Sotheby's To Host Fundraiser For The Empire Dragon Boat Team Of New York

On Wednesday 7 September 2011 Sotheby’s will host a reception and fundraiser for the Empire Dragon Boat Team of New York, the city’s first team manned by women who have had cancer. Dragon Boat racing is a colorful, ancient Chinese sport involving teams of twenty paddlers, seated in a 40-foot-long wooden narrow boat, with the display of a fierce dragon head on the prow and dragon tail on the stern. As in ancient China, a drummer sits on the bow to set the beat for the paddlers.

Carmen Melián, Head of Latin American Art at Sotheby’s and a member of the Empire Dragon Boat Team commented: “Being part of the Empire Dragon Boat Team has been an amazing experience. The exercise programs at Sloan Kettering have been very important for my recovery and the camaraderie and challenge of the Dragon boat team makes us all try to reach farther during our long recoveries. I am delighted that Sotheby’s is supporting the team by hosting this event.”
