Champagne Wishes: Whom You Know Recommends Nicolas Feuillatte Rose Brut Champagne! Celebrate the Holidays with Friends, Family, and Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte! Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte presents gift packs of bubbly for holiday 2010 (and New Year’s day 2011)!

HAPPY NEW YEAR MANHATTAN!
Peachy Deegan is ringing in the New Year the the fabulous  Nicolas Feuillatte Rose Brut Champagne!!!
Energetic bubbles in a pinky peachy hue will meet your lips in your flute of choice, and we highly recommend this nonvintage Rose for celebrating now and every day-you don't need it to be New Year's to drink Champagne, but of course it is quite hot right now.  The finish is fresh, the color is enticing, and the quality of taste is great.  The texture is lovely and we detect notes of strawberry and raspberry that are faint - which we like- not overpowering.  But who will Peachy be kissing when the clock strikes 12?  That is not something we discuss on Whom You Know!
Picking this bottle up pronto is what you should be discussing with your partners in crime to ring in 2011.  It's a pleasure to drink in addition to being an amazing value.

The holidays are the perfect time to gather with loved ones and celebrate the joys of the year and good fortune of their company.  Whether this holiday gathering is over a home cooked meal of seasonal dishes or at a boisterous or intimate party, Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte has an exceptional range to provide the perfect compliment. See Manhattan On Your Feet: Whom You Know Highly Recommends the Gangi in Black Patent Leather by Anna Capri!!! What Could Be Better than Exclaiming Amo Le Scarpe Italiane for the New Year! They are so Resort Peachy for your Yacht...

"Amo Le Scarpi Italiane!!!!" exclaims Peachy Deegan to ring in the New Year!  If you are somewhere warm, there is nothing better than the Gangi by Anna Capri, and we like it most in black patent.  If you are on your yacht in the Mediterranean, these are perfect.  If you are freezing in Manhattan, perhaps have a beach party inside, paint your toenails and put these on and book a trip somewhere warm and get excited to wear them outside~!   Also, we totally believe in being prepared so if you get your pair now, you will be all set for the warm weather when it gets here.

These are so well-made and we cannot get over how comfortable they are-the padding on the bottom is terrific. Anna Capri signature sandals are extremely comfortable, light & flexible.  This is no ordinary pair of sandals either-they make quite the fashionable statement with the AC signature center, the ecru contrasting stitching as well as the silver grommet details, in addition to the wedge heel.

These sandals, handcrafted in Italy exude a Tuscan tradition to bring the consumer the new “MADE IN ITALY” delivering fashion, comfort & are attractively priced as well.   These sandals will retail for about $69.00, and the spring 2011 collection ranges from $65-$90, for 100% Made In Italy Sandals.  This is the most reasonable price we have ever seen for a sandal of this quality.  We are not price sensitive at Whom You Know as we sacrifice nothing for quality, but since these are premium quality, it's important to note they are an excellent deal as well.  Whom You Know highly recommends the Gangi by Anna Capri!!!   You need them for 2011.

Terrific Takeout: China Spice

We do very few Asian restaurants because most of them pursue greasiness and not quality we've found.  However, we have found one we like, it is brand new, on the upper east side, and you should know about it! China Spice, located on 1588 York Avenue makes some of the best boneless spare ribs in town and they are even healthy about it-look at the carrots and celery that comes with it. Delightfully flavorful, you won't find these bathing in grease. China Spice has only been open about a week and it is a huge improvement over what was previously in this space. So, if you were there before you should be aware China Spice has new ownership and they have totally renovated and it looks great.  It is clean now.  Clean is obviously high on our list.
For our main course, we tried the basil and lemongrass seafood, which had quite a kick in it!  Prawn, crabmeat, scallops, fish fillet and squid joined some nice vegetables including some snappy pea pods which we loved.   Of course it was served with rice on the side, and the perfect end was a fortune cookie-just what you need to ring in the New Year.
Dessert is not yet available but it will be in the coming weeks.

Their site tells us:
Our chef, Peter Wong, has over 30 years of experience operating several Asian restaurants on the East Coast. He’s known for using the freshest ingredients combined with his homemade Asian sauces that have been perfected over the years.

