We think they can, we think they can, we think they can, we think they can.

The little engine that could, otherwise known as the NYCFC, continues to chug away and we are far happier with a tie than we would be with a loss.  However, that elusive win Peachy Deegan has yet to personally witness is still escaping her.  We were again honored to cover their game -this time this past Saturday, May 30, 2015 in person at Yankee Stadium.  This was the first meeting ever between these two clubs.

The first half was not as explosive as Jeremy Piven in the new Entourage movie that comes out tomorrow.  Next time, we'd like it to be as it would set a pace that we'd hope would dictate the remainder of the outcome.  However, what happened was that about 15 minutes in on a corner, Bruin scored for Houston and New York was at a deficit.  David Villa, savior of the team, rebounded in about the 45th minute at the tail end of the first half with New York City's lone goal, which was a momentum carrier for the second half.

The bad news is that no goals were scored in the second half.   The good news is that Josh Saunders continued to be amazing and that means none were scored against New York either; however, with 26,211 in attendance at Yankee Stadium, each was treated to two crucial goal opportunities by Jeb Brovsky (Regis if you were there he probably would have scored.  It would make Peachy so happy to see you at a game please!) that were oh so close.  But no cigar.

Post-game, Coach Kreis commented: "The players need to be a little more brave.  And a little more bold.  A little bit more self-belief about what they are and who they are.  We may not be the best team in the league for sure, but we are certainly capable of playing better.   We have to demand more from ourselves.  And believe a little bit more.  A lot of guys were just a little bit afraid."

We asked Jeb Brovsky to comment on his nice opportunities at the end.  He said: "The first one my teammate did well to find me I cut through the box and I tried to get a good hit on it and some power behind it and I think the goalkeeper made a fantastic world-class save and kept his team in it.  The second one, you're trained to hit that back post and hopefully you either tap it in or get it in goal and that's what I was trying to do-but unfortunately it didn't get tapped in and it wasn't on goal.  Next time I guess!  You've got to keep putting yourself in those positions to be there."

Peachy: What's the difference between a tie and a win?

Jeb: (laugh) "A lot of things.  This certainly doesn't feel too good.  We're a fantastic team when we're on our front foot and when we're attacking and taking chances.  We're pressing teams.  I think we did that in the second half and I thought the goal would come for sure.  I think everyone in the stadium thought it would come as well.  When it didn't it's super disappointing for the whole club, but a point's a point and we've got to use this momentum to go with it.  I think the coach is right, we've got quality in this club.  You look around the locker room and you have winners.  You've got guys that have won in different clubs that know what it takes to win and as a team we need to accept that we need to take more chances and be more risky moving forward and trust our talents a little bit more.  We've got the guys on the attack as well as the defense that can do it.  We all buy into that."

We asked Patrick Mullins how the team can be more consistent during the whole game rather than start off slow.   Patrick happened to play in the second half.  Peachy mentioned that consistency would be key to success he said: "I totally agree.  What we want consistency of is a certain level of confidence and know that even if they have spells of possession, that we're going to weather those storms and give ourselves a chance to win.  To be honest, we gave ourselves a chance to win at the end of the game but we'd be in better shape if we could go out and get the first goal and that is our goal next week."

We think they can, and they can.
Don't miss it for yourself.

The NYCFC tells us:

David Villa converted the first penalty kick in New York City FC history as the Club played to a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo in front of 26,211 on a beautiful Saturday evening at Yankee Stadium.

Dynamo defender Raul Rodriguez was called for a handball in the box in the 45th minute and the New York City FC captain stepped to the penalty spot. Villa, who was named the Heineken Star of the Match, found the bottom right corner of the net in the waning moments of the first half to tie the score at 1-all.

It was the third goal in Major League Soccer for Spain’s all-time scorer.

New York City FC improve to 1-7-5 (8 points) while Houston are now 4-5-5 (17 points).

“We were very close," Villa said. "I think we had good chances, and I think we dominated throughout the game. We just to have to keep going, and work harder, and look forward to the next game vs. Philadelphia.”

The Dynamo took an early lead on a right-footed blast by forward Will Bruin. Alexander Lopez’s corner kick was headed down into a dangerous area by David Horst as Bruin one-timed his volley into the back of the net from 6 yards out in the 16th minute.

“It’s definitely something that we need to stop doing," midfielder Mix Diskerud said. "We can’t let the other team score the first goal every single time and to let that happen in the first 30 minutes, that’s not good enough.”

New York City FC had a chance to respond in the 27th. Josh Saunders’ goal kick was headed on by both Adam Nemec, who was back in the lineup for the first time since picking up an injury on April 24 at Chicago, and then by Villa. Sebastian Velasquez ran onto the ball, made a move on a defender but his left-footed shot went into the hands of Houston goalie Tyler Deric.

Rodriguez almost doubled the visitors' advantage two minutes later. The defender’s ball from the right flank went off the top of the crossbar. Houston again had a chance as DaMarcus Beasley’s attempt was blasted into the side netting in the 33rd minute.

New York City kept pressing and got their break right before the interval. Defender Jeb Brovsky served up a dangerous ball into the box. Nemec and Rodriguez both jumped up for it and the latter was called for the infraction.

The score was 1-1 at halftime.

In the 55th minute, Giles Barnes made a nifty move to get to the touchline and sprinted toward the net, but Saunders came out to slide tackle the ball away.

New York City FC almost took an advantage 20 minutes later as Nemec’s left-footed lob went across the box and hit the top of the crossbar.

The Club had three chance to steal the spoils in the match’s waning minutes. First, second-half substitution Kwadwo Poku made a great run to the end line, cut back inside and served up the ball into the box. Brovsky met it with his head, but Deric made a great save, pushing the ball onto the post. Patrick Mullins then had an attempt in stoppage time, but his shot went just wide. Finally, Mix served up an enticing ball to the back post that was met by Brovsky, but his attempt went across the face of the goal.

New York City FC return to action against the Philadelphia Union on June 6. Kickoff is 7 p.m. EDT from PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The match will be broadcast on YES Network and 970 AM.
