Calling all canines and mystery enthusiasts!  We are pleased to introduce you to David Rosenfelt, and his easy reading everyday style of writing that surely has wide appeal, but especially to those that like dogs.  We applaud this combination. For everyone that likes a little murder mystery, or a few, this book should be high on your list.

We do not know David and have never met him, and this is the first time he's been considered.  As far as we know, he writes it all himself and one big disappointment we have had with big name mystery writers is that they "farm" out their work to lesser writers and put their name on it, resulting in poor quality work.

You'll be introduced to the protagonist, Andy Carpenter, a sympathetic character who had to endure the tragedy of going to a college (NYU) without a football team and with sports teams called the Violets. (GO EAGLES!!!  Did you all see the wicked awesome Doug Flutie on Family Feud this past Sunday killing it?  Yes, that is him with Peachy in her Instagram profile picture in Heisman pose...thank you Mickey for your idea and Tracy for snapping it.)  It is sad when a school doesn't have a football team but we do absolutely love the Glucksman House at NYU and the fabulous Irish program, which excels in Fifth Avenue marching on March 17.  #EvertoExcel

A defense lawyer by trade, Andy is met with a Joey Gamble opportunity that coincides with a Truman doggie story.  Truman is a French Bulldog, and he is in quite a pickle; we won't reveal the circumstances which you will have to read quite a bit to comprehend.  Andy himself has a lovely golden retriever named Tara and a basset hound named Sebastian.  But before you get any Scooby Doo thoughts (we love Scooby), you should know that these dogs are mainly passive and like to eat and sleep like most living beings.  They are not active mystery seekers but rather provide an ambiance.  We particularly applaud the opening three Tara paragraphs on page 263.

Many mysteries are written from the perspective of the murder victim's family and solving the case through the police, but as this is the opposite, appropriate measures are taken and the thought process is interesting.  Andy is incredibly likable and has his meetings at a sports bar over beer and hamburgers. (Aren't you glad we didn't say green tea and veggie burgers?!?!?)  He's married to a cop, Laurie.

The venues Rosenfelt picks are accurate-fun fact-Peachy once lived pretty close to the Eliot Hotel in Boston.  The story unwinds at a good speed, and solidly soldiers along drawing you in, ultimately proving that yes, mysteries have gone to the dogs.  That is a positive!  And Truman lives happily ever after.

BARK OF NIGHT by David Rosenfelt opens with lawyer Andy Carpenter visitng his veterinarian, to make sure everything’s good with his golden retriever Tara. Things rarely go according to plan in Andy’s world, and the vet asks Andy to help him in the matter of Truman, a healthy French bulldog. Truman was dropped off days ago with instructions to be euthanized by a man everyone thought was his owner, but now the owner is nowhere to be found.

Andy is furious. Who would want to euthanize a perfectly healthy dog with no explanation? He is willing to whisk Truman away to the Tara Foundation, the dog-rescue organization which is Andy’s true passion. But that’s not all the vet tells Andy. Thanks to Truman’s chip, it’s discovered that the man requesting the euthanization wasn’t Truman’s owner at all . . . Truman's real owner has been murdered.

It’s now up to Andy – with help from his loyal sidekick Tara, Truman and the rest of the gang – to solve this case. In the latest in the popular Andy Carpenter mystery series, David Rosenfelt’s charmingly clever wit and love of dogs are back and better than ever.

Rosenfelt, a New Jersey native now living in Maine, is the author of twenty-nine previous novels, twenty of which have featured Andy Carpenter. After a long and successful career as the President of Marketing for Tri-Star Pictures, he began the Tara Foundation (the basis of Andy Carpenter’s foundation) to help find a home for sick or injured dogs. The foundation has rescued over 4000 dogs from shelters, experiences he relates in his non-fiction books Dogtripping and Lessons from Tara. www.davidrosenfelt.com
