The best feel-good movie of this year so far is unquestionably The Intouchables, and if you are one that is not into foreign films, this one will get you to change your mind.  Based on a real life story, The Intouchables will reach across not only language barriers but also race differences, contrasting cultures, and class with overriding human characteristics, namely humor which is at its best.  If you are not laughing so hard you're crying during parts of this movie, you need to get your internal hilarity meter checked as both Francois Cluzet as Philippe and Omar Sy as Driss are absolutely brilliant throughout.  Music also knocks down many barriers, and we love the dancing birthday party scene.  Even if you don't speak French, you will not miss a thing since there are also subtitles in English.  This movie did remind us a bit of one of our absolute favorites, Scent of a Woman. It also reminded us of Peachy's dual confirmation & concordia project at New Horizons for the late Joyce Raudat, who was a friend and quadriplegic she assisted.

From rags to riches, Driss though he does not have training as a "nurse" proves that his humanity and social sense make him the best candidate to get Philippe back to being a real person again. Surely, he is also inspired by his to-die-for bathroom that we dream of now too (it looks like it might even hold the 1,800 plus products we've reviewed as well...) and even psyches himself up to be the valet (you know that work from Downton Abbey-think Bates for Lord Grantham!) of stockings for the medically-challenged legs of Philippe.  Reverse psychology also plays a role, as Philippe doesn't believe Driss will last two weeks.  Driss wants to know where Philippe's skirt is to go with the stockings...(and Driss, if you can't beat em join em - we suggest Emilio Cavallini!)

Driss proves to have many excellent life-improvement ideas, which is just what we like to see everywhere.  From ear massages to discarding the handicap van in favor of the Maserati he successfully brings Philippe to feel more alive, and goes beyond that in helping him structure the relationships of his life including the one with his "pen pal" and his disrespectful daughter.   Walks by the river at 4am also prove to be quite helpful as well as playing in the snow, and all of these activities bond the two tremendously.  Philippe contributes by getting Driss to paraglide!  And we're afraid that Driss behaves as Peachy might at the Opera...a singing tree, my goodness!  Take us to a hockey game.

Driss also elucidates those around him - everyone from the person that parks in the non-parking space in front of the gate to Philippe's daughter's boyfriend, Driss perhaps ironically considering the Faberge egg, instills a sense of doing the right thing into those around him.
If you have not yet opened your mind to foreign films, it's high time for it with The Intouchables.  It will give you a natural high that is even better because it's real.

Whom You Know Gives the Intouchables Our Highest Recommendation.  It's brilliant.  It's hilarious.  Every aspect of character development is impeccable.  Just be pragmatic and watch it!

When Driss, an ex-con from the projects, is hired to take care of an eccentric French aristocrat named Philippe, his new-found job quickly becomes an unpredictable adventure. Speeding a Maserati through Paris, seducing women and paragliding over the Alps is just the beginning, as Driss turns the often humorous world of upper-class Parisian society upside-down. As this unlikely duo overcome adversity of every flavor in this true story, they also shatter their preconceptions of love, life and each other. Based on the #1 International Best Selling Book, “You Changed My Life”.

THE INTOUCHABLES was written and directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano. The film was produced by Nicolas Duval Adassovsky, Yann Zenou and Laurent Zeitoun and stars FranƧois Cluzet and Omar Sy.
