The area of Cape Cod/Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard is one of the most beautiful in the country, especially in the summer. With stunning landscapes and awe-inspiring ocean views, it is truly a national treasure. And thanks to United By Design, published by Schiffer Publishing, readers are afforded a detailed look at more than 40 homes in this region. Many architects were considered for inclusion in the book, and ultimately, twelve were selected to have their homes featured. Author Loryn Wilson Schiffer, an architecture and interior design enthusiast, has done a marvelous job of capturing a wide variety of styles, sizes and designs. The chapters are divided by architect, with each firm having between two and seven houses featured. The houses range from ultra-modern to ultra-traditional, with just about everything in between! A biography of each architecture firm is included, and each house is described in detail, and floor plans, drawings, models, and site plans are also provided. It's truly a fascinating look at the behind-the-scenes work involved in creating these beautiful houses. A beautifully written foreword by architect and author John R. DaSilva provides a terrific introduction to the book; he incorporates his own experiences in the region with a bit of history, and lays the groundwork for what lies in the pages ahead. The book itself is truly a work of art; after reading it through in its entirety once, I found myself frequently flipping back through the pages, lingering on many of the breathtaking photos and imagining myself living in one of those gorgeous homes. They are all so different, so special, and yet they are unified by a theme of exciting, high-quality design (hence the title of the book!). Visually stimulating and very informative without being overwhelming, United By Design is a true delight from cover to cover. It would make a perfect gift for any architecture aficionado, as well as any lover of the Cape Cod area (that is, if you can resist the urge to keep it for yourself!). Highly recommended by this panelist!

The weather outside keeps getting warmer and warmer with each passing day. Soon the heat in the city will be unbearable. Many in New York will be looking to escape the heat and relax in their summer homes. Unfortunately, I won't be joining them. Someday I hope to have a summer home of my own, but until then, I will have to settle for the next best thing. United by Design, by Loryn Wilson Schiffer is a beautiful selection of homes in Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. If you don't yet have your own home in one of these locales, this book will invite you to view these gorgeous properties all from the comfort of your living room! The book goes into stunning detail about the design behind these homes. Any architecture buff will love this book. Much of the architecture blends classic New England elements with exciting modern designs. With the information in this book, you can start planning and designing your dream home. Borrow ideas from the most beautiful houses in New England. Whether or not your designs ever make it off the drawing board, it is still a lot of fun to imagine what your house might look like! The only thing this book wont help you with is deciding which location to choose. Each and every one will take your breath away!

Mansions, cottages and modern homes send us all into architectural spasms. When all of the houses are on the shore, or tucked neatly away in the woods of Cape Cod, summer homes create spaces that allow us to aspire and dream. Nooks, decks, and pergolas presented in tour de force photographic documentation serve as inspiration for any home. Details captured in color prove their long-lived possibilities. These are spaces that invite revisiting, as Schiffer has graciously grouped them all into a book about the master class. Additions, re-dos, complete with drawings, all part of the realm of possibilities fill the pages of "United by Design."  Twelve architects were chosen from a juried group. Their work is covered in this gorgeous volume and include a wide range of styles. With a bit of background, the book includes biographies of the architects and credits for designers who helped bring the homes to fruition. The "masterminds" served their clients well, and the resulting projects give pause to those who hope to build, or are in the process of creating their own special living environment. Edited by Loryn Wilson Schiffer, with a foreword by John R. DaSilva, the pages of beauteous buildings form the basic clue as to what can be done in any landscape. The fact that the area designated is Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket will bring the book home to many of the Northeast, and underline the fact that all "cottages" are not the same. In this artistically rich area of our country, where the sea, sun and the wind act as de facto inspiration, the homes herein depicted open themselves to us, and we can only imagine the welcome they provide to all that see them, inside and out.

Architecture and Interior Design are my passion and I love the shingle style homes of the NE islands and Cape Cod. “United by Design” an oversized, glossy book showcases some of the most elegantly designed homes in New England. Because of the oversized format, you are really able to see the details in the design both inside and out. Bigger really is better! What I really love is that the editor was able to find projects that are equally as well-designed by the architect and the interior designer. These homeowners understand a beautifully curated home from the bones of the house to the furniture and art. These homes are inspiring and present many different genres in design. No matter what your personal preference in design is, whether it be traditional, modern, transitional or eclectic this book covers it all. If you love good design then you will appreciate the range shown in this book so that you do not feel you are looking at the same thing page after page. Many people think of this area only have traditional shingle-style homes which play very well in this landscape on the water. However as you pour through the pages you see that not everyone chooses the same look for their interiors as they do for the exterior. Projects shown are from some of the most respected and award winning designers and architects. You get to see their thought process in the floor plans to challenges they face with the landscape to sketches that were then translated into incredible structures. So peer over the fence and get an inside look at some of the most fabulous homes!
