Second Feature @TavernonJane Since 1995 by #Founder and #Owner #MichaelStewart HAPPY THIRTY YEARS TO MICHAEL STEWART AND TAVERN ON JANE 31 Eighth Avenue at Jane Street of Course! #WestVillage #Manhattan!
Of course the green crayon in front is the harbinger of an excellent review.
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we are thrilled to tell you Michael Stewart, Founder and Owner of Tavern on Jane since 1995 has earned a second feature and Tavern on Jane is our favorite American tavern in the West Village right now! Open since October 5, 1995 (Mario Lemieux's birthday of course all NHL Peachy readers know..), Tavern on Jane boasts gorgeously All-American culinary endeavors. They are served upon perfectly crisp sixteen white tablecloths in the tables towards the back and two hightops in the front. Tavern on Jane seats 68 total. They make everything from scratch and picky Peachy even likes the music here. Of course, Michael, who has been the sole owner since January 2014, is genetically acclimated for being a Tavern proprietor as he is Scottish (Rod maybe you can come here with Mario and Peachy on October 5???), English and Irish. And obviously Peachy is genetically acclimated to be a Tavern patron as she is Irish, English and Welsh.
As avid readers know, we are huge advocates of salads and one of our newest culinary columns is Sensational Salad where the very best Peachy's Picks are highlighted with their talents in this category. Tavern on Jane lords over their local competition in both quality and quantity of salads. First, above meet Lillian's Cobb. Grilled chicken, gorgonzola, red peppers, tomato, egg, bacon and red onion strike a pose in perfectly-fashioned stripes ready to greet you in their vivid nutritional prowess. Below, meet Kale Cranberry, which sings a perfect song of fall with of course dried cranberries, kale, almonds and superior grana padano. Normally this comes with lemon vinaigrette and all salads normally come dressed, but Peachy asked that they come not dressed because she likes to apply the salad dressing, and Green Goddess is the most commanding choice in all cases says our palate. Tavern on Jane put the Green Goddess in cute little silver boats on the side in ideal fashion.
Maybe if the Boston College football team was eating the Roasted Beet Salad emblazoned with winning maroon and gold beets they would be having a winning season this year! They are a culinary triumph with the arugula, red onions, and perfect orange segments without a single string of white. White Balsamic normally comes to this salad party but as we previously alluded to, Peachy love love loves Green Goddess by Tavern on Jane, made from scratch. If you want a bite on the lighter side, opt for the Grilled Portabello Mushroom with ripe beefsteak tomato sliced wonderfully and rejoicing with amazing mozzarella. It totally hits the spot on brioche and if you don't eat meat or fish, this has your name all over it and will surely impress you.
Cod is delivered fresh to Tavern on Jane three times a week we are told to emerge golden ready to cannonball into house-made tartar sauce with coleslaw and hand-cut fries. It's among the best fish and chips we have had this year, and equally convincing is the French Onion Soup! An ideal combination of beef and chicken stock along with the superstar Spanish onions team up for a warm hug in your stomach to wow you on a brisk fall day, and normally a Blue Cheese crostini rests on top. You know who does not care for Blue Cheese, so they put a special crostini for Peachy and the whole production dances underneath a generous creamy layer of simply sensational Gruyere Cheese.
Pictures are never edited. You win like Michael, or we do not publish.
Tavern on Jane earned an Inaugural Review in 2024, and again especially with their carnivorous feats they have proven they are in it to win it. We are extremely huge fans of the cheeseburger as a menu item, and if you are too you are in for a treat here. Eight burger choices await you and we absolutely have further burger ambitions. We opted for the Creekstone 28-day Dry Age and it was perfectly medium rare as we ordered, as was the Grilled Hanger Steak below. We chose for Pepperjack cheese to go with the burger. Matchstick potatoes joined spinach and Guinness-braised onion aioli to-die-for graced us with their presence on the burger, as well as the unique fried brussels sprouts with bacon which are aside.
The Grilled Hanger Steak is still our favorite menu item and teamed up with amazing creamed spinach and steak fries, its juicy succulence wowed us tremendously. Don't miss the skylight in the back, a hidden treasure!
Tavern on Jane continues to impress and we hope they keep up the excellent work!
