Whom You Know Kicks Off Our Coverage of Christie's with: Master of Wine / Annual Champagne Tasting 2009

What could be better on a Monday afternoon than sipping the best champagnes in the world at Christie's Auction House in Rockefeller Center? Peachy Deegan cannot think of one thing that could be better!

Yesterday 300 guests were treated to the most fabulous champagnes that are able to be imported into the U.S. and we could not have been more pleased. This was the 5th Annual Champagne Tasting by the Institute of Masters of Wine, North America and was made possible through the generous support of Moet Hennessy USA.

Two sessions were offered: noon to 2pm and 2:30pm to 4:30pm at Christie's in 20 Rockefeller Plaza. Of the approximately 10,000 Champagnes that are made worldwide, about 300 (cream of the crop!) are imported into the U.S.. Peachy Deegan's favorite was the Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin Demi-Sec. We are probably a little biased by the wonderful book we read on this house, however:

Featured counterclockwise around the room were: Extra Brut, Blanc des Blancs, Non-Vintage, Rose, Vintage and Dose. Peachy did meet a few celebrating their birthdays-cheers to them! In particular Jessica Mills was celebrating her July 27th birthday a bit belatedly, but quite fabulously!

The Institute of Masters of Wine hosted the 2009 Annual Champagne Tasting to be held in both New York (August 31st) and in San Francisco (September 28nd). These events promise to continue to be among the premier wine tasting events of the year, held at the outset of the holiday season under optimal conditions in the heart of the best markets in the United States for champagne.

In order to avoid the overcrowding typical of trade tastings, each tasting will be limited to 300 attendees, including Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, students of wine, key wine buyers in the retail and restaurant trade, and journalists such as Peachy Deegan from Whom You Know.

Each tasting will be strictly limited to 300 attendees. In New York, the tickets will be valid, as in the past, for either one of two tasting slots, from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm, and from 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm. Due to the constraints of the venue, there will be a single session in San Francisco from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Cost of the tickets for either event will be $50.00.

This tasting will feature a broad survey of champagne currently on the market from every category: non-vintage, vintage, rosé, blanc de blancs, prestige cuvée, and sweeter (dosé) styles, including extra-sec, sec, demi-sec, and riche. Wines will be tasted from the most well-known and established houses along with exciting small growers, and will include many rare and difficult to procure bottlings.
Tickets for this event will be sold strictly on a first come, first served basis, and since the number of places is limited, we encourage you to respond promptly. Please see our notice for the appropriate dates at http://www.localwineevents.com/. In the event of any questions regarding this tasting, please do not hesitate to contact us by sending an email to charles@curtismw.com.
