#GraciousGalleries #StarrArt RINGO STARR TO SHOWCASE HIS ORIGINAL PAINTINGS FOR THE FIRST TIME AT ANIMAZING GALLERY IN LAS VEGAS - "STARR ART" EXHIBITION AND SALE MARKS RINGO'S FIRST ART SHOW SINCE 2019

100 Percent of Artist Proceeds to Benefit Ringo's Charity The Lotus Foundation, Animazing Gallery To Host Private Reception For The Artist and Collectors

Animazing Gallery in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas announced plans today to showcase the artwork of Ringo Starr, coinciding with the Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band residency at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. Curated by Neal Glaser of ArtCelebs, the "STARR ART" exhibition and sale will run from September 5 to October 15. It is Ringo's first art show since 2019 and the very first time that he will present his original paintings in addition to limited edition and signed works of art. 100 percent of artist proceeds will benefit Ringo's charity, the Lotus Foundation.

Ringo began painting using acrylics and oils, creating paintings for many years before he decided to start composing art on his computer in the late 90s. Since his first exhibition of his paintings in 2005, which he titled "My Faces," Ringo's artwork has continued to evolve, seeing him experiment with different mediums and techniques. This latest collection features his Spin Art, the process of which organically unfolded as all of Ringo's art and music does.

"I loved Spin Art the first time I saw it," Ringo recalls. "I saw a video of some kids doing it and I thought I'm going to try that. I started with a small canvas and now I'm working on huge ones. You know it is always a surprise what you end up with and of course I love that part of it -one of the great surprises has been that I started putting canvases around the room to capture the overflow and whatever paint the spinning threw off – and those became their own art."

Starr's work is in the "Pop Art" tradition, and has been compared to Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, given his colorful and bright images and the use of everyday imagery. It is playful, whimsical, imbued with his trademark humor and often with messages of peace and love.

STARR ART will be open to the public, and the gallery will host a private event with the artist exclusively for collectors who purchase his art at the gallery prior to the event. More details to be announced soon.

Ringo is collected worldwide and has had exhibitions of his art in Europe, South America, Australia, and the United States. As always, 100% of his proceeds go to support the Lotus Foundation.

For more information about STARR ART visit www.animazing.com or Instagram@animazinggallery or call (702) 785-0061.

Leica Gallery Debuts Powerful New Exhibition and Launches the Inaugural Leica Libretto Book Series

Leica Gallery presents 8 Days in Napoli, a raw, unflinching new exhibition featuring never-before-seen work made exclusively for Leica by legendary Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden, Sept. 25 – Nov. 2, 2025. This body of work also marks the debut of the Leica Libretto book series, an initiative by Leica USA that celebrates influential photographic voices through focused storytelling.

In this series, Gilden brings his signature approach, intimate, flash-lit, and emotionally direct, to the streets of Naples, Italy. Shot in just eight days, it's an immersive experience that strips away pretense and places viewers face to face with the humanity of Gilden's subjects.

"These revelatory portraits of random Neapolitans, gathered in a brief eight-day stay in the historic city, attest to the fact that Gilden's 'edge' remains finely honed, revealing an artist who persists in recording the 'whole truth' of his subject," says Max Blagg, poet, writer and performer, in the book's introduction.

Gilden's unmistakable style, direct and unapologetically real, reflects his lifelong mission to photograph life as it is. His portraits do more than document; they confront, confess, and honor the spirit of the street.

"Witnessing his connection to the people of the city gave me an appreciation for the way he captures unfiltered humanity," said Mike Giannattasio, President of Leica USA, who traveled with Gilden for this shoot. "This body of work is a testament to Bruce's vision and Leica's commitment to supporting photographers who tell stories with honesty and courage."

"This exhibition not only underscores Bruce Gilden's enduring vision," adds Leica Gallery Director Michael Foley, "but also exemplifies Leica's ongoing commitment to authentic photographic storytelling."

Coinciding with the exhibition is the release of 8 Days in Napoli, the first edition in the Leica Libretto series. These compact, collectible books will spotlight a single photographic project, making iconic work accessible to both collectors and new audiences. Gilden's, decades-long relationship with Leica aligns with the brand's core values of precision, artistry, and storytelling rooted in real life.

