Owner of Old Town Bar and Restaurant, Gerard Meagher and Peachy Deegan
Best chili in the world with a perfectly pulled pint of Guinness by Gerard himself:
"Old Town is a piece of Old New York that remains consistent to this day as a classic tavern of a bygone era.  What distinguishes us is that my family has been a New York family for about 200 years so we are a remnant of Old New York as well.  Old New York is character, style, and value in the sense that we pride ourselves to be appealing to the working man as well as the well-to-do.  Old Town is a stunning beauty."
-Gerard Meagher
It's nice to be important, as you can see from the acclaimed walls here, but it's more important to be nice and that is the exact atmosphere of friendliness and cheer you will discover at one of our most FAVORITE venues, Old Town Bar and restaurant.  Definitely check out the walls!
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we love knowing Gerard Meagher, esteemed Fordham grad.  We take #evertoexcel both seriously and literally: (you know who was a 4-year tour guide at another Jesuit school) and Gerard and his team have been pursuing excellence extending the illustrious history of their storied venue.
We were honored to be included in their 125th birthday party:

Old Town Bar and Restaurant was first featured in its initial review in 2014:
and it graduated to Peachy's Picks in 2015:
Their salads are extraordinary.  Fresh, traditionally creative and bursting with proven flavor, the Cobb Salad is a menu favorite.  Alfalfa is more than a little rascal here!  It joins the uber-popular ingredient of avocado and waltzes with olives, egg and bacon among the mixed greens.  They put the dressing on the side, as requested and this starter was terrific.  A lot of casual restaurants that are new and trendy have absolutely no idea what they are doing, but they think they do.  A lot of casual restaurants that think they are old school but are infants compared to Old Town do not have the intelligent leadership they need to thrive in the competitive Manhattan market.  Come here, absorb, and learn.  Though they make few changes to their menu, Old Town is one of an extremely short list of places that has proved to us that it doesn't need to.
All Tuna Melts are not created equally.
Some are just superior!
We could not get enough of the absolutely delicious Tuna Melt that hits the spot!  An extraordinarily flavorful tuna salad and cheddar graces the perfectly toasted Thomas's English muffin.
And it definitely is this brand; Peachy is an English muffin connoisseur and feels they are far underrepresented on menus.  We absolutely loved this open hot sandwich and can't WAIT to eat it again.
The cheeseburger is equally satisfying and it's notable to see that the Mayor's Choice refers to the great and super-missed Mayor Bloomberg, who loves these hamburgers.  As avid readers know, Peachy eats CHEESEburgers reminiscent of the style of the Cookie Monster, our inspiration.  Absolutely go for the Muenster, not only because it is south of Ireland.  100% beef will entice you along with FRESH french fries.  These are made fresh every day and you can tell!  We can see their competitors are far less committed to excellence in fries and these rule.
The Guinness is a perfect pint here!  We know as we've done extensive research drinking it in Ireland and Peachy's friend Gillian from UCC brought her to the Guinness factory in Dublin for further firsthand education.
 Drumroll please.
We just had to check.
Peachy Deegan did not even LIKE chili before she met Gerard.
We have met other chilis that were good and okay and satisfying, but if you want chili to ravish your tastebuds in all its flavorful splendor and completely rock your world, you get it here by Old Town.  The ratio of ingredients, the quality of ingredients and the overall fabulous taste that is super consistent makes us cheer!  It is obvious in every bite of everything that Old Town does not take shortcuts.  Not only do they serve fabulous food, but also they are in demand by the entertainment industry for being a film location.  It's no accident that the multiple-Emmy-Award-winning Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was filmed here: first and second season both.
The House Salad is a classic and a superlative companion to whatever you order.  Romaine, carrots, and red cabbage announce less is more and we adored their ranch put on the side for Ms. Pretty Picky.  A menu item relatively new is Gerard's mother's Potato Salad.  It is simply sensational with dill and red onion, and its pure homemade quality is a terrific hit.
Finally, Howard Johnson's eat your heart out!  (and we imagine that was great-see Jacques Pepin with Peachy on her know he revolutionized that menu.)  We mean that in the nicest way, and they were known for their fried clams.  Know what?  Gerard's are better!  Fried Clam Strips with Caper Tartar Sauce, in itself wonderful, are crisp and delectable.  They are the best in the city at Old Town. Pictures don't lie:
Old Town Bar and Restaurant by the Meagher family continues to be Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.
