Kevin Carroll, MS, CP, FAAOP is an accomplished healthcare professional with over 30 years as a practicing prosthetist, visionary researcher, and skilled educator. As Vice President of Prosthetics for Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, Carroll travels both nationally and internationally presenting scientific symposiums and managing clinics for difficult prosthetic cases. He has appeared internationally on news broadcasts such as Dateline, 20/20, CBS Early Show, NBC Nightly News, ABC’s Good Morning America, and the Discovery Channel.

Carroll’s commitment to improving prosthetics has placed him at the forefront of numerous prosthetic breakthroughs. He is co-developer of the patented Hanger ComfortFlex™ Socket System; a bone and muscle contoured socket that revolutionized socket design and comfort. He is also engaged in the development of the Sense of Feel and Hot and Cold Sensory Systems and the Neuropathic Foot Protection System for diabetic patients.

Carroll’s guiding philosophy is simple: people first. By listening to each person’s thoughts and concerns, and understanding their unique situations, Carroll has found a sure path to assisting people in their rehabilitation. He specializes in the care of older adults and has a degree in gerontology, enhancing his expertise in this area.

When not caring for his human patients, Carroll volunteers weekends to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where he works with a young amputee dolphin. Carroll and his Hanger colleague Dan Strzempka co-developed the world’s first prosthetic tail that replaces the entire tail fluke. A young Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Winter was caught in a crab trap near Cape Canaveral in December 2005, when she was just three-months-old. Her tail fluke eventually came off, as it was severely damaged by the trap’s rope entanglement. Winter received round-the-clock medical attention to save her life. Having survived, she adapted to a less efficient, damaging side-to-side swimming style, as there was no tail fluke to give her thrust. Thanks to Carroll and Strzempka’s ingenuity, Winter became the first dolphin to have her entire tail fluke replaced with a prosthetic device. The real life survival story of Winter and Carroll’s innovative prosthetic tail design came alive on the silver screen nationwide September 23, 2011 in a 3D feature film titled “Dolphin Tale, “ which stars Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Kris Kristopherson, and Harry Connick, Jr. Playing a prosthetist, Freeman portrays the prosthetic work completed Carroll and Strzempka.

Carroll is an American Board Certified Prosthetist and was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthotics and Prosthetics, one of the highest honors of the profession. He is a member of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics, a professional advisor for the Amputee Coalition, a member of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, and a member of the British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BAPO).

Carroll’s practice began in his native country of Ireland in 1978 at the National Medical Rehabilitation Center in Dublin. In 1984, he moved to the United States, and later became Vice President of Prosthetics for Nova Care Sabolich, and then Vice President of Prosthetics for Hanger. We are so pleased to present Kevin Carroll as our latest Mover and Shaker! Peachy Deegan interviewed Kevin Carroll for Whom You Know.
Kevin Carroll and Winter the Dolphin

Peachy Deegan: When you were growing up, did you exhibit a predisposition to be inclined towards the healthcare profession, and if yes, how so?
Kevin Carroll: As a child growing up in Ireland, my mother was very involved with volunteering and fundraising. My mom was always caring for people, so I grew up around that and volunteered at a hospital for children. Whenever I would come across a little bird or an animal that had been injured, I would make a splint for them. My mom was a great role model.

At what point in the real life evolution of Winter's story did you realize it had big screen potential and what made you realize this?
I actually never thought about it as having big screen potential. I was caught by surprise when they said they were going to turn Winter’s story into a movie.

What was your reaction to Morgan Freeman playing you in the movie?
I was very honored when I found out Morgan Freeman was portraying myself and my colleague Dan Strzempka.

What should the world know about Winter that they don't know yet?
Winter continues to be herself – a happy little dolphin. She hasn’t let the fame go to her head!

What do all the professional designations after your name mean-please explain them to our audience.
The MS represents my Masters of Science degree in Counseling Psychology which I received from Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The CP means “certified prosthetist”. I’ve been certified by the American Board of Certified Prosthetists
The FAAOP means “Fellow of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists” which is one of the highest honors in the profession.

We love, love, love Ireland and Peachy spent a semester at UCC. What should most Americans know about Ireland that most do not know?
It’s the friendliest country in the world! The very minute people in Ireland meet you they embrace you and take you in as part of their family.

How are you best inspired to come up with new ways of solving problems professionally in what you do?
My work with patients everyday inspires me to persevere and continue to come up with new prosthetic systems and developments that will help increase their mobility. It's priceless to be able to see a patient take their firsts steps using their new prosthetic devices and I’m honored to play a part in the process.

Does the Dolphin Tale movie differ much from the real life version you live or not much, and if it does differ, how so?
The movie is loosely based on the real life story of Winter. Hollywood wants to make movies interesting for the audience, but since Winter’s story is probably one of the most interesting stories there is, they didn’t have to stretch it too far to capture the attention of the audience.

What or who has had the most influence on your pursuit of excellence?
I suppose it’s self-driven. Perfectionism can be a good thing, and a bad thing. You can drive yourself crazy, but the people on the receiving end greatly appreciate it!

What are you proudest of and why?
My children, my wife and my family. Without their support I wouldn’t be able to get to do what I do.

What would you like to do professionally that you have not yet had the opportunity to do?
Personally, I’d like to create more opportunities for people in need that may not otherwise get them, especially children. I’d like to figure out a way to help more people; there’s a lot of need out there.

What honors and awards have you received in your profession?
At the turn of the millennium, my hometown in Ireland gave be the “Person of the Year Award” which I’m very proud of! Also, I was featured in TIME Magazine’s article titled “Innovators: Building a Better Athlete” which introduced six expert craftsmen and scientists who have developed mechanisms and methods that improve athletic performance.

What is your favorite place to be in Manhattan?
Every time I visit Manhattan I take a walk in Central Park.

What is your favorite shop in Manhattan?
Sam Ash Music Store on 48th Street (it used to be called Manny’s).

What is your favorite drink?
Orange juice with no ice.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at a cocktail party?
I would have to say competing with my colleague Wallis Farraday to capture the audience’s attention on stage. He’s from New Zealand so he did the Haka dance and I played my spoons!

What is your favorite restaurant in Manhattan?
I actually try to not repeat restaurants when I travel; I like to try new places.

What is your favorite Manhattan book?
I know it’s not a book, but I like to read the New Yorker magazine.

Who would you like to be for a day and why?
I’d like to be Morgan Freeman because I got to know him briefly while shooting the movie Dolphin Tale. I think he’s a very inspirational individual. The roles that he gets to play such as Nelson Mandela, has allowed him to interact with some of the world’s most influential thinkers.

If you could have anything in Manhattan named after you what would it be and why?
Central Park because I like open spaces and I like how it creates an ambiance of happiness for people who go there. It’s rare that you’ll see a sad face in Central Park!

What has been your best Manhattan athletic experience?
Running with our prosthetic users in Central Park.

What is your favorite thing to do in Manhattan that you can do nowhere else?
I have the opportunity to sit and visit with my friend and colleague John Rheinstein. We philosophize about what’s going on in the world. We are also able to chat about what’s going on in the field of prosthetics.

If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
George Burns; he was a great comedian, had a great outlook on life, and always looked to the future. He even had a contract to play at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for his 100th birthday.

What has been your best Manhattan art or music experience?
Going to Madison Square Garden with my wife to see Elton John in concert.

What do you personally do or what have you done to give back to the world?
The gift that keeps on giving is to go and educate, so I would have to say educating my colleagues, and the families that I work with. I’d also say looking out for the environment and helping injured wild life.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
I think there’s a variety of great material on here and I enjoy it all!

Other than Movers and Shakers of course, what is your favorite Whom You Know column and what do you like about it?
I would say the Charity and Event column because I really have a passion for charitable work and helping others.