Leica USA is proud to launch the first episode of its original content series, In Conversation With, underscoring the company's ongoing commitment to engaging with the artist community. The premiere features a one-on-one interview between renowned artist Bruce Gilden and author Max Blagg, offering a candid exchange of ideas and insights. The video will go live on the Leica Camera USA YouTube channel on September 10th.

As part of the exhibition program, Leica Gallery will host an opening reception Sept. 25, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, welcoming guests to experience 8 Days in Napoli. The following evening, Sept. 26 at 6:30 PM, the gallery will present a special in-conversation event featuring Gilden and Blagg, followed by a book signing. Leica New York and Gilden will also host Be Yourself: A Masterclass with Bruce Gilden, Sept. 22–26, 2025, in which Gilden will guide participants in developing their own street photography style, teaching them to photograph confidently and unobtrusively in any environment.

These events underscore Leica's dedication to fostering authentic photographic voices and bringing their work to both collectors and new audiences worldwide.

#GraciousGalleries Heather James Fine Art Presents 10 Paintings by Sir Winston Churchill in a New Exhibition

Heather James Fine Art presents a selection of 10 paintings by Winston Churchill. Originating from a single-family owner, the artworks are from the largest private collection of Churchill's paintings outside of the United Kingdom, and have never been exhibited publicly. The general public knows less of Churchill as a painter than as one of the world's greatest statesmen and Nobel Prize winning writer. His paintings played a critical role in his life, offering another way to understand this towering figure.

On the Rance Near St. Malo - At the Tate Museum’s request, Churchill offered it to them in 1955 for acquisition, along with Loup River, as a "gift to the nation”. Loup River was selected and On the Rance ended up lost in a storeroom at the Tate, where it remained undiscovered for nearly a half century.

"Heather James is thrilled to present this superb selection of paintings by Winston Churchill," says Heather James Fine Art Co-Founder Jim Carona. "Not only was Churchill one of the greatest statesmen of the modern era, but his personal foray into painting showcased his inner workings with resulting artworks that are technically adept and aesthetically beautiful. These works read like pages out of his diary, mementos of the moments and places that were meaningful to one of the most important men of his day. We at Heather James have had the honor of working closely with Churchill's family and his oeuvre in the past and consider his works a specialty of ours. It is a joy to be able to share these phenomenal examples."

Winston Churchill: Making Art, Making History, an exhibition celebrating Churchill and his paintings at Heather James, asks us to contemplate the role of painting in his kaleidoscopic life.

The ten paintings offered by Heather James range from bold landscapes, a vibrant still life, and a quiet interior portrait. It was the Impressionist influence and his own pleasure that most likely made landscapes the genre of choice for Churchill. Painting en plein air was a hallmark for the Impressionists and so too did Churchill haul his paints and canvas outdoors and into nature. Looking at a landscape painting by Churchill is like reading a page of his diary. Given the many demands on his time and his accomplishments both as a politician and as a writer, the quality and productivity of his artistic output is difficult to fathom.

The ten works for sale from this collection include a number of superb examples both of Churchill's skill as a painter and the interesting stories behind the man and the paintings:

On the Rance Near St. Malo
At the Tate Museum's request, Churchill offered it to them in 1955 for acquisition, along with Loup River, as a "gift to the nation". Loup River was selected and On the Rance ended up lost in a storeroom at the Tate, where it remained undiscovered for nearly a half century.

The Bay of Eze
Painted close to the home of Churchill's lifelong friend and cousin by marriage, Consuelo Balsan née Vanderbilt, a Gilded Age American socialite.

Oranges and Lemons
Churchill painted this work in January 1958 at La Pausa, once the home of Coco Chanel. At the time it was owned by Churchill's literary agent, Emery Reves, and his wife, Wendy. Ms. Reves later donated a portion of her Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection to the Dallas Museum of Art, including works by Cezanne, who Churchill cited as an inspiration.

View of Loch Choire
Churchill painted this in 1919 while staying with his friend, the Duke of Sutherland, at Dunrobin Castle in Scotland, just a few years after he started painting at age 40. He returned to Dunrobin Castle in 1921 to recover shortly after losing his daughter Marigold, aged nearly 4. This was the second devastating death that year, as he also lost his American mother, Jennie Cornwallis-West.

Winston Churchill and his paintings are an area of expertise for Heather James. In 2018, Heather James Fine Art was proud to present an exhibition of ten of Winston Churchill's paintings.

