KB Home (NYSE: KBH) today announced that, for the eighth year in a row, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized the national homebuilder’s industry-leading efforts to construct water-efficient homes and its additional contributions to the WaterSense program by awarding it the 2018 WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award.

“Water conservation is essential for homebuilders, homeowners and the communities in the markets we serve,” said Jeff Mezger, KB Home chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Recognizing this, we were the first national builder to adopt WaterSense efficiency standards and we remain steadfast in our support of the important water saving goals of the WaterSense program.”

KB Home has installed more than 500,000 WaterSense labeled fixtures in its homes across the country and has built an industry-record number - over 14,000 - of WaterSense labeled and Water Smart-certified homes. The cumulative results of these efforts are significant: KB Home estimates that its homes conserve 1.4 billion gallons of water annually.

An industry pioneer in exploring and evaluating water-saving innovations, KB Home is currently collaborating with RESNET, EPA and the Natural Resources Defense Council to develop a national water-efficiency rating system, similar to the HERS® national rating system for energy efficiency, that is intended to provide a consistent standard for measuring and comparing homes’ water performance.

Since 2006, the WaterSense program and its partners have helped consumers save more than 2.7 trillion gallons of water, the equivalent of nearly 100 days of residential water usage for the entire U.S. In addition to water savings, WaterSense labeled products and homes have helped reduce the amount of energy needed to heat, pump, and treat water by 367 billion kilowatt hours—which is enough to power more than 34.1 million homes for a year—and save $63.8 billion in water and energy bills.

“Through innovation and commitment, our partners are helping to transform the marketplace for water-efficient, high-performing products and homes,” said Veronica Blette, WaterSense program manager. “The WaterSense Sustained Excellence, Partner of the Year, and Excellence Award winners are leading the charge to save water, energy, and money for future generations.”