Have you drank The Peachy Deegan yet and if not, why not?
I haven’t had the opportunity to try it, but I would definitely like to (the non-alcohol version).

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I enjoy playing the spoons! I learned how to play growing up in Ireland. I also enjoy playing the mandolin, banjo, and other string instruments.

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?

The exceptional collectibles range from first edition classic comic books to rare American currency to an early 20th century baseball icon's checkbook, and much more in-between, all chosen for their rarity, value and the uniqueness of the consignor's story.

KEEPING AMERICA ON TOP: WHOM YOU KNOW CELEBRATES AMERICAN STYLE INTELLIGENCE and EXCELLENCE with the Mission of the Made in the USA Foundation

The Made in the USA Foundation was created to promote products made in the USA, domestically and overseas, and to promote American values around the world. A part of this mission is to raise standards around the world concerning minimum wages, environmental rules, labor rights and human rights.

What Organizations Support the Made in the USA Foundation?

The Made in the USA Foundation was formed in 1989 with matching grants from the United Auto Works and the Ford Motor Company. The intent was that the Foundation would be neither pro nor anti-union. Major donors to the Foundation have been Allen Edmonds Shoe Company, Anchor Hocking Glass, Anheuser Busch, Annin Flagmakers, American Apparel, Bed Head Pajamas, Bentley Prince Street Carpets, Colt’s Manufacturing Co., Ford Motor Company, Kellex Furniture, Milliken & Co., New Era Cap Company, New Balance Shoes, Oreck Vacuum Cleaner Co., Vitamix, Whirlpool Foundation, United Auto Workers, United Steelworkers Union, Communication Workers of America, Teamsters Union, Laborers International Union, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and many other unions and responsible corporations.

Litigation

The Foundation has brought many cases in its own name, and supported other lawsuits that were consistent with its purposes and has had many victories in the courts. Recently the California Supreme Court, in a landmark decision in a case filed by MUSA generalcounsel against Kwikset Locks, ruled that consumers can file court cases when a manufacturer labels a product as “Made in the USA” and the product is not American-made. California’s highest court ruled: “Simply stated: labels matter. . . .to some consumers, processes and places of origin matter. . . . in particular, to some consumers, the ‘Made in U.S.A.’ label matters.”

The Foundation also created the American Crafts Project in 1999. This project assists Am-erican designers who have their works copied overseas. This project has won 20 cases against Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Kohls and many other U.S. retailers.

Legislation

The Foundation developed and supported two pieces of federal legislation that have been en-acted into law. The first success was passage of the American Automobile Labeling Act. This law requires all new cars and trucks to have a label on the window of the vehicle that states where the vehicle was assembled, the percentage of U.S. and imported content and where the engine and transmission were made.

The Foundation worked for many years on passage of the Country of Origin Labeling Act. This law requires grocery stores to label fresh fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, beef, lamb and other meats with their country of origin.

What the Foundation Stands For

q The Foundation supports getting tough with China for manipulating its currency, human rights and labor rights violations, allowing theft of intellectual property and other unfair trading practices.q The Foundation supports international environmental standards for power plants, steel mills, and other factories. This will clean the air, reduce global warming and make com-petition fairer.

q The Foundation supports a global min-imum wage for exporting industries. This will raise wages around the world, and prevent companies from continually shopping the globe for cheaper and cheaper labor.

q The Foundation supports strict enforce-ment of the ban on importing products made with child and slave labor.

q The Foundation support fair trade, as opposed to “free trade.” Fair trade means that workers have the right a decent wage, the right to organize, manufacturers must meet strict environental standards, child labor is prohibited, and intellectual property rights (copyrights, patents) are protected.

q The Foundation supports restrictions on outsourcing government work and services in-volving medical records, credit card information and social security card numbers.

q The Foundation is pressuring the U.S. government to buy American-made products for sale at Army, Navy and Air Force exchanges (PXs), National Parks, the Smithsonian and other U.S. government facilities.

