A Project, promoted by the Pancrazio Foundation
In recent years, changes in children’s eating habits and lifestyles have led to a worrying increase in overweight and nutritional deficiencies. A simple diet plan is often not enough. To address this educational and social emergency, the “5 Colors” Project was launched in 2021 by the Pancrazio Foundation, with the goal of promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles. The project focuses on schools as privileged places for learning and on families as everyday points of reference.
The initiative is based on playful learning, featuring five positive superheroes – the DI5 – who gain special powers by eating fruits and vegetables. The five colors of well-being (orange, purple, white, red, and green) become a fun and motivating way for children to discover and enjoy healthy foods.
In addition to encouraging the consumption of fruits and vegetables, 5 Colors spreads the principles of the Mediterranean Diet, which was ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2025 as the best diet in the world among 38 dietary patterns analyzed. Despite its scientifically proven benefits, adherence to the Mediterranean model remains low. For this reason, the project starts with children — to reach families and entire communities.
The “5 Colors” Project is now arriving in the United States for the first time, bringing the values of the Mediterranean Diet to schools belonging to the Italian Educational System Abroad (SFIM). With the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, which has long promoted Made in Italy and a food culture that combines quality, health, and sustainability, the project blends education, creativity, and entertainment.
Through an animated series produced in collaboration with Warner Bros/Discovery and a traveling educational kit, children explore fruits and vegetables, the five senses, and the symbolic gesture of the “high five” — a universal sign of unity, sharing, and mutual respect.
As part of the international tour, the “Di5 – Create Your Story” Contest invites children around the world to invent a story featuring the Super Five, which could become an official episode of the Di5 animated series aired on Frisbee Channel.
The U.S. tour includes key stops and public events supported by the Consulate General of Italy in New York and CONI – Italian National Olympic Committee, U.S. Delegation:November 14: Official Presentation at the Consulate General of Italy in New York, with Italian institutions and international partners.
November 16: Five Colors Festival in Central Park, a public event dedicated to the Mediterranean Diet, conviviality, and the value of togetherness.
November 17: Cooking Show at Eataly Flatiron New York, celebrating Italian creativity, tradition, and food culture.
November 19: Closing event at the Embassy of Italy in Washington, with educational activities for schools and an in-depth look at the cultural, educational, and health values of the Mediterranean Diet.
This initiative integrates Italy’s school-based educational experience with international public events, reinforcing the Foundation’s mission: to educate children worldwide about healthy, mindful living through the Mediterranean Diet, imagination, and the universal values of friendship, solidarity, and respect.
The project also announced a partnership with the Campagna Amica Foundation, which has long supported initiatives that teach young people the culture of healthy food and the value of living together.
The contribution of ICE – the Italian Trade Agency
The Italian Trade Agency (ICE), a public body that promotes the internationalization of Italian companies and supports the growth and competitiveness of Made in Italy worldwide, will also contribute to the project, helping create synergies between the Foundation and Italian businesses abroad.
Statements
“Promoting Made in Italy means spreading around the world not only our products but also our cultural identity, made of quality, tradition, and innovation. The Five Colors project perfectly embodies this spirit and our ability to combine education, sustainability, and internationalization,”
said Antonio Tajani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
“Through the Five Colors project, we will promote the principles of the Mediterranean Diet here in the United States — a way to bring the American public, starting with the youngest, closer to our lifestyle, culture, and the excellence of our agri-food sector,”
underlined Marco Peronaci, Ambassador of Italy to the United States.
“Initiatives like this best represent Italy and its values,” said Fabrizio Di Michele, Consul General of Italy in New York.
“New York is certainly the U.S. city most familiar with the Mediterranean Diet and Italian culinary traditions, yet the need for stronger food education, especially among young people, is still deeply felt.”
“With Campagna Amica, we have always guided children and young people on a journey to discover food, nature, and the joy of being together, helping them recognize that good nutrition is an act of care for themselves and for others,”
said Dominga Cotarella, President of the Campagna Amica Foundation.
“Prevention must start early to avoid problems later in life. The Five Colors project is particularly valuable because it takes place in key contexts such as schools and families, educating children to make healthy and conscious food choices”
emphasized Giuseppe Morino, Scientific Director of the Pancrazio Foundation.
“When we started, only a few schools were involved. Today there are more than seven hundred,” concluded Maria Teresa Carpino, creator of the Five Colors project and President of the Pancrazio Foundation.
“Seeing children learn the value of food and sharing is our greatest reward. Together with them, we also involve families, creating a parallel and successful journey that combines education, health, and conviviality. They are the future — and it is from them that we want to keep starting again.”
A FUN-FILLED DAY OF SPORTS, WELLNESS, AND OUTDOOR FUN FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES.