For nearly 30 years, Heather James Fine Art has expanded into a global network with galleries located in Palm Desert, California, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, along with consultancies in New York City, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Montecito, Newport Beach, Palm Beach, Basel in Switzerland, and Lake Como in Italy. Each year, its galleries present an array of museum-quality exhibitions exploring historical and contemporary themes or examining the work of individual influential artists.

Heather James Fine Art is dedicated to bringing exceptional art to private clients and museums globally while providing the utmost personalized logistical, curatorial, and financial services.

Povey has worked tirelessly in his studio in Devon, England, for 20 months to complete 12 canvases for the show. "The artist displays extraordinary skill to create complex figurative paintings, heavy with symbolism and human experience", Waterhouse says, and adds that "Povey characterises his style as Emotional Realism, an apt description given the highly detailed depiction of the figures and the intense emotion they convey".

The experiences Povey endured as the child of a violent seaman gave him insights that still imbue his art with a soulful potency. Waterhouse continues "He allows us to share his forceful awareness of the beauty and vulnerability of life, and the strength of the human spirit".

Edward Povey was born in 1951 in London, England, growing up as an only child, painting obsessively and writing prose and music. He studied drawing and then psychology and painting. He first became well known as a mural painter and the BBC filmed him making 25 large scale murals.

Smithsonian American Art Museum Receives $2 Million From the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation To Advance American Art Scholarship

Completes $10 Million Campaign Supporting the World’s Oldest and Largest Fellowship Program for American Art

The Smithsonian American Art Museum today announced a $2 million gift from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation that culminates a major campaign to support the museum’s fellowship program, considered the preeminent program for American art scholarship since being founded in 1970. The gift will establish an endowment to support the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Fellowship in modern and contemporary art and the professional development of fellows at the museum. It is the largest single gift to the campaign and the largest gift ever to the museum’s fellowship program.

The fellowship program is part of the museum’s Research and Scholars Center, dedicated to advancing new scholarship by providing emerging and established scholars with financial support, publication guidance, unparalleled research resources and access to a network of colleagues at the Smithsonian and experts across the field.

To mark the 50th anniversary of its fellowship program in 2020, the museum embarked on a fundraising and awareness campaign to strengthen the program’s future and impact. Other recent contributions to the campaign include gifts from the Wyeth Foundation for American Art to establish, in partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art for five academic years (2024–2029), and a gift from the artist Audrey Flack to establish the Audrey Flack Short-Term Fellowship, which will contribute to greater equity in the field by supporting researchers whose personal circumstances preclude them from participating in longer-term residencies. Together with support from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, these gifts complete the $10 million goal of the SAAM Fellowship Program 50th Anniversary Campaign.

“Thanks to the deep generosity of supporters like the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, the excellence of SAAM’s exceptional fellowship program and its longstanding role in catalyzing innovative research and new perspectives is strengthened for generations,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The first Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Fellowship will be awarded for the 2024–2025 academic year. Applications will open in September and are due by Nov. 1. Information about how to apply will be available on the museum’s website or via email.

Artnet Introduces Art Secured Lending Brokerage Program Through Partnership with Luxury Asset Capital

Global fine art platform’s service offerings include buying, selling, researching, and now borrowing against the value of fine art

Artnet, the leading platform for art market data and media, and the global online fine art marketplace, and Luxury Asset Capital, a leader in the alternative financing market, today announced a specialty financial services partnership that enables Artnet’s clients to quickly access capital without having to sell fine art or other luxury assets by using them as loan collateral held by Luxury Asset Capital. Artnet’s Art Secured Lending Brokerage program enables Artnet’s subscribers to obtain access to capital by leveraging their fine art assets, as well as other luxury assets, including watches, jewelry, gemstones, and autos.

Artnet is the trusted source of art market information, transparency, analysis, and online auctions to over 2.1 million monthly users from over 239 countries and territories. Luxury Asset Capital is the nation’s largest privately-held provider of non-bank loans that use borrowers’ luxury assets, such as fine art, as collateral, with over a billion dollars of loans to tens of thousands of clients.

