History of Whom You Know: Whom You Know Celebrates Our Fifth Birthday with Mover and Shaker John-Claude Hallak and Hallak the Couture Cleaner, Official Dry Cleaner of Whom You Know! Top Five Tips For Keeping Your Clothes Clean in 2014 In Honor of Our Five Year Anniversary

by John-Claude Hallak

1. Don't get dressed until all body lotions, antiperspirants and other external skin applications have had time to soak into your skin and/or dry. While theses products may do wonders for your body, they are rarely friendly to clothing!

2. Remember when your mother would say "Stand up straight!” - well her advice can save your clothing. Leaning against almost anything opens you up to the possibility of "soil transfer". Everything from wet paint to soot & salt residue from the body of a car can make itself a new home in the fabric of your clothing. Is there anything in the NY Metro area (especially outdoors) that doesn’t have a subtle, or not so subtle, coating of dust and grime? Stand up - and be counted – as one of the cleaner New Yorkers!

3. Don’t eat meals while walking or driving. While we like to believe that we are capable of “walking and chewing gum at the same time”, combining these activities is dangerous not only to your wardrobe – but also to your health!

4. Don’t be too proud to protect your clothes when you are dining. You would be surprised at just how much collateral damage can occur with even the most civilized and refined table manners. Salads, pastas, soups and many more dishes have a way of sending small – but problematic – projectiles toward your clothes. Men, you might consider tucking that silk tie into the top couple of buttons of your shirt. And remember that a bib is not only for lobster. I recall dining at “La Caravelle” on 55th Street many years ago (man, I miss that place), and sitting at the banquette opposite us was a very stylish and sophisticated woman who pulled a fabulous silver lamé bib out of her purse and wore it throughout dinner! My wife and I still think about “Bibby” over 20 years later.

5. When tips 1 through 4 are not enough to protect you from a stain or spill, it is so important to clean your clothes in a timely manner. Whether a garment calls for professional dry cleaning or home washing, don’t let a stain sit in the fabric. The longer it does, the less likely that you will achieve 100% stain removal. A stitch in time …
