly reducing redness. Perfect for the bath, a footbath, or in a rinse basin with cleansing water.  Here is what the fabulous beauty panel thought:

Dr. Hauschka’s “Lavender Bath” stimulates your skin and leaves a cooling freshness.  Castor oil, glycerin, lavender oil, and other oils helps to compose this silky smooth product.  It does not leave your skin with an oily feeling as some other products do, just pure smoothness is felt on your skin.  While pouring just a very small amount of this lavender bath into your bath water the room is filled with a soothing, refreshing aroma.  Then if you are fortunate to experience this in a whirlpool bath, the results are ULTIMATELY EXHILARATING!   Thank you Dr. Hauschka for creating such a fine product!

Dr Hauschka uses no synthetic fragrances, preservatives, colors or anything else of an undesirable nature in their oils. I simply ran a hot bath and then added a few drops of the lavender oil into the water. The smell of lavender immediately filled my whole bathroom. It was very relaxing, that night I slept like a baby.  Lavender oil has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties so it is really good for sensitive or inflamed skin.  This oil is concentrated so the bottle will last for many months; you only need a few drops at a time.

As a person who only takes baths (and not showers), I was thrilled to try a new holistic approach. A normal bath seems glorious to me, but by adding a couple of teaspoons of Dr. Hauschka Lavender Bath, I was happily amazed. My senses awakened especially with the strong scent of lavender that soothed and relaxed me. In the directions they tell you for an intensified effect to add a couple of drops to a hot compress and put it on your neck. What a difference it made. My neck muscles loosened up and my shoulders relaxed. A even more perfect way to unwind after a long day at work!  I will always keep the little vial of Dr. Hauschka Lavender Bath on hand!

Some additional key points:
  • Pure lavender essential oil eases tension and calms after a busy day
  • Sulfated castor oil enables bath to easily disperse in water
  • Calms redness and skin sensitivity
  • An integral part of the Dr.Hauschka "Press & Roll" Cleansing Protocol
  • The lavender scent promotes a peaceful night's sleep for adults and children alike

The Directors of Bonhams are pleased to announce the appointment of Rik Pike, as Wine & Spirits and Public Relations Director to Bonhams New York. Pike joins the company on 1 February 2010.  Whom You Know congratulates Rik!

In 1997, after completing an M.A. degree in Art History from St. Andrews University in Scotland, Rik Pike joined Christie’s in London and studied the Advanced Certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) while a Junior Wine Specialist. He then traveled to Australia where he helped to produce the 2000 vintage at Charles Melton Wines in the Barossa Valley.

In 2001, Pike re-joined Christie’s where he worked for seven years in the Public Relations department in both London and more recently in the New York office, rising to Assistant Vice President, Senior Public Relations Manager. In America he managed eight departments and ran high profile auction campaigns including Marlon Brando, Star Trek, Steve McQueen’s Ferrari, Turner’s Giudecca and Christie’s LIVE™, the new online bidding feature.

Throughout this time, Pike was closely involved with the Wine Department, rising to International Public Relations Manager for the Department. He worked on many prestigious wine sales including offerings from Chateau Latour in Europe, the first Evening Sales in the USA, the re-launch of wine auctions in Asia and the first New York Spirits auction since Prohibition.  In September 2008, following his first passion, Pike became an Associate Wine Specialist at Christie’s New York, and was awarded his WSET Diploma by the end of the year. During his time with the Department, Pike curated a Spirits auction offering in November 2009 and oversaw the sale of wines from the cellars of Manhattan cultural and culinary landmark‘21’ Club.

Malcolm Barber, CEO, Bonhams &Butterfields, said, “Rik has developed a unique skill set after ten years in the auction house world, a thorough understanding of public relations as well as a wine specialisation, both of which will be a great asset to Bonhams.  We are happy to welcome such a qualified addition to our New York office.”

As good as the fashion is, the photography is just as good if not better throughout the work.  Unlike many other coffee-table-type books on fashion, this has an interesting history and commentary accompanying the outstanding photography.  Halston, Geoffrey Beene, and many others are shown and fashion is explored beyond the surface from dressmaking to tailoring and beyond.  Part of the history of American is the history of fashion; this is a needed piece of culture!  Towards the end, you will even see a couple of designs for men...

Whom You Know recommends American Beauty by Patricia Mears!