Through the partnership, Artnet clients can initiate the loan process through an inquiry on Artnet’s website, which will typically include the pertinent information from the Artnet Price Database used by Luxury Asset Capital’s art asset underwriters to quote an initial loan amount to the prospective borrower. Upon acceptance of the initial quote, arrangements are made for inspection of the work and its supporting documentation, resulting in the generation of a final quote for a loan amount between $25,000 and $5 million. Art used as loan collateral is fully insured and held at a secure Luxury Asset Capital storage facility. Funds can be wired immediately upon agreement of loan terms, and owners can redeem their collateral – fine art or other luxury goods – at any time by paying off the loan principal plus service fees incurred. In addition to fine art and other auction-quality assets, Artnet clients can obtain loans using a wide variety of luxury assets, including luxury and classic cars, luxury watches, fine jewelry and diamonds, gold and silver, and designer handbags and accessories.

“Artnet is a natural destination for fine art focused Financial Services, and the introduction of Lending Brokerage is core to our vision of providing a holistic online ecosystem for the global art market” said Albert Neuendorf, Artnet’s Chief Strategy Officer.

“As the leading provider of loans that use borrowers’ luxury assets as collateral, we are naturally drawn to working with leaders in the various asset classes we lend against,” said Dewey Burke, CEO of Luxury Asset Capital. “There is no more significant partner in the fine art community than Artnet, and we look forward to expanding our relationships in the fine art community through this innovative partnership.”

“Luxury Asset Capital has long served the fine art community with liquidity solutions that provide an alternative to selling,” said Chloe Kilburn, Luxury Asset Capital Vice President of Fine Art. “We are honored to integrate our services with the Artnet Price Database and look forward to expanding our relationship with Artnet and the Artnet community.”

#GraciousGalleries #LegalPeachy German Artist Michael Moebius Secures Historic $120 Million Copyright Victory, Setting New Standard for Intellectual Property Protection

Renowned German artist Michael Moebius has achieved a monumental legal victory, winning an unprecedented $120 million copyright judgment against 399 separate companies guilty of infringing on the artist's copyrights. The judgment, now officially closed for appeal per federal statute, is final and sets a new benchmark for the protection of intellectual property rights in the art world.

Marilyn Monroe Bubblegum and Audrey Hepburn Bubblegum Copyright Michael Moebius

Created in 2012 through a meticulous painting process, Moebius's enchanting bubblegum portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn have launched him into the stratosphere of contemporary pop art. These iconic creations have adorned the covers of globally esteemed publications such as Robb Report, amplifying their recognition. Despite this meteoric success, these pieces have become some of the most infringed artworks in existence, surfacing in unauthorized reproductions from bustling street markets across the globe to the digital expanses of the internet, echoing the omnipresence of world-renowned luxury brands.

In an environment where prestigious luxury houses like Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Dior grapple with rampant infringement, Moebius's distinctive works have experienced similar challenges. This parallel not only accentuates the global allure and high demand for Moebius's creations but also underscores the landmark significance of this court case in safeguarding the sanctity of original artwork and intellectual property.

The case, initially filed under seal and later made public (Case Number 1:22-CV-06079), was handled by Whitewood Law PLLC and resulted in a momentous $120 million judgment, the largest ever awarded to a living independent artist. It underscores the immense value of creators' rights and sets a precedent for future legal battles, demonstrating that artists can successfully recover damages exceeding the costs of litigation, an unprecedented achievement in modern intellectual property rights.

Moebius, alongside Kevin Esfandi and their legal team, remain committed to resolutely pursuing all infringers. This historic judgment marks a significant milestone in the fight for artistic rights and the protection of invaluable creative works, ensuring the protection and respect of artists' intellectual property rights.

#RoyalPeachy #GraciousGalleries ASHTON-DRAKE GALLERIES COMMEMORATES LEGACY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II WITH LIFELIKE PORTRAIT

On the eve of the Coronation of England's newest monarch, Ashton-Drake announces an incredible commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II with the introduction of Her Majesty, The Queen.

Bringing legends to life by creating highly detailed, true-to-life portrait dolls, Ashton-Drake introduces Her Majesty The Queen, capturing the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II when she ascended the throne February 6, 1952. Standing at a magnificent 15" tall and cast in fine artist's resin, this masterwork reflects unparalleled artistry and meticulous attention to detail on every piece worn on the night of her accession. Her lifelike brunette hair features soft curls. Her blue eyes add depth to her realistic appearance, and are intricately hand painted to highlight her regal, but kind features. The satin evening dress is a recreation of her Norman Hartnell gown, custom made, and tailor fit to feature the true-to-life floral pattern on her dress using hand painted watercolor techniques. The breathtaking detail on the back of her gown features an asymmetrical removable bustle that waterfalls down her skirt. She dons scale renditions of her sparkling faux gem crown, tear drop earrings, necklace, bracelets, and a sash with accompanying hand painted brooches to perfectly replicate their historical significance.

