Tasty Tidbits: Bistro Chat Noir

Bistro Chat Noir is designed, owned and operated by Suzanne Latapie, since September, 2006.

Nestled into the first floor of a 1920’s Rosario Candela designed townhouse, Bistro Chat Noir has created an “inn-like” atmosphere that is cozy and casual, yet elegant. Crimson banquettes, oil paintings by Suzanne’s great grandfather-in-law; Louis Latapie, black and white Nicolas prints and vintage “cartoons” from French newspapers are all framed discretely and adorn simple cream walls;  while hand-made sconces bathe the space in a romantic glow.

The cuisine is made with top-notch ingredients. Saki Tuna, Meyer Beef, and Satur farm vegetables from the North Fork of Long Island (where Suzanne and her family spend weekends), assure the client total satisfaction and quality. The menu is French, with an American twist.  Onion Soup, Frisee Salad, Marinated Skirt Steak Béarnaise highlight the French tone, while the Truffle Mac n Cheese, California Nicoise and Braised Short Ribs show-case popular American classics. There is something for everyone at Bistro Chat Noir.

The bistro named for and inspired by an 1880’s Parisian cabaret of the same name, is exactly what you’d want from your local dining-room-away-from-home. Located in the heart of Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side, Bistro Chat Noir is the perfect place to cool your “kitten heels” after a day of work, shopping, or running the kids to and from school.

Owner, Suzanne Latapie personally meets and greets her guests daily, and tends to treat everyone as though she has known them for years. Suzanne has been “front of the house” at several UES venues, the last being La Goulue on Madison, for nearly 10 years with her husband, and then LG partner, Francois Latapie. Thanks to Francois, she entered this business 25 years ago and has never looked back. This is Suzanne’s first solo restaurant venture. Francois, her husband sold his interest in both La Goulue and Orsay, and will open a Lyonnais style Bistro this fall in the old Café Bruxelles space, located at 118 Greenwich Avenue.

Chef Gustavo Aguiar is a new-comer to the New York dining scene. A native of Brazil, Gustavo has added variety, energy and spice to the menu at Bistro Chat Noir. His recipes for steak tartar and chocolate soufflé are among the bistro’s most requested dishes. His latest menu is the largest selections since opening and includes a creamy ravioli de Royan, pan-seared salmon with brussel sprout leaves and French lentils; sea scallops puttanesca; and a succulent sliced duck breast with wild rice, radish, turnips and rainbow carrots.

The staff in both the kitchen and dining room is small, and tries to get to know each client personally. Waiters try to accommodate all special requests.

Bistro Chat Noir is open seven days a week, for lunch, Sunday brunch and dinner.
Bistro Chat Noir opened on September 12, 2006.