We use only vegetable oil and fresh seasonal vegetables to promote healthier eating. Our menu is designed to showcase our most popular dishes. If you have a favorite that is not on the menu, please let us know and we can request the chef to prepare it to your specifications. Additionally, if there are certain ingredients you are allergic to or would prefer to eliminate for other reasons please let us know when you are ordering. We are here to make each meal with us the very best!

"Pulp Fiction: The Sequel" | Opens January 11 at LTMH Gallery

An exhibition of paintings embellished with embroidery and sequins, as well as photographs, by Turkish artist Kezban Arca Betibeki will be on view at Leila Taghinia-Milani Heller (LTMH) Gallery from January 11 through February 1, 2011.  Pulp Fiction: The Sequel is the artist’s first solo show in the U.S.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Isabella Icoz.

In her new body of work, Batibeki depicts women in various states of undress or completely covered by the veil.  The exhibition title refers to the popular magazines and books published in the first half of the 20th century on cheap "pulp" paper with lurid cover art that offered escapist and sensationalist fiction for a mass audience.  Intensely mysterious, some of Batibeki’s women seem to be floating through space, while others are in grounded positions holding knives or guns.  The canvases evoke wonder on the part of the viewer:  Is it a mere catfight or is something much more dangerous about to happen?

As Icoz writes in the catalogue, “Batibeki’s paintings and photographs are in essence crime and detective stories, but just a fragment of a film.  The viewer enters the story right after something has happened. We know that a dramatic event has taken place, but we don’t know the details, we don’t know what unfolded and we become curious to learn more.  Batibeki allows the viewer to come inside, but in a somewhat secretive fashion. The viewer remains on the sidelines, peering in yet essentially hidden, but still very much engulfed in the fantasy world that becomes increasingly real.”

Kezban Arca Batibeki was born in Istanbul in 1956.  She is widely regarded as one of the most insightful artists concerned with the popular culture in Turkey’s contemporary art scene.  Her work, which includes painting, photography, installation, and short films, has been exhibited widely throughout the Middle East, Europe, and the UK.  Batibeki lives and works in Istanbul.

Leila Taghinia-Milani Heller (LTMH) Gallery is located at 39 East 78th Street at Madison Avenue, New York, NY  10075, 212.249.7695, www.ltmhgallery.com. For further information, please contact Lauren Pollock at lauren@ltmhgallery.com.

READ THIS: Mrs. Astor Regrets - The Hidden Betrayals of a Family Beyond Reproach by Meryl Gordon

Life on the inside is not so much what it appears to be on the outside, and with the good comes the bad in life at times, and Mrs. Astor had quite a bit of both.  We are sad that we never met her, but feel like she must be there in spirit at quite of the few soirees we cover.  What we liked most about her is her depth of character-she didn't just write out checks, she actually went in person to see how her money was being spent.  We love that kind of interest that goes beyond the surface of anything and clearly displays passion.  As early as page 8 our friend Peg Breen from the Landmarks Conservancy, one of our most favorite charities was quoted as saying the backing of Mrs. Astor held quite some weight....we love the Landmarks Conservency:
2010 coverage:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2010/11/17th-annual-living-landmarks.html
2009 coverage:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/11/nightlight-new-york-landmarks.html
So we guess we must say Brooke, we were born too late to have met you at their gala....and we also love how your criteria for people is that they must be accomplished, interesting and fun - we agree.  We also love how she took pleasure in the small things and love the relationships she had with her grandsons.

We say it time and time again-life revolves around Swifty's and on page 10 Robert Caravaggi appears - giving her teapots she was admiring.  Oh Brooke we wish you were here to drink The Peachy Deegan made with Star Vodka-you were born too early!!!  And our friend Chris Meigher is quoted on page 215 commenting on the public appetite for news on Mrs. Astor and how she made their online traffic jump...well Robert and Chris, you do the same for us!  It must be contagious.

On a more serious note, her overall attitude and ability to rise to the occasion are something to be admired and we don't want to highlight the darker parts of her life in this review, but they are in the book and her life is definitely not as easy as it may have appeared.  She was known to not have gone out without at least a million dollars around her neck, but Peachy thinks she'd prefer to wear faux pearls and not go through what Mrs. Astor did.