To capture the incredible likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, the creation of Her Majesty The Queen was inspired from revered portraits taken by royal photographer, Dorothy Wilding on the night she ascended the throne. Ocean House Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Ludwig Bemelmans with the Debut of the Bemelmans Gallery and Bemelmans Suite, Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of His Birth

The new Bemelmans Gallery is the largest permanent, private collection of work by Ludwig Bemelmans on public display in North America

Ocean House pays homage to the beloved illustrator and author Ludwig Bemelmans on the 125th anniversary of his April 27, 1898, birthday with the announcement of the Bemelmans Gallery and Bemelmans Suite.

The curated Gallery collection, owned by the historic hotel's proprietors Charles and Deborah Royce, includes original works, architectural commissions, illustrations of product campaigns, and illustrations of the beloved Madeline series. It is the largest permanent, private collection of work by Bemelmans on public display in North America, and showcases select pieces which have never been seen by the public before. The Gallery also features detailed didactics to bring meaning to various pieces in the collection.

The Bemelmans Suite, a crowning jewel of the Bemelmans story and connection to Ocean House, will be unveiled this May and will include ephemera, and images reflective of Bemelmans' life and legacy, allowing history and trivia afficionados to enjoy the follies and background of the celebrated artist and writer.

"Ludwig Bemelmans was an iconic, prolific, and witty artist and writer who continues to appeal to people of all ages," said Deborah Goodrich Royce. "Many of his works portray all levels of society with humorous 'behind-the-scenes' glimpses of hotel and café life. Naturally these playful pieces fit perfectly into our hotel setting. We are thrilled to share his storied legacy with our valued guests and visitors through this new Gallery and the Bemelmans Suite at Ocean House."

Additional Bemelmans milestone offerings and amenities include the 2023 re-release of To the One I Love Best, a witty and charming account of the wildly entertaining Elsie de Wolfe in the 1950s; and the recent re-release of Bemelmans' Hotel Splendide, which includes a cover quote from the late Anthony Bourdain affectionately referring to Bemelmans as "the original bad boy of the New York hotel scene."

Published by Pushkin Press and distributed by Penguin Random House, Hotel Splendide features autobiographical accounts of backstairs folly and more. In conjunction with the newly released Bemelmans' classics, copies of the books will be in Ocean House's guest rooms, and US readers have an opportunity to win a copy of each book plus a luxury stay in the Ocean House Bemelmans Suite for two. Details can be found here: https://bit.ly/BemelmansSS

Bemelmans Gallery Highlights

"Farewell to the Ritz" (aka Adieu to the Old Ritz series) - These 21 story-telling drawings recount Bemelmans' personal experiences from life at the Ritz in New York, including employee mentors, his taste for music, and his eventual own car as he became assistant banquet manager. When the hotel closed its doors in 1951, Bemelmans wrote and illustrated his now famous, "Farewell to the Ritz" in commemoration. It was this collection that sparked the Royce's interest in Bemelmans work, when it was on display in a window at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC.

La Colombe Murals – Bemelmans created these murals for the beloved La Colombe bistro in Paris, which he purchased in 1953. His Fresco mural paintings were done with wet lime plaster, where he re-created life at the Ritz on the walls of his bistro. After La Columbe closed, the murals were removed and stored in a barn outside of Paris. Fortune turned again for the art of Bemelmans when Charles and Deborah Royce flew to Paris, assuring the current owners that they would be lovingly restored and enjoyed by guests from around the world.

Madeline – Illustrations in the Gallery follow the 12 young schoolgirls as they stroll the streets of Paris. Bemelmans captures the city's parks, gardens and L 'Arc de Triumph in "One Nice Morning," and a depiction of young Madeline perched on a Seine River bridge from his book, "Madeline and The Bad Hat." Also in the Gallery are two tall Madeline paintings, original pieces from the 15 panels Bemelmans created for the children's dining room aboard Aristotle Onassis' yacht "Christina O."