This Christmas season, you want to be the one that finds the enticing, exotic, enthralling fragrance from the French West Indies to give to your loved one!  With a little help from Whom You Know of course... An aromatic cyprus fragrance with tropical notes against a background of amber and a slight hint of incense. This masculine scent will transport you back to your island adventures. Take a Trip to London: The New Ink Art from China at the Saatchi Gallery and Asia House by Michael Goedhuis 2012

Xu Lei, Tree of Blue Underglaze, 2008, Ink and color on xuan paper, (213 x 125 cm)

Ink is an exhibition featuring the finest examples of contemporary Chinese Ink art at London’s landmark Saatchi gallery and subsequently at Asia House. The exhibition, curated by Michael Goedhuis, is the first comprehensive display of this genre to be shown in a public gallery of international standing and draws together major examples from distinguished private collections. Timed to coincide with London in June when art and antique collectors from all over the world descend on the capital, this cutting-edge show will feature ground-breaking artists from the internationally recognized Xu Lei to the avant-garde Qiu Anxiong. Ink will run fromSaturday 16 June to Thursday 28 June 2012 at the Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York's Square, London, SW3 4SQ.

“I am delighted to be working with the Saatchi Gallery to finally be able to provide the general public access to The New Ink Art which is perhaps the boldest pictorial experiment in art today. Artists trained in, and deeply knowledgeable of classical painting, are meeting the challenge of creating a pictorial language that is a convincing expression of the world of TODAY and in particular the transformed world of China. It is the theme of this exhibition to define just how audacious and innovative the best of these artists are, despite, or perhaps because of, their deep study of the past. Just as Cezanne and Picasso assimilated the work of Poussin and Velazquez and other Old Masters in order to develop their own revolutionary language, so the ink artists are grappling with the same challenge – how to express the transformation of their society with works that are meaningful precisely because they take account of the past in order to make sense of the present”.

The New Ink Art is increasingly being recognised, not only in China but also internationally, as the most audacious and idealistic movement in contemporary culture and is poised to shortly enter the mainstream of the art-world’s focus.

Michael Goedhuis, who was the first dealer in the west to recognize the significance of these radical innovations in Chinese culture, has concentrated in the past eighteen months on identifying for this exhibition the artists who are in the process of shifting the axis of Chinese aesthetics. It is for this reason that informed art-lovers and collectors and indeed the public at large will be drawn to the Saatchi Gallery for this culturally ground-breaking initiative. Although this exhibition is a loan show and works will therefore not be for sale, it is significant that the price range for the best of contemporary ink paintings is still very accessible by international standards.

A highlight of the exhibition is Tree of Blue Underglaze by the internationally feted artist Xu Lei who last year was the chosen artist for the design of the 2008 vintage Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine label. Inspired by the significance of the year 2008 for the Chinese and to highlight Mouton’s stature in the Chinese wine market, Mouton selected a Chinese artist. Xu Lei himself is one of China’s foremost artists and a leader in the innovative field of ink painting; he serves as the art director of the Today Art Museum in Beijing and is the editor-in-chief of the magazine ‘Classics’.

Qiu Jie, Mao in the Cotton Field , 2007, pencil on paper, (150 x 168 cm)

Other works of note include Gao Xingjian represented by the painting Dream Mountain (La Montagne de Rêve), who was born in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province in 1940. A writer, translator and dramatist he moved to Paris in the 1980s as a political refugee. Here he immersed himself in nature creating semi- abstracted landscapes, believing that art should not be used for political activism, but instead should be an expression of the soul. He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 2000. Qiu Jie, who was born in Shanghai in 1960, grew up during the most violent phase of the Cultural Revolution and by the age of 10 was nurturing his talent making copies of propaganda images from local newspapers. He creates images blending stark themes from the Cultural Revolution with striking elements from contemporary culture (see illustration).