You won't be able to put this book down; it is truly one of the most fascinating reads we've encountered.  Unfortunately it's true as far as we can see...and we would like to know what happened to her clothes (p. 208).  The pictures in the middle add to the overall color.  Also, we love her poem Discipline on p. 228.  We won't print it as we want you to read the book...

Whom You Know Highly Recommends Mrs. Astor Regrets!  It is a staple of Manhattan history.

***

The fate of Brooke Astor, the endearing philanthropist with the storied name, has generated worldwide headlines since her grandson Philip sued his father, Anthony Marshall, in 2006, alleging mistreatment of Brooke. Shortly after her death in 2007, Anthony was indicted on charges of looting her estate.

New York journalist Meryl Gordon has interviewed not only the elite of Mrs. Astor's social circle but also the large staff who cared for her during her declining years. The result is the behind-the-headlines story of the Astor empire's unraveling, filled with never-before-reported scenes.  This powerful, poignant saga takes the reader inside the gilded gates of an American dynasty to tell of three generations' worth of longing and missed opportunities and is filled with secrets of the sort that have engaged Americans from the era of Edith Wharton to the more recent days of Truman Capote.  Even in this territory of privilege, no riches can put things right once they've been torn asunder. Mrs. Astor Regrets is an American epic of the bonds of money, morality, and social position.

High Shine Eyecolor by Bare Escentuals Suggested by Mover and Shaker Renee Smith Recommended by Peachy Deegan to Ring in Your New Year Right!

You know when Peachy Deegan hears the word "moonshine" she thinks of a fabulous homemade drink in Ireland made with peat...but now she is also thinking of Mover and Shaker Renee Smith's suggestion of a new eyecolor!  We love love love our Movers and Shakers and Renee is so smart to pay attention - you remember we loved the Queen Phyllis eyeshadow by Bare Escentuals and this is similar and even easier to apply-just a turn of the cap and a swipe of the wand over your eyelid-you will be left fabulous and ready for New Year's Eve!  it is shimmery and classy-not Jersey Shore.  It's as smooth as Star Vodka, but not something you want to ingest internally.  So easy, you can even apply with one glass of champagne in the other hand....

Terrific Takeout: Al Forno!

Usually in any food review, we begin with the main meal.  However, in the case of Al Forno, the Chocolate Truffle was so excellent we're going to start with dessert. And it was a fine companion to the 2007 Quattro Canti by our friend Xavier:
The freshness and flavor of this truffle, not to mention the acute attention to detail (check out the drizzle and the cherry-not everyone pays this much attention to takeout) make the dessert alone reason to go to Al Forno.  But the pizza is just as good a reason:
Ingredients are among the most authentic we have found, and you should know that Al Forno is Italian for oven.  Every pizza is served with fresh homemade mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, imported grated cheese and extra version olive oil.  We highly recommend it, and Peachy Deegan added onions, peppers, mushrooms and pepperoni to hers.  Please keep the computer screen clean, readers because we see you salivating.
We balanced out our naughtiness with a fabulous Insalata Mista which was creatively arranged!  And they do bespoke salads and they follow directions-they held the olives and added some delightful mozzarella and roasted peppers-kind of reminds us of a firework and Katy Perry's song. Although Al Forno happened to open on 9/11/01, we have to say it is the best thing that happened to Manhattan that day.
Whom You Know highly recommends Al Forno for Takeout!
It was our first time there, and it won't be our last.

On New Year's resolutions, by Helen Fielding

"I do think New Year's resolutions can't technically be expected to begin on New Year's Day, don't you?  Since, because it's an extension of New Year's Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system.  Also dieting on New Year's Day isn't a good idea as you can't eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover.  I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second."

On New Year's, by Mark Twain

"A new oath holds pretty well; but... when it is become old, and frayed out, and damaged by a dozen annual retryings of its remains, it ceases to be serviceable; any little strain will snap it."

Champagne Wishes: Xavier Flouret and Cognac One Have Another Winner in the 2007 Quattro Canti- This Gorgeous Red from Sicily Is Perfect For Your Manhattan Winter!