This December, Yale University Press, in association with The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, published American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion by Patricia Mears.

This beautifully illustrated book is the first to examine the relationship between innovation and aesthetics as expressed by American couturiers and fashion designers from the late 1910s to the present day. The book, which accompanies a major exhibition opening in November at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, reveals that great design and great style were consistent elements in the work of American’s best fashion designers.

Patricia Mears introduces many great forgotten figures, as well as many familiar names: work by lesser-known figures such as Jessie Franklin Turner, Ronaldus Shamask, and Charles Kleibecker is discussed alongside pieces by more celebrated creators, such as Halston and Charles James; work by designers of the past is juxtaposed with that of present-day designers such as Rick Owens, Yeolee Teng, and Maria Comejo. James’s grand and structurally imposing gowns from the 1950s appear alongside contemporary Infantas by Ralph Rucci; the section on draping juxtaposes 1930s gowns by Elizabeth Hawes and Valentina with more contemporary garments by Jean Yu and Isabel Toledo; clothing cut into pure geometric shapes like circles, triangles, and rectangles is illustrated by World War I–era teagowns by Jessie Franklin Turner, Claire McCardell’s mid-century rompers garments, and modern sportswear by Yeohlee and Shamask.

While the United States may be best known worldwide for its casual mass-marketed garments, Mears demonstrates that artistry, innovation, and flawless construction are the true marks of American fashion.

Archive of Marxist art historian security cleared by Anthony Blunt in war for sale at Bonhams

MARXIST ART HISTORIAN’S ARCHIVES FOR SALE AT BONHAMS
SECURITY CLEARED BY SOVIET AGENT ANTHONY BLUNT IN WWII

The private papers of leading Marxist art historian, Francis Klingender, are to be sold at Bonhams Printed Books and Maps sale in Oxford on 23 February.

An avowed Communist, Klingender was kept under security surveillance from the early 1930s onwards. During the Second World War he was excused military service because of ill-health and instead joined the Ministry of Home Security as a statistician.   Ironically, his  security file was reviewed by fellow communist - and Soviet spy - Anthony Blunt, then working as an M15 officer, who concluded that Klingender’s beliefs were essentially intellectual and that he was “quite confident that he would not do anything disloyal to this country”.

Despite subsequent contact with both Blunt and Guy Burgess, a fellow member of the Cambridge spy ring who defected to the Soviet Union in 1951, there is no suggestion that Klingender himself was ever involved in espionage.

The Klingender’s archive provides a fascinating insight into his personal and academic life and those of the times in which he lived. The material features family papers from his childhood in Germany and a collection of over 70 political cartoons by, among others, Gilray and Hogarth, which formed the basis of his book, ‘Hogarth and the English caricature’ published in 1944. In 1948 he donated an important collection of caricatures to the British Museum.

Bonhams Head of Books, Maps and Manuscripts David Park said, “Klingender was a significant figure in art history at a time when intellectual and cultural debate had a much greater influence on wider political thinking than it does now. He was deeply interested in the role of political cartoons in fighting tyranny and the caricatures in the Bonhams auction bears out this fascination.”

The archive, which is being sold in separate lots, has an estimated value of around £40,000.

READ THIS: What If? & Why Not? by Jen Groover

If anyone ever needed inspiration to start his or her own business, this book is the ideal place to find it.  Beyond being a virtual mentor and cheerleader in black and white print form, Jen Groover has planned a ten chapter dream sequence for each and every dreamer who is a person of action.  Inventor of the Butler Bag (by the way, Jen have you seen the Handbag Butler in our Gotham Gadgets column?), Groover successfully communicates how to get beyond any and all apprehensions any budding entreprenueur may have to spur them along to the birth of a new venture. We celebrate our 100th posting in Read This with What If? & Why Not? by Jen Groover, and we highly recommend it.

We love this book because it starts with a question and is thought-provoking.  What If & Why Not?  We love love love to ask questions at Whom You Know.  Peachy Deegan is always asking everyone she meets a million questions…when you question the world around you, you become an innovator, perhaps seeing a better way something can be done.

We love this book because it is upbeat and positive.  Groover has lines like “Someday is today.”  Groover tells the reader facts like many successful people have failed, they just didn’t let that stop that from winning in the end.  Even the Beatles were turned down several times at the start.