Artists to be exhibited include:
Gao Xingjian (), Gu Wenda (), Huan Yong Ping (),Jennifer Wen Ma (), Li Huayi (), Li Jin (), Liu Dan (), Liu Kuo-sung (), Liu Qinghe (), Liu Wei (), Lo Ch’ing (), Lu Hao (), Qin Feng (), Qiu Anxiong()Qiu Deshu (),Qiu Jie (), Qiu Zhijie (), Wang Dongling(), Wei Ligang (), Wilson Shieh ( ), Wu Yi (), Xu Bing (),Xu Lei (), Yang Jiechang (), Yang Yanping (), Yao Jui-chung (), Zeng Shanqing (), Zeng Xiaojun (), and Zhang Huan ().

After the Saatchi Gallery, the exhibition will travel to Asia House where it will remain until the end of July. Founded in London in 1996, Asia House is the leading pan-Asian, non-profit and non-political organisation in Britain.

Did you know that when you order online through Folkmanis.com, you're actually ordering from a small, local retailer in your area? Folkmanis uses Shopatron, a third party, which offers a secure online system that helps us place our online orders with participating retailers who have the puppet you ordered in stock. That way you get your order shipped quickly, and in doing so are helping out a local small business. Folkmanis, Inc. is the manufacturer of Folkmanis Puppets, we sell in bulk to businesses and retailers only.

How to care for Stuffed Animals according to Elaine Kollias,
Marketing Director of
Folkmanis, Inc.

Cleaning Recommendations for Furry Plush Puppets:
Our number one rule: DO NOT PUT IN THE DRYER. The heat on the dryer drum will singe the fibers and make it coarse and/or frizzy. Even dryers with low heat features can destroy your puppet. Furry plush puppets are best surface-washed in this manner: Use lukewarm water and sponge with Woolite® or other mild laundry detergent to wet and lather fur. Rinse surface with sponge. Heavily soiled furry plush may be washed by hand or in a washing machine in a laundry bag on a gentle cycle using gentle detergent—no bleach, using cold or warm water—not hot. Dry by gently squeezing between towels, or hanging from clothesline to drip-dry. After it’s air-dried, brush with wire dog brush to fluff the furry plush. When brushing face, be careful to avoid scratching the eyes or pulling out the threads in ears, nose, or mouth areas.

We also post this for our customers:

Care and feeding of your Folkmanis Puppets:
You can maintain your puppets' appearance by brushing whenever they need a touch up. Animals with long plush also enjoy a nice fluffing once in awhile. To freshen them up, we recommend a shake-out and thorough grooming with a wire or coarse-bristled brush. By brushing with – rather than against – the fabric grain, you’ll quickly restore the quality and realism of the animal’s fur. BUT NOTE THIS WARNING: a strong brush is no friend to the eyes and ears of an animal. Both can be scratched and damaged if care is not taken to avoid these sensitive areas.

Spa Naturals by South of France Citrus Mint Energizing Cleanser Recommended by the Beautiful People of Whom You Know

The first thing I noticed about this cleanser was how great it smelled. It smells fresh and clean and not overpowering at all. I love mint cleaners in general, and this cleanser lived up to my expectations. The packaging is a pretty teal color and you could easily leave it on your counter on display. The cleanser also did exactly what it said it was going to do. It left my face clean and fresh and not tight. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a natural and effective face wash.

If you are searching for a great face cleanser that is also 100% natural, search no longer! Spa Naturals by South of France offers a fabulous Citrus Mint Energizing Cleanser. The scent of this cleanser is so intoxicating, you will actually look forward to washing your face! South of France is committed to producing safe, good-for-you products. Their products are cruelty-free, contain no harmful chemicals and are eco-conscious. Their citrus mint cleanser is so luxurious, you need only a dime sized amount. Apply to moistened skin, lather and rinse. I adore this cleanser, it is a great way to start and end your day.

