Thomas Started with Jackie Kennedy and Now Has Worked On Another Ancient (Graduate of Miss Porter's School...) Bravo Thomas and John!

Thomas Morrissey who did the color, Peachy Deegan and owner John D'Orazio

Recently, Peachy Deegan visited the John D'Orazio salon to work with Thomas Morrissey on her haircolor!  His illustrious career is fascinating.  We love history and we love salon history!  Thomas Morrissey tells Whom You Know:
"I started out at Kenneth's, this goes back 30 years, and at the time I got out of beauty school at age 22 and I applied to six major New York City salons, including Kenneth's and I got two or three offers, including Sassoon.  At the time, Kenneth's was the salon in New York, at 19 East 54th Street.  It was a townhouse and it was decorated by Billy Baldwin, who was also a big deal, and very beautiful.

When I started there, it was Jackie Onassis and Marilyn Monroe and Pat Buckley.  I started at the top, and I was a colorist assistant and when I applied for the job, I told them that they didn't have to pay me.  So they ended up paying me $75 a week and after taxes it was $63 but I was living at home with my parents and I said fine!  So that was my foot in the door."

It's good to start at the top, and Thomas Morrissey did just that.  We were absolutely delighted to meet him recently along with John D'Orazio, owner of his namesake salon on Madison Avenue just above Ralph Lauren.  It was our first visit to this salon and our first time meeting and working with each of them, who respectively have achieved illustrious careers in hair.  All members of this salon, especially manager Mary, have phenomenally impressive manners and an outstanding welcoming manner, which put us at ease immediately.

It can be a frightful situation to work with a new colorist, but when we knew Thomas did Jackie's color, we knew that if he was great enough for her, he would be more than great enough for Peachy!  An added bonus was that we found out his 100% Irish ancestry is from Cork and you know who went to college and lived in Cork for a semester!

To achieve this stunning look, Thomas used three shades of Clairol light brown in a strategic color cocktail to make Peachy look natural, and for the foil highlights, a 20 volume L'Oreal peroxide in equal amounts of 3 oz color and 3 oz peroxide was carefully placed around Peachy's face and crown.  Peachy's worst nightmare is having red hair, and she still does not have red hair.  Thomas did amazing work, and the pictures speak for themselves.  Our goal was to have the silver covered and emerge radiant with blonde highlights.

"We're going to cover your grays with a single process: light brown with a little chestnut.  We have twelve different companies of color brands from L'Oreal to Clairol to Goldwell.   We do what makes sense for what the client wants, and we don't have any one loyalty to one brand," comments Thomas Morrissey, in color consultation before he began.

We like that!  They do what looks best on YOU and have no particular outside interest in color brand loyalty.  "It gives us a lot of flexibility, and if some client comes in and says I really like Goldwell or whatever, fine.  After we get rid of the gray and you get shampooed, we're going to do a sprinkle of new highlights," continued Thomas. Also, we enjoyed their coffee.
"In 1985, I opened Thomas Morrissey (see this piece we found in the Chicago Tribune that we'd encourage you to read) on 787 Madison Avenue near 66th/67th streets and we were there for 25 years.  And then the lease was up, the rent more than doubled and we couldn't afford it.  At the time I knew John D'Orazio socially and he had just opened this, and so we've been here for about five years and it's been great.  John had just opened it and we had room, so my whole staff joined this salon except for one hairdresser that wanted to freelance.  That was very important to me, that I was able to take my people because I didn't want anybody unemployed and it's worked out well."

Philosophically, it's all about a natural look in Thomas Morrissey's view.  "I'm not a big advocate of purple or pink or green hair.  I think haircolor should always be very natural.  It should look like it has grown out of that person's head.  It should blend in well with their skin, their lifestyle, all of that.  I'm not a big fan of extremes.  I like natural," says Thomas.  "I enjoy the positive transformative process and improving a color look and putting a smile on someone's face.   That's the fun part: when you take someone who's not very happy and make them happy.  I enjoy meeting different people and the relationship especially when you've been working with someone for years and years.  It's a nice thing to do, that interaction with clients is very rewarding and special."

"In my earlier career at Kenneth's, it was Jackie Onassis, Pat Buckley, Brooke Astor, Bunny Mellon, Colleen Dewhurst, Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, there really is quite a large list," continues Thomas Morrissey.  In the interest of privacy, he keeps quiet whom he works with today.  Except this one, who wants to tell you all about him:
