The Women’s Murder Club is not about a group of Miss Marple types sitting over cups of tea pondering the Vicar’s death by sword. Not that we don’t adore Miss Marple, and have done for decades now. But detectives change with the times, and this group gives us contemporary intelligent females to contend with the bad-doers of the world. It’s a brilliant group of professional women, all friends, in San Francisco, as conceived by James Patterson and in collaboration with Maxine Paetro. These women tend to be invalided with murder, either by their profession of choice (law, police), their dissection of crimes, or by dint of being the objects of (un)affection in the eyes of certain criminals. Time magazine calls James Patterson “the Man Who Can’t Miss”, and if you’re not yet a fan, get hooked quickly, as there’s lots to catch up with.  Always a twist and turn, mind-numbing conundrums of murder, and nefarious creatures whom you would never, ever want to meet in real life. The ladies of the Women’s Murder club solve it all, and I for one, am hooked on this series now. Mr. Patterson and Ms. Paetro combine forces and execute brilliance; the characters painted always ring especially true, that is to say, the good guys. The bad guys we can only hope to be the plotted darker side of humanity, not drawn from any reality. Little, Brown and company are the publishers of this, as with all of Mr. Patterson’s series.

I just got back from a trip to San Francisco so what a treat to read Patterson’s Novel “Unlucky 13”. Set within the Greater Bay area, Patterson reveals his latest novel in the Women’s Murder Club. I could really picture each character and how they related to the area and scenes within. As SFPD Detective Lindsay Boxer has moved into a new stage in her life as new mother, you see a different side to her. She has far more to lose, yet the same determination as before. As this is the 13th novel in the series, readers might think how could it continue to be as exciting. However, it has lost no steam. Full charge ahead with a unique plot written with a more feminine tone and narrative. This series was a brilliant way for Patterson to gain an even great female fan base. So dive into this book as you follow the chase for possible the most dangerous criminal they have faced yet. One who penetrated the SFPD inner circle gaining exclusive insight and knowledge of the system only to turn it against them in the most riveting and evil ways.

When you come across a book entitled Unlucky 13, you know you're in for a thriller of a book. And when you read that it is written by James Patterson, along with Maxine Paetro, that will make perfect sense! Truly the all-time master of the thriller genre, Mr. Patterson's books are always exciting, engaging, and full of unexpected twists and turns (even when you're looking for unexpected twists and turns)! Unlucky 13 is the thirteenth book in the Women's Murder Club series. The "women's murder club" consists of San Francisco Police Department detective Lindsay Boxer, crime desk reporter Cindy Thomas, medical examiner Claire Washburn, and district attorney Yuki Castellano. Their various careers have quite a bit of overlap, especially when it comes to solving murders, and the four friends meet regularly to chat about cases they're working on, as well as their personal lives. In Unlucky 13, Lindsay and her partner, Rich Conklin, are tasked with solving the case of the "belly bomber," who has been terrorizing a local fast-food chain with tiny explosive capsules packed into ground meat, which blow people up from the inside out when the acid from their stomach reacts with the explosive material in the capsules. Additionally, Lindsay is shocked to see a picture of a dangerous killer who had been presumed dead, Mackie Morales, cross her path. Mackie had interned with the San Francisco Police Department the previous summer, but it had turned out that she was secretly acquiring information for the mutual benefit of herself and her lover/mentor in crime, serial killer Randy Fish. Fish had been captured and killed, and Morales placed the blame squarely on Lindsay. If the picture was right and Morales was, indeed, free, then nobody, especially Lindsay, would be safe until she was re-captured. In a chilling and captivating subplot, Yuki and her boyfriend, Brady (who also happens to be Lindsay's boss!) surprise everyone by tying the knot and escaping on a honeymoon cruise, but their newlywed bliss is cut short when the cruise is taken over by pirates and turned into a hostage situation. With all of this going on, it's tough to imagine how the Women's Murder Club will find a way to solve each of the problems facing them, but if anyone is up to the challenge, they are! Engaging, exciting, and absolutely un-put-downable, Unlucky 13 is highly recommended by this panelist!

San Francisco Detective Lindsay Boxer is loving her life as a new mother. With an attentive husband, a job she loves, plus best friends who can talk about anything from sex to murder, things couldn't be better.

Then the FBI sends Lindsay a photo of a killer from her past, and her happy world is shattered. The picture captures a beautiful woman at a stoplight. But all Lindsay sees is the psychopath behind those seductive eyes: Mackie Morales, the most deranged and dangerous mind the Women's Murder Club has ever encountered.

In this pulse-racing, emotionally charged novel by James Patterson, the Women's Murder Club must find a killer—before she finds them first.