Released in early December in the US, Quattro Canti is a quality red from Sicily made by winemaker Stefanie Lena and her husband at Fatascia S.R.L., which they founded and Xavier is so smart to bring this to New York as it is a clear-cut winner for the winter.  Complex notes of plum and chocolate will invigorate your senses and the depth of this Quattro Canti is unsurpassed.  We think this is so new it's not even on the Cognac One website yet so keep your eyes peeled!  Rich raspberry tones light up in a clear ruby when you hold your glass up to the light.  The Nero d'Avola has a fabulous structure that will leave you more than satisfied.  Great with red meats and even pizza which is one of Peachy's addictions, the Quattro Canti is a winner with anything tomato-based as well.

Be on the cutting edge and serve this robust Italian red at your next soiree-your guests will be truly delighted and you'll say - you know about it because it's not who you know, it's Whom You Know and like the fabulous Anna Baiguera ballet flats, sometimes the best Champagne Wishes come from Italy.  And it should come as no surprise to you that Xavier's fine wines are served at Swifty's, and small world that it is, Alejandra of the Anna team also goes to Swifty's....And Robert Caravaggi is Italian.  If you just said to yourself who is Robert Caravaggi, well you must be reading Whom You Know for the first time....stay tuned for some new Robert Caravaggi news in a column that has nothing to do with cuisine, fine wine, or fabulous Peachy Deegans.  And keep in mind that after The Peachy Deegan and Star Vodka consumed straight, Xavier Flouret wines are a fabulous selection to accompany your next meal at 1007 Lexington.

READ THIS: Secrets of the Tudor Court BY ROYAL DECREE By Kate Emerson

How we love tales of the Tudors at Whom You Know!  As you know, we are dedicated to the proper use of the English language and of course we have ENGLAND to thank for that!  How we love to visit London and go to the National Portrait Gallery and in this fabulous historical novel, we see some characters featured on their hallowed walls.

This book is much more than just a fabulous dress on the cover, but it is that too.  Who designed it?  We want it, pretty please.  We love the maps, the family trees and the biographies contained before and after the text of the story.    And this publicist is totally on it!  She must know Peachy Deegan's birthday, an international holiday at Whom You Know- as the book begins with the line: "On the twenty-ninth day of January..."!

Bess, the protagonist, learns of the trials of being pretty and makes her way though the ups and downs of court-surely if there was a New York Post and a page 6 for the Tudor Court she would have made it many times.  And definitely the two fools of the court would have made an appearance...One of our favorite moments in the book was when she interacted with an age 11 Queen Elizabeth, who was then a princess.  Elizabeth told Bess: "It is best not to love anyone...The people you love always leave you."  Bess reflects: "Was it better not to love anyone for fear of losing them?  No doubt it was, but love was not something anyone could control." (p. 116).

Readers will delight in Kate Emerson’s December adventure, also the third in her Secrets of the Tudor Court series, BY ROYAL DECREE (Gallery Books; December 14th, 2010; $16.00).
Charming.  Desirable.  Forbidden.  Brought to court with other eligible young noblewomen by the decree of King Henry VIII, lovely Elizabeth “Bess” Brooke realizes for the first time that beauty can be hazardous.  Although Bess has no desire to wed the aging king, she and her family would have little choice if Henry’s eye were to fall on her.  And other dangers exist as well, for Bess has caught the interest of dashing courtier Will Parr. Bess finds Will’s kisses as sweet as honey, but marriage between them may be impossible.  Will is a divorced man, and remarriage is still prohibited.  Bess and Will must hope that the king can be persuaded to issue a royal decree allowing Will to marry again…but to achieve their goal, the lovers will need royal favor.  Amid the swirling alliances of royalty and nobles, Bess and Will perform a dangerous dance of palace intrigue and pulse-pounding passions.

Brought to glowing life by the talented Kate Emerson, and seen through the eyes of a beautiful young noblewoman, BY ROYAL DECREE illuminates the lives of beautiful young courtiers in and out of the rich and compelling drama of the Tudor court.

Following the highly regarded The Pleasure Palace and Between Two Queens, Emerson will intrigue and fascinate readers again with SECRETS OF THE TUDOR COURT: BY ROYAL DECREE, keeping them continually turning pages as they follow Bess and Will, and the hope for their future.