About Ludwig Bemelmans

Ludwig Bemelmans left a lasting impact on modern day culture and children's literature with his whimsical and witty style. Although he was most widely known for his Madeline series, he was a notable artist and relentless "connoisseur of life," and he drew with a child's eye and wrote with the wit of an adult. What few people know is Bemelmans deep connection to hospitality and travel. He was born into a hotel family and began his career in the industry, arriving in New York from his homeland of Austria at 16 and landing a job as a busboy at the Ritz Hotel in New York. He went on to become a banquet manager there, and his drawings and books offer a candid glimpse of the lives of individuals in the hospitality business and experiences in travel and dining. His legend lives on in hospitality through notable establishments like Bemelmans Bar in New York, and now Ocean House in Rhode Island.

About Ocean House

Located on the scenic Atlantic coast in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, Ocean House was originally built in 1868, attracting distinguished guests. The grand Victorian hotel was a beach resort where generations of families and guests from American came 'to summer.' It closed in 2003 when it was deemed beyond repair and in 2004 the concept of a new structure replicating the original exterior design was conceived. In 2010, it reopened after a $140M historic rebuild and it features 49 guestrooms, 20 suites, and private cottage residences available for rent. Today, Ocean House is a year-round destination, one of only 14 Forbes Five-Star hotels in the world, and a member of Relais & Chateaux.

In January, at the 40th Annual Caritas Dei Bishop's Gala, The Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of the Diocese of Palm Beach, awarded Borynack the with the distinctive Bishop's Charity Medal. The award was in recognition of Borynack's lifetime of charitable outreach, including his long-standing commitment to supporting the work of Catholic Charities, and has only been awarded once before.

In February, at the Lighthouse Guild's 'Visionary Evening' Dinner Dance, Borynack was awarded The Lighthouse Guild's Visionary Award, recognizing his philanthropic vision and community spirit.

Lastly, at the 32nd Annual Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award Dinner in March, Borynack was presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award, the highest accolade bestowed by the Town of Palm Beach United Way, recognizing unparalleled leadership in philanthropy. Town of Palm Beach United Way's Board Chairman, Bill Tiefel, commented "Jimmy Borynack represents the very best in our society, bringing talent, expertise, originality, friendship and empathy to every business endeavor, non-profit position and community role he undertakes. Indeed, throughout the Palm Beach season, Borynack and his partner Adolfo Zaralegui (Findlay Galleries' President) made significant contributions of time and treasury to several organizations.

In 2022/2023, Borynack and Zaralegui hosted several pre-gala cocktail receptions for the Catholic Charities Diocese of Palm Beach, the Palm Beach Symphony, the Lighthouse Guild, Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, the Center of Creative Education, and the Town of Palm Beach United Way's Red Feather Society. They also hosted individual receptions and dinners on their renowned terrace for major donors of the Four Arts' "Americans in Paris" Dinner Dance and for the donors of the Cleveland Museum of Art. As a special tribute to the Friends of the Uffizi, they hosted a cocktail reception on their terrace for that organization's regional members.

In step with its leadership, Findlay Galleries is committed to supporting recognized regional and national charities in Palm Beach and New York on an ongoing basis. As such, the gallery's exciting and engaging charitable events schedule for the 2023-24 season promises to bring the utmost support and awareness to the needs of those less fortunate and the charitable programs that support those in our community that need it most.

#GraciousGalleries CHRISTOPHER BISHOP FINE ART AND MASTER DRAWINGS NEW YORK ANNOUNCE NEW LEADERSHIP

Christopher Bishop Fine Art announces the purchase of Master Drawings New York (MDNY), the premiere art fair for exhibiting exceptional works on paper, established in 2006. The annual fair, presented in more than two dozen galleries on the Upper East Side during the month of January, draws an international audience of art collectors, curators, scholars, students, artists, gallerists, and museum visitors. A former advisory board member and Old Masters expert, Christopher Bishop will step into the leadership role of President of Master Drawings New York on March 20. Cydney W. Williams (Associate Director, Christopher Bishop Fine Art) is being named Director of Master Drawings New York.

