EXHIBITION AND PROGRAM LISTINGS
October 2010

October 5, 2010 – January 31, 2011

An exhibition recalling the desperate fight for life that used to be waged by juvenile diabetes patients, and commemorating the events of 1921 that inaugurated a new era of hope for them and their families. Exploring the roles of science, government, higher education and industry in developing and distributing a life-saving drug, the exhibition will bring to life the personalities who discovered insulin and raced to bring it to the world, and will tell the story of one extraordinary New York girl—Elizabeth Evans Hughes--who was among the very first patients to be saved. The exhibit will feature digital interactives, film, artifacts, and ephemera drawn form the Historical Society’s own collections and from the University of Toronto, Eli Lilly and Company, the Rockefeller Institute, the Joslin Clinic, and New York Academy of Medicine.

The Historical Society’s presentation of the exhibition will coincide with the publication of Breakthrough: Elizabeth Hughes, the Discovery of Insulin, and the Making of a Medical Miracle by Arthur Ainsberg and Thea Cooper to be published August 31, 2010, by St. Martin’s Press.

September 17, 2010 – January 9, 2011

Organized by New-York Historical Society and El Museo del Barrio and will be on display at El Museo del Barrio located on 1230 5th Avenue.
The first exhibition to explore how New York's long and deep involvement with Spain and Latin America has affected virtually every aspect of the city's development, from commerce, manufacturing and transportation to communications, entertainment and the arts. Bringing together the resources of New York's oldest museum and its leading Latino cultural institution, this unprecedented exhibition will span three centuries of history: from the founding of New Amsterdam in the 1600s as a foothold against the Spanish empire to the present day, as represented by a specially commissioned documentary by award-winning filmmaker Ric Burns. Nueva York will bring this story to life with hands-on interactive displays, listening stations, video experiences and some 200 rare and historic maps, letters, broadsides, paintings, drawings and other objects drawn from the collections of the two museums, as well as from many other distinguished institutions and private collections.

Niall Ferguson

Niall Ferguson tells the story of Siegmund Warburg, a refugee from Hitler’s Germany who rose to become one of the dominant figures in finance in post-war Europe. He was one of the architects of European financial integration and a key advisor to governments in London, Tokyo, and Jerusalem. An obsessive perfectionist with an aversion to excessive risk, Warburg came to embody the ideals of high finance and was as much a psychologist, politician, and actor-manger as he was a banker.

Thursday, October 14, 6:30 PM

David Maraniss, Bert Sugar, Julio Pabón

Roberto Clemente was more than just a baseball player: he was a trailblazer, a humanitarian, and an icon to millions. In 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was selected to 12 All-Star Games, won the National League MVP Award, and is a member of the exclusive 3,000 hit club. Off the field, he was famous for charity work in his home of Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. He died tragically at age 38, in a plane crash, while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He was elected posthumously to the Hall of Fame, becoming the first Latin American to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Accompanied by clips from the documentary The Legacy of #21: The Life and Times of Roberto Clemente, experts discuss Clemente’s life and career and the debate on retiring his #21 for all time. The New-York Historical Society’s Nueva York series of programs is generously supported by American Express.

Tuesday, October 19, 6:30 PM

Ron Chernow, Stacy Schiff

In this program, celebrated biographer Ron Chernow sits down with Stacy Schiff and brings to life a dashing, passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods, shattering the stereotype of Washington as a stolid, unemotional man. Chernow also describes a canny political genius who shaped the new federal government and inspired a new nation.

Sean Wilentz, Rosanne Cash, Bill Flanagan

Few artists have had as profound and complicated an impact on American history as Bob Dylan – and even fewer have had so varied and unpredictable a career. In this program, authors and musicians tackle Dylan from all angles – musically, historically, and personally – beginning with his explosion onto the scene in 1961 up to today.

Through the lens of the African Diaspora, Professor Gates, joined by Bob Herbert and Simon Schama, will examine the roots of cultural studies and its role in contemporary thought.

Barnet Schecter

This event will be held at the New-York Historical Society Library, Enter at 5 West 76th Street at Central Park West
Join us for this unique and intimate presentation in the New-York Historical Society Library, including a special display of selections from the Library's collection of Erskine-DeWitt manuscript maps, drawn by George Washington's cartographer to guide him in battle. Historian Barnet Schecter will transport us to the scenes of Washington's most dramatic exploits and remarkable achievements — from the French and Indian War to the American Revolution to the highest elected office in the new republic. From his teens until his death, maps were always central to Washington's work, and after his death, many of his most important maps were bound into an atlas that remained in his family for many years. Accompanied also by slides, Schecter crafts a singular portrait of our first Founding Father.

Crowded lower Manhattan and its Newspaper Row were once host to pioneer women activists: the birth-control advocate Margaret Sanger, suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Nellie Bly of the New York World, Margaret Fuller of the New-York Tribune, the abolitionist Sojourner Truth, and more. Women's eNews, an independent nonprofit Web news site, has created a walking tour to honor its foremothers in journalism and reform. Walking tours are limited to 35 guests per tour.
