Over 50 organizations in New York City have joined forces for a major effort to help New Yorkers quit smoking this spring. The citywide effort is called New York Kicks Butts Smoking Cessation Week. It will run from Tuesday May 31, which is World No Tobacco Day, through Monday June 6.

The goal of the campaign is to encourage all New York City smokers to quit smoking with the aid of qualified health care professionals and to learn about the tools and support available to assist them during this week and beyond.

“Some 900,000 adult New York City residents smoke,” said Michael Davoli, director of New York Metro government relations for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. “We want them all to be aware that they do not have to try to quit on their own. The efforts of all of these organizations combined will deliver the empowering message that help is available to all New Yorkers.”

During the week the participating organizations will encourage smokers to: Talk to their doctor or a health care professional about quitting; Explore the resources available to help New Yorkers quit smoking; Contact the NYC Quitline; and share their stories on social media using the hashtag #nykicksbutts. Activities are being planned across New York City during the week to provide help to those trying to quit.

The New York Kicks Butts Campaign chose today, March 16, to announce the smoking cessation week because March 16, 2016 is National Kick Butts Day. Kick Butts Day is a day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against tobacco at more than 1,000 events planned by independent organizers across the United States and around the world.

While Kick Butts Day encourages youth to not smoke, the New York Kicks Butts Smoking Cessation Week will be a week to promote not only smoking cessation but all of the many tools and resources available to help people quit smoking once and for all.

The 2016 New York Kicks Butts Smoking Cessation Campaign is a joint partnership among health care providers, non-and for-profit businesses, advocacy and community organizations, patient communities, religious institutions, governmental leaders and more.

Some of the planned activities during the New York Kicks Butts week include pastors, rabbis and imams speaking to their congregations from the pulpit, hospitals offering free community support sessions, businesses will be encouraging employees and patrons to quit, schools will be distributing information to parents and students, community leaders will be posting fliers, emailing their networks and hosting cessation programs, health care networks will be sending out an emails to all of their physicians providing them tips on how to speak to their patients about quitting and many other activities.

The New York Kicks Butts Campaign is seeking additional partners from the public and private sector. Details on the campaign and how to get involved can be found at www.nykicksbutts.org. All interested organizations should contact Michael Davoli at 1-212-237-3853 or michael.davoli@cancer.org
