On restaurants without phones or who never answer their phone:

“I come at this issue as someone who is also a travel writer, where we must fact-check and keep things up to date, and I think a restaurant should always have a phone listed. It doesn’t have to be an old-fashioned landline, but say a dedicated cell phone, which could be for the restaurant itself or belong to the manager or owner. What if people need to ask last minute questions, make reservations beyond what they can do on the website or app, or importantly, ask questions about things like handicap accessibility, allergies, etc, which might not be well-answered on the website or Facebook or Instagram page. That said, I will say some famous restaurants which are notoriously difficult to go to – like Rao’s in New York, have a phone line, but as far as I can tell, just let you leave messages that they never respond to. Do I think maybe with a vowel at the end of my last name, I deserve a call back? Well, maybe. But I never got one. And I still have yet to dine at Rao’s.”

Note from the Editor: Peachy has never dined at Rao's either, and has no record of the owner being in touch.
