Washington Capitals to Sponsor USA Wounded Warriors in USA Hockey Sled Classic

The Washington Capitals announced today the sponsorship of the USA Wounded Warriors in the fourth annual USA Hockey Sled Classic presented by the National Hockey League.

The competition will take place at Robert Morris University Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh Nov. 21-24, with the Rockville, Md., USA Warriors ice hockey team representing the Washington Capitals.

The USA Hockey Sled Classic is an annual round-robin format tournament between NHL-affiliated teams. Established in 2010, it is the first competitive adult tournament of its kind.

The Capitals team is comprised of approximately 15 disabled army veterans, many of whom were patients at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, as well as two local disabled high school players.

Washington will begin the tournament in a B Division game against the New York Rangers on Friday, Nov. 22, followed by a contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets. On Saturday, Nov. 23, Washington will compete against the Buffalo Sabres, with semifinals and the championship game scheduled through Saturday, Nov. 23, and Sunday, Nov. 24.

The 2013 competition marks the second year a Capitals sponsored team is participating in the classic. The Capitals won all five of their contests in 2012, outscoring their opponents 36-3 while winning the B Division championship.

The USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization, working in partnership with theDisabled American Veterans (DAV), and offers sled and standing hockey programs to patients at Walter Reed and disabled veterans. Founded in 2008 the program currently has around 20 sled players and 30 standing players who practice and play games year-round as part of their rehabilitation.

“We are extremely grateful for the support given to the USA Warriors sled team by the Washington Capitals again this season, which enables the players to participate in the NHL Sled Classic,” said Dan Coleman, president of the USA Warriors Ice Hockey program. “Indeed, we are grateful for the support provided by the Caps to all the USA Warriors throughout the season.”

Each of the 16 competing teams are affiliated with NHL clubs – the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. Sled hockey teams will represent their affiliated NHL club by wearing official NHL licensed jerseys with local club marks and logos.

The event is part of the third annual Come Play Hockey Month, a joint effort of USA Hockey and the NHL. All tournament games will be streamed live at USAHockey.FASTHockey.com.