As a participant in Master Drawings for 10 years, Christopher Bishop Fine Art underscores a commitment to the founding mission of the fair, which is to provide a central space in New York for the sale, study, and appreciation of works on paper from all periods. Bishop’s Madison Avenue gallery specializes in drawings and paintings from the 15th through early 20th centuries. With more than 20 years of experience in Old Master drawings and an increasing presence in modern and contemporary works on paper, Bishop will leverage his position in New York to infuse the fair with new vitality.

“Master Drawings serves as a platform for an unmatched gathering of the minds. The fair uniquely provides an opportunity for discovery and the passing on of intergenerational knowledge,” said Bishop. “We will build upon this legacy—fostering the strengths of the show while taking it to the next level in the years to come.”

Founded 17 years ago by London-based art dealers Crispian Riley-Smith and Margot Gordon, Master Drawings New York has a history of highlighting the integral role of drawings in the creative process. In addition to showcasing galleries on or near Madison Avenue, the event traditionally includes associated programming at institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt, and The Frick Collection.

“I am delighted Christopher Bishop has procured Master Drawings New York and am confident that he will look after our community in New York and beyond. While the fair began as an exhibition of Old Master and early modern drawings, the event has grown to include paintings and sculpture celebrating the works of master artists,” said Riley-Smith. “Since its founding 17 years ago, I have been running Master drawings from the UK—with the support of a great New York-based advisory team—it has been one of the highlights of my professional life. Now it is time for this marquee New York event to benefit from New York-based leadership. Chris is the best person to step up, and I will fully support him through the imminent transition. The Master Drawings exhibitors, collaborating partners, and participants are in excellent hands.”

“I extend my gratitude to Crispian Riley-Smith for his stewardship of this institution, and I am honored to be chosen as the best candidate to help carry Master Drawings New York forward. Art dealing is a career, certainly, but also a vocation. We believe strongly in passing on what one has received through kindness from patrons, mentors, colleagues, and friends. As we all know, in this business an arts education continues until our final day and that, truly, is the fundamental pleasure of the field,” noted Bishop.

-

NEW MDNY ADVISORY BOARD
An advisory board comprised of former and new board members has been assembled to support CBFA in fulfilling the Master Drawings New York mission. The executive committee of the new advisory board will include Stephen Ongpin (Stephen Ongpin Fine Art), Cliff Schorer (Agnews Works on Paper), Jill Newhouse (Jill Newhouse Gallery), and Alan Salz (Didier Aaron).

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DRAWING FOUNDATION
Christopher Bishop Fine Art is equally proud to announce a new partnership between MDNY and The Drawing Foundation, a New York based not-for-profit organization founded by Allison Wucher, Owner, Silverpoint Fine Art, and Simon Levenson, Founder, Drawing America, that is due to launch this summer. The Drawing Foundation is dedicated to hosting and promoting drawings-related events, scholarship, and study and will have a key role in helping to develop and foster the institutional partnership events traditionally associated with Master Drawings New York.

“We are excited and honored to be working with Master Drawings New York under its new ownership. The week of Master Drawings New York has always represented an important opportunity for our community of dealers, curators, scholars, collectors and enthusiasts to come together and celebrate drawings. We look forward to orchestrating the institutional partnerships and events that contribute to an exciting and vibrant fair,” Allison Wucher, co-founder of The Drawing Foundation.

Christopher Bishop Fine Art has pledged one third of the gross revenue of Master Drawings New York to The Drawing Foundation on an ongoing annual basis for a minimum of five years.

“This new corporate and affiliated non-profit structure will help to insure the stability and longevity of these institutions. It is our hope that in the future we may have the honor of passing on this institution to a new generation as well. At this time, it is appropriate to look backwards in gratitude, but also forward with a knowledge that together we can preserve the legacy for the future and build on this foundation for the next generation,” Bishop said.

“Museums, dealers, collectors, and historians alike are all equally invested in making sure the joy of the study of drawings is passed on to new generations, so it can grow to new heights,” Bishop added. “This can only be done by knitting the community together ever more strongly and reaching out to bring new audiences to the fair.”

Part of Kettle's winning body of work responds to the theme of the oceans and our collective need to protect them, created especially for her presentation with Candida Stevens Gallery at the 19th edition of Collect, the leading international fair for contemporary craft and design, taking place at Somerset House until 5 March, 2023 and online with Artsy.net until 12 March, 2023.

