Today’s sale of 19th Century European Art brought $16,454,500, nearly reaching the pre-sale high estimate (est. $12.7/18.5 million). Leading the auction was Marie-François Firmin-Girard’s Le Quai aux Fleurs, whose price was driven to $3,021,000 by multiple determined bidders, reaching over six times its estimate (est. $300/500,000). This expansive, panoramic work propelled the artist to international fame upon its submission to the Salon of 1876. Le Quai aux Fleurs comes from the Collection of the late Ambassador, Charles S. Whitehouse and has not been on the market in recent memory.

Polly Sartori, Head of Department, 19th Century European Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture, noted, “The moment we saw the Firmin-Girard hanging on the consignor’s wall, we knew that it was a magical picture – the epitome of 19th Century art. We are thrilled to have achieved the world record price at auction for this artist when it soared above estimate, reaching over $3 million. We were equally pleased that multiple private collectors recognized the significance of the cover lot of our catalogue, a major Impressionist painting by Jean-François Raffaëlli, resulting in a price of $1.5 million, also above pre-sale estimate.”

The cover lot of the catalogue, Bonhomme venant de peindre sa barrière (Man Having Just Painted His Fence) by Raffaëlli, surpassed expectations, bringing $1,505,000, over its estimate of $700,000/1 million. This extraordinary image is one of the masterpieces of Raffaëlli’s career and comes from an Important Private American Collection.
