SUNDAY SCHOLARS

Museum Rotunda
Free with Family Membership or $125 per student for non-members.
Historians and art historians regularly come to the New-York Historical Society to conduct research. Now, budding scholars will have the chance to do the same. High school students from the New York City metropolitan area are invited to spend six Sunday afternoons examining art, artifacts and documents. Together, they will choose and research a topic in American History and create a video guide to the Museum's collections for our website.

Living History Days:

1st Rhode Island Regiment (Continental)
Saturday, December 3, 10 am
As the first all-Black regiment in America, the 1st Rhode Island Regiment was assembled into service in late 1776 and early 1777. The Regiment fought in      the battle of Newport in 1778, spent the infamous winter at Valley Forge, and participated in the Yorktown campaign without receiving any post-war compensation for their efforts. Since 2002, the 1st Rhode Island re-enactors have portrayed the regiment by recreating battles and encampments and presenting programs to audiences in an attempt to educate them about the role of African-Americans in the war effort.

Colonel Albert Pawling’s Independent Corps or Levies (Continental)

Albert Pawling was born in Dutchess County, New York and fought with his Independent Corps of Levies to defend the New York frontier. Levies consisted of men taken from militias to join the ranks of regular troops or form their own independent units. Pawling’s Levies were raised in New York and fought for the Continental forces through out the Revolution. His Levy guarded forts in Ulster and Orange counties in upstate New York from 1779 to 1781.

2^nd New York Provincial Battalion (Continental)

Saturday, December 17, 10 am
The 2nd New York Provincial Battalion was raised in 1775 and composed of various volunteer companies previously formed by the Albany County Committee of Safety. After defending Fort Ticonderoga near Lake Champlain, the Battalion participated in the Invasion of Canada alongside Colonel Peter Gansevoort and General Richard Montgomery. The regiment also participated in several victories in the struggle for independence, including the Battles of Saratoga, the Battle of Monmouth and the Battle of Yorktown.