We love this book because it applauds original thinking, the real currency in business.  If you are an original thinker with a great product, we want to hear from you.

We love this book most of all because it is so much like Whom You Know.  See page 121 where Groover lists bullet points on how to become an information junkie:

1.      Go to technology events.  (We would say read Gotham Gadgets...we do the work for you at Whom You Know weeding out the ones you don’t want to know about.) We hope we are a technology event.
2.      Get to know the world of branding and marketing.  We cover and work with a lot of brand names, large and small.
3.      Read trade publications.  We try to make every column we have (around 80, we haven’t stopped to count) about excellence in each trade we have something to say about, and the original information is coming from the source and everything has our twist on it.
4.      Interview Movers and Shakers.  Of course this is our most favorite point.  Jen Groover herself is one of our Movers and Shakers!  Read the interview clicking here.  Now we have over 170 but Jen was in the first 50.  We think they can all learn something from each other.

Groover is indeed forward-thinking, and she even says something along the lines of what we say to every person who has a post written on them or their product: display your great press!  (see page 146)*

She even mentions some brands we have covered, like Nike: http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/10/olympic-hopefuls-join-nike-to-unveil.html

Another of our Movers and Shakers, Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx is mentioned a few times.  We met Sara at a Saks event here in Manhattan and we think all of these mentions of entrepreneurial success through hard work by Groover add color to the idea that you too can be an entrepreneur, with a little sweat equity.

This book is interspersed with worthwhile quotes such as this one from Pablo Picasso: “I am always doing things I can’t do.  That’s how I get to do them.”  It also has quotes that go to show you that not all Presidents are innovators: President Woodrow Wilson said, “It is ridiculous to think the motor car will someday replace the horse and buggy.”  Fortunately he was wrong!  (For more on what we think of cars, see Cruising Peachy.)  Our favorite quote Groover uses is by John Steinbeck: “Ideas are like rabbits.  You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you’ll have a dozen.”

There is a quote of Robert Kennedy's that this book reminds us of.  Although not included in the book, we quote him:
"There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were and ask why not."  Did you know his granddaughter Kick is another Mover and Shaker here.  (Click to see her interview.)

In this economy, the USA needs entrepreneurship more than ever.  Groover’s ideas are timeless, but so appropriate for the current climate.  This is the perfect gift for anyone that is forward thinking and wants to look forward to Monday as much as Jen Groover does!

Many people never start their own business because they lack confidence and are confused about how to actually go about doing it.

In the fantastic new book What If? & Why Not?, business expert and creator of the Butler Bag Jen Groover (who has appeared on CBS’ “The Early Show,” “Fox & Friends” and many other television and radio shows) gives both motivational support and concrete ideas for her readers to have both the emotional and business tools to become successful entrepreneurs themselves.

There is simply no other book out there like this! There are many motivational books and many books about business, but no one blends the two like serial entrepreneur and Huffington Post columnist Jen Groover does.
Everyone is talking about this book!
“Jen has something special about her; her passion and creativity are infectious. She has the soul of an entrepreneur, and it radiates off her—and she proves it every day. Jen’s book is the perfect extension to teach others how to create their own success.”
—Donny Deutsch

Originally, Jen Groover achieved her success through her invention of the Butler Bag www.butlerbag.com and went onto create Launcher’s CafĂ© www.launcherscafe.com, a Web site to help entrepreneurs get started. She has been featured in many magazines and newspapers including People, Us, O, Redbook and  Entrepreneur.

Now, Jen Groover has been compared to Martha Stewart because she is an entrepreneur extraordinaire. She built a multimillion-dollar business from scratch and knows that if she can do it, so can many entrepreneurs.

Her book What If?& Why Not? shows how an entrepreneur can transform their fears into action by rethinking the negative questions that can lead to failure before they even get started.

No one can motivate budding entrepreneurs better that Jen. Around the country, in person and on television, Jen teaches people how to pitch themselves to success. She does the same in her book. In sections of the book she calls Dreamers’ Corner, she interviews successful new entrepreneurs. She offers motivational worksheets to keep entrepreneurs organized.

Jen Groover will soon be launching a QVC show on the Jen Groover Brand, which includes innovative products and accessories. To learn more about Jen and see her on air and the many media outlets she has been featured in, go to: www.jengroover.com.
