#ReadThis #AMinutetoMidnight by #DavidBaldacci @davidbaldacci @GrandCentralPub

"That's what makes it a nightmare.  You won't realize he's a monster until it's too late." (p.52)

In 2020, books have a lot of entertainment competition, and on top of that, timespans are shortening with the smartphone addictions that have taken over the world.
It's time to put your computer and phone down (unless you are on whomyouknow.com which we want you to be on 24/7!) and redirect your attention to a deserving work of fiction that will regale you and jolt you out of your life: A Minute to Midnight.  We love a good story.

We like agent Atlee Pine; she reminds us of Carrie on Homeland and Lizzie on Blacklist and we love the excitement level they provide without actually having to go out into danger yourself!  (But for more on our gun lesson, click here.)  Atlee has quite the backstory which winds and unwinds during the story but we feel is not entirely resolved at the end so we are hoping for a sequel.  Atlee: "I'm not most people.  I'm an FBI agent.  I run toward the problem, not away."

This book is all southwest, then it is all southeast.  We wanted to know when they would get to New York.  Well, actually that is where Atlee started but we won't give too much away.  If you like The Irishman (the film.  We like both the film and the general noun) and The Sopranos (follow the most awesome Steven Schirripa here we loved seeing him in person on the Pyramid with Michael Strahan-and go back and rewatch all 6 seasons of the Sopranos) you are also going to love A Minute to Midnight.

The devil is in the details and Atlee is trying to solve a puzzle which is her forte in life.  However, she might be bogging down in the wrong details.  You never know...you have to follow all the leads and you will be entranced with her on her journey to her truth-really.  We're not saying that to sound ridiculous like many people do with that word choice.  Atlee is quite literally delving into her personal past: a main reason why she joined the FBI in the first place.  Her hypervigilance is key to her success and as the plot unwinds, you will see her sixth FBI sense evolve.  (For more on Vigilance read one of our most favorite books by Ray Kelly!  Obviously non-fiction!)

The character development throughout is intelligent and captivating; Baldacci excels at both major and minor characters and how they relate to each other, or not!

Two thumbs up for the Karl Lagerfeld mention, and all the cars however next time we would prefer a Corvette.  Finally, we were thrilled to see that on p. 223 a biography of Churchill was referenced generally and we wonder if it is this one specifically, which we just reviewed and loved.

This may be the only book we've published on this year, but it is also our most favorite of the year...we won't tell you about the discard pile.  Baldacci is obviously quite the talent and we also love that he does it by himself without co-writers watering it down.

A MINUTE TO MIDNIGHT is Recommended by Whom You Know!

FBI Agent Atlee Pine’s life was never the same after her twin sister Mercy was kidnapped—and likely killed—thirty years ago. After a lifetime of tortuous uncertainty, Atlee’s unresolved anger finally gets the better of her on the job, and she finds she must deal with the demons of her past if she wants to remain with the FBI.

In A MINUTE TO MIDNIGHT (Grand Central Publishing; November 19, 2019) Atlee and her assistant Carol Blum head back to Atlee’s rural hometown in Georgia to see what they can uncover about the traumatic night Mercy was taken and Pine was almost killed. But soon after Atlee begins her investigation, a local woman is found ritualistically murdered, her face covered with a wedding veil—and the first killing is quickly followed by a second bizarre murder.

Atlee is determined to continue her search for answers, but now she must also set her sights on finding a potential serial killer before another victim is claimed. But in a small town full of secrets—some of which could answer the questions that have plagued Atlee her entire life—digging deeper into the past could be more dangerous than she realizes…