Spa Naturals Energizing Cleanser is probably my new favorite face wash. I love its fresh, clean scent! Since I received it, I've been using it morning and night every day! It truly lives up to its name, too! As I wash my face, my skin actually feels energized! Also, it's 100% natural!

The Spa Naturals Citrus Mint Cleanser has left my skin feeling clean and refreshed. I could feel it working as I washed my face with it. I loved the mint and citrus scents –transporting me to my favorite spa. I am so happy to have found a produce that gives me spa quality results. After just a few days of using it, my skin hasn’t looked this clear in years! The BPA & Phthalatate-Free container is the perfect size for your favorite person’s Christmas stocking!

Cleansers are my thing. The important step in wearing make-up is getting it off, especially before you settle in for the night. Skin needs to breathe, and in the NYC environment, we need all the help we can get. South of France Spa Naturals gives us a thick, rich, creamy cleanser that does it's job efficiently, and leaves your face happy. Part of any natural product is the lack of chemicals included. Spa Naturals goes it one more: container safety. With so many companies jumping onto the green bandwagon, it's important to support the newly developed industry of safe packaging. Bear in mind the contents, and the container., and keep your skin happy and the environment safe.

***

Many skincare products today are full of synthetic and harmful chemicals such as EDTA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Parabens, BPA, Phthalates, and more. When did we decide that chemicals are necessary to clean our skin? Spa Naturals was created to prove to the world that skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Spa Naturals products include only 100% natural, nourishing elements from land and sea, while still effectively delivering desired results, naturally.

Lately there has been heavy media coverage of the harmful effects of chemicals additives; linking their use to cancer and other ailments. However, it is not solely the ingredients, but also the packaging that can be harmful. Recent reports on the harmful effects of BPA and Phthalates in plastics led Spa Naturals to go even further in developing a safe product. Spa Naturals is one of the first in the skincare industry to use a BPA and Phthalate free recyclable plastic canister. Being all-natural is not enough, why make a natural product if the chemicals in the plastic containers still contaminate the product with which they come into contact? For more product information including ingredients and packaging, visit http://www.goodhealthnaturalproducts.com/spa-naturals/

The average consumer associates natural products with increased cost. Spa Naturals couples natural ingredients with affordability; allowing the everyday consumer the opportunity to choose natural skincare without breaking the bank. The Spa Naturals skincare line includes five products, all of which are available in Energizing Citrus Mint, Refreshing Orange Ginger, and Soothing Cucumber Aloe scents. The 3.5 oz facial bar retails for only $5 while the 3oz cream cleanser, scrub, mask, and moisturizer are just $12 each. Spa Naturals is also sold in a gift set containing all five items in an Abaca tote bag for only $45 (an $8 value).

During Spa Naturals’ development, we asked women what they truly wanted in terms of skincare; after years of research and countless focus groups, Spa Naturals has been developed to cater to women’s desires. Spa Naturals simply fits your mood, your lifestyle, your conscience, your budget, and your ideals.

Your life is complicated enough; your skincare doesn’t have to be.

And, I’ve found amazing coupons on GoodShop as well – it’s a no-brainer to use this site!”

The GoodSearch and GoodShop team is revolutionizing online philanthropy so that no one is denied the opportunity to support the causes most important to them, especially during tough economic times. “According to a new study by Dunham and Company, over two thirds of donors plan to cut back on giving this year due to the tough economy” said Scott Garell, CEO of GoodSearch. “By holiday shopping at GoodShop, we can help fill that gap by providing a simple and easy way for consumers to donate to their favorite cause while saving money with our coupons. The end result is more books for schools, research for cures, pets adopted, oceans cleaned and other important work accomplished by these non-profits.”

