What you need in your life now
Time to wake up, Manhattan.
It's Monday.
BUT, it's LESS of a Monday when you have great coffee and a RASPBERRY YAM TURNOVER, smiling at you above, which we don't believe we've ever had and never knew we needed in our life, and it was so spectacular it even eclipsed the chocolate performers here which is rare.
Dan Bakery opened on Thursday, August 6, 2026 on the Upper East Side at 1431 York Avenue between East 75th and 76th and the founders and owners are wife and husband team Anar Kozhabayev and Arman Kozhabayev, who both came to the USA in 2018 from Kazakhstan. In the Kazakh language, Dan means Seed, hence the name.
If you like chocolate too, you have options here and the best places always give you lots of options. The dark chocolate muffin, the chocolate croissant and the nutella chocolate chip cookie all satisfy a sweet tooth and are solid performers.
It's a good sign when a casual venue has a chandelier, but shouldn't everyone have a chandelier on the Upper East Side?
What we liked best were the egg bites, and we would like to see them concentrate on much more in the realm of eggs (real eggs from chickens, not fake eggs or egg whites) and we would like to see much bigger egg sandwiches and especially with cheeses we love like munster, burrata, and basically everything from Ireland, England and Italy and especially Lioni here. What we saw was a great start and they are fantastic for being LESS THAN A MONTH OLD. Peachy must really like them if she is featuring them THIS SOON!
The raspberry yam turnover was the superstar here. They make their own jam from scratch and we are told its freshness is less than a week from its birth to your plate, like all the best places do. All items are crafted in New Jersey every morning and delivered here before you wake up, presumably!
The jam is really what makes this great and we believe they could even sell it if they wanted to.
They also have New Jersey locations that precede this Manhattan one.
The croissant options extend to raspberry and classic:
The red velvet cookie also hits the spot, and all of this sweetness is only the beginning.
Fermented rice coloring gives this cookie its hue; everything here is natural. It's super clean and nothing is artificial; go see for yourself and discover one of the 18 indoor seats.
We are impressed and we look forward to seeing what they do next.
