One of the finest foods in Manhattan is the bagel, and we don't write about it often enough.  That's because it's not everyday we find a bagel place as superb as Bagelworks, located at 1229 First Avenue between 66/67 streets.  Going strong since 1983, Bagelworks was started by Dina's and Ramsey's parents and this brother and sister team, along with another sister not pictured, do an absolutely phenomenal job at making bagels.  We cannot remember the last time we had one this good, and we live in Manhattan which is supposed to be land of the fantastic bagels.  If every corner had Bagelworks, it would be.
Peachy's favorite bagel is onion with scallion cream cheese (with all of the fat).  The soft bagel was chewy and delicious and the scallion cream cheese was the icing on the cake.  You have to personally go to Bagelworks to appreciate how outstanding the bagels are!
Here is the sliced salmon specialty by Bagelworks.  It is totally to-die-for and quintessentially New York.  Sliced Nova with Cream Cheese, Tomato, Red Onion and Capers will wow you.
The muffins at Bagelworks are also strong candidates for morning meals.  We prefer bagels as a category over muffins anywhere, but these muffins were terrific.  On the left is chocolate chip and on the right is blueberry.

If you're a health nut or planning on a big dinner and want to be more sensible at breakfast, Bagelworks has thought of that too and they offer the Nothin Muffin which is both fat free and sugar free.  It actually tastes pretty good despite missing Peachy's two good friends fat and sugar!  Nothin Muffins are available in blueberry, chocolate chip, lemon poppy and banana nut.
Bagelworks also offers some inventive cream cheese that you probably have not had anywhere else, and we say that since we've never seen on the left: GARLIC POPPY and on the right: JALEPENO CREAM CHEESE.  They could become habit-forming!  Both excellent in their own right.
If you are on a lunch break to Bagelworks, there are excellent sandwiches to choose from. Above is the chicken salad with fresh dill, and the freshness makes all the difference.  Every item we tried at Bagelworks screamed freshness and quality.  It also whispered "Eat Me" so maybe Alice in Wonderland will be popping over...
Finally, for lunch do not miss the Tuna Luna!  Open-faced vegetable tuna with swiss cheese is a tremendously fulfilling lunch.  Bagelworks is Terrific Takeout!
