Essence and Alchemy is the most comprehensive book on perfume that Peachy Deegan has ever read. Winner of the Sense of Smell Institute’s Richard B. Solomon Award, it not only gives a fabulous account of the history of perfume, but it goes beyond the surface of every aspect of perfume, letting inquisitive minds reach towards the answers to any question that they might have in regards to their love of perfume.

Here at Whom You Know, you KNOW we love love love scent from our Product Review column- yes we have reviewed Mandy's perfume!- and even before Whom You Know we belonged to Sniffapalooza.

From Alchemy, the "ancient art that undertook to convert raw matter, through a series of transformations, into a perfect and purified form," to the business of perfume which began as an outgrowth of the glove industry - "owing to the popularity of perfumed gloves in France from the sixteenth century on" you will learn everything you wanted to know that happened before you hit the spritz button on your favorite bottle when you finish reading this book.

Did you know the first celebrity perfumer was on London's Strand? Do you know that Jicky by Guerlain was the first modern perfume? Do you know the difference between natural and synthetic perfume? We would tell you all of Mandy's answers but Peachy Deegan highly recommends you read the book instead!

While others sit on the beach reading the most cliche novel of the summer, you can instead learn something worthwhile about how Chanel No 5 came to be! Learn about the different notes...and quite possibly by the end of the book you may even be inspired to make your own perfume! Peachy might, if she ever gets to the bottom of her post pile!

Whom You Know strongly recommends Essence and Alchemy: A Natural History of Perfume by Mandy Aftel!!!