Out of EVERYTHING we write about and know about, there is almost nothing we know more about than being PREPPY.  Being preppy is a way of life, and the only way of life we'd recommend!  The vast majority of what we recommend falls into some area of prep, and we were just thrilled to see the latest from Rizzoli: PREPPY Cultivating Ivy Style  By Jeffrey Banks and Doria de La Chapelle Foreword by Lilly Pulitzer, One of Our Most Favorite Farmington Graduates!  On our wall in a pink and green grosgrain ribbon frame we have a photo of Peachy and Lilly.  You can see the school link under links we love: http://missporters.org/default.aspx and Peachy has worked with the admissions office since her freshman year of 1990-91 and as a volunteer since her graduation.  The best looks of prep we believe are those that it comes naturally to and we are not sure it is always possible to "cultivate" it, however, we did enjoy this book.  Also, on page ten they state something to the effect of "return to prep" and we believe if you are truly preppy, this look never left you.  We love how on page 37 they speak of Penny loafers...Peachy got hers in Manchester, Vermont at the Polo Store and her dad said if she did not make honor roll at MPS she would have to pay for them with her babysitting money...fortunately she did make honor roll and they still bear their original pennies and look brand new-testament to the quality of Ralph Lauren.  Parts of Preppy reminded us of days spent in Timco, which is the building that houses the archives of Miss Porter's...Gloria Galvert was the resident expert when we were there and she was simply fascinating when we participated in Archives.  Today, Peachy Deegan even wears a tweed blazer when she goes downtown to a club.  Of course, it is possible she might be the only one there dressed that way, but if not, at least fellow preps can identify her!  And you know we are superpatriotic, and what can be more American than Prep?  The photos in this book are just terrific, and the storyline complements them.  We loved the section on borrowing from the boys...if you are a true prep you will be enchanted with this book and we recommend it!

Rizzoli is delighted to announce the October 2011 publication of PREPPY: Cultivating Ivy Style. Designer Jeffrey Banks and journalist Doria de La Chapelle have compiled a fascinating look at the long and colorful history of prep style. Through smart text and glamorous images, PREPPY: Cultivating Ivy Style celebrates the origins, cultivators, and followers of preppy fashion and the lifestyle that defines the look. The book takes an historical approach to how the preppy look evolved, from its roots as the uniform of the American elite, to the all-inclusive style that resonates around the world today. With a foreword by preppy style guru Lilly Pulitzer, PREPPY: Cultivating Ivy Style explores all facets of men’s and women’s fashion, featuring many of the iconic elements: the oxford shirt, polos, Shetland sweaters, khakis, and the brightly colored madras and floral prints that have become synonymous with the look.

· The INTRODUCTION: A Preppy’s Progress, celebrates decades of preppy style from 1920s Hollywood legend Douglas Fairbanks to rapper Pharrell Williams.

· GOOD BREEDING GROUNDS traces the origins of preppy chic back to Ivy League universities in the 1920s when young men, seeking a more relaxed style, began pairing athletic gear with more traditional clothes. This chapter showcases the important role that elite sports such as golf, polo, squash, and tennis had in influencing this new way of dressing.

· PURVEYORS OF THE PRIVILEGED highlights the innovative men’s clothiers who marketed this new style of sportswear to a wider audience of men than just the Ivy League. From J. Press to Brooks Brothers—this chapter examines the labels that defined preppy style for men.

· BORROWING FROM THE BOYS explores how stylish women initially adopted menswear until a handful of labels gave them a colorful, feminine spin on preppy fashion.

· ASPIRATIONAL PREP explores the 1980s when, thanks to Ralph Lauren, The Preppy Handbook, and the Reagan–era financial boom, preppy became a branded, designer-driven, aspirational lifestyle.

· EVOLVED IVY showcases how preppy fashion has been reinvented and tweaked into a practical, chic, economical, and global way to dress.

· The INDEX lists the top purveyors of prep style in the United States and Europe.

PREPPY: Cultivating Ivy Style is an inspiration for the millions who adore this practical, cheerful, and fashionable approach to style.