Internationally renowned for being a pioneer of her art form, Kettle uses a unique embroidery technique on the sewing machine, incorporating expressive lines to create a sense of movement, describing figures and evoking their own sense of place in the world. Her work has been held in numerous international public collections for decades, including the Crafts Council – a major public asset which holds over 1,700 objects acquired from the 1970s onwards including a 1988 piece by Kettle.

As part of the prize, three of Kettle's new pieces will enter the Crafts Council's national collection as an acquisition gift from Brookfield Properties, and she will also receive curatorial and production support to stage a solo exhibition with a more extensive collection of her works across two of Brookfield Properties' sites in the heart of the City of London which will open to the public this summer.

The artist was selected as the award winner by the curatorial teams at Crafts Council and Brookfield Properties. Her work won from a shortlist of five nominated artists, which included ceramicist Amy Hughes (Cynthia Corbett Gallery), material-led artist Anne-Laure Cano (155A Gallery), ceramic sculptor Noa Chernichovsky (Charles Burnand Gallery) and multi-disciplinary artist Samuel Nnorom (Gallerie REVEL).

Alice Kettle, Winner of 2023 Brookfield Properties Craft Award

"Craft is so important, it is about the deep understanding of the material that captivates, provokes and conveys experience, and inherently connects and transforms lives. Working in craft is life changing and I am proud to champion all forms of making."

Saff Williams, Curatorial Director, Brookfield Properties

"It is special to celebrate Alice Kettle with the 2023 Award, an artist whose career has spanned four decades, who has continuously pushed the boundaries of textile art with her thoughtful embroidered works which use medium of thread and action of tension, to embody notions of the human condition and connection to nature. This year we celebrate an artist committed to her practice and an ever-changing narrative, which we strongly believe will create two stunning summer shows for the public."

John Stobart, World Renowned Maritime Artist, Passes at 93

It is with great sadness that Rehs Contemporary Galleries, Inc. announces the passing of John Stobart, one of the world's most renowned maritime artists, on March 2nd, 2023. He was 93 years old.

John Stobart is widely celebrated for his breathtaking depictions of historic maritime scenes both at sea and important port cities. His works can be found in the collections of museums, corporations, and private collectors around the world.

Born in Leicester, England, John was surrounded by the beautiful countryside and developed an early appreciation for the landscape… he always considered himself a landscape painter at heart. But at the age of 8, a visit to his grandmother's home in the north allowed him an excursion to the port of Liverpool - at the time, the busiest port in England. This sparked his lifelong desire to capture the excitement of world trade that comes to life in a port. Stobart would go on to study at the Derby College of Art and the Royal Academy in London, where he developed his skills in composition and perspective.

After that first exposure to a busy port, John's passion for the sea and ships grew, leading him to pursue a career in maritime art. Shortly after completing his service in the Royal Air Force, John received a gift from his father; a ticket to board a ship destined for Cape Town, South Africa – his first ocean voyage. The adventure provided the young artist with a detailed understanding of how ships and ports function on a daily basis. Around this time, Stobart first had the idea that British shipping companies might be interested in paintings of their ships in exotic port cities… not only was he right, but this idea laid the foundation for Stobart's entire body of work.

By the early 1960s, shipping companies weren't just buying his paintings, but commissioning works and sponsoring his travel overseas. If you ever had the chance to speak with John, he would likely tell you his "life was a series of miracles." One of the most notable of these miracles happened early in his career… on a train ride from Toronto to New York City, Stobart unknowingly befriended Donald Holden, the editor of American Artist Magazine. That unlikely meeting would lead him to Kennedy Galleries, which would host Stobart's first solo exhibition in 1967.

Stobart became known for his meticulous attention to detail and incredible ability to capture the atmosphere and mood of historic ports. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the best in his field and was soon exhibiting his paintings in galleries throughout North America and Europe. In 1970, Stobart emigrated to the United States and settled in the coastal town of Darien, Connecticut. Later, while the family lived in the Washington, D.C. area, he established the Atlantic Gallery near his Georgetown studio - the first of five galleries. He continued to produce stunning works that captured the imagination of collectors and enthusiasts alike. His compositions include views of iconic locations such as Boston Harbor, New York Harbor, San Francisco Bay, Pittsburgh, Hilton Head, Venice, London, Bermuda, Cape Town and many others; his paintings are not just works of art but also historical records of a bygone era.

While Stobart enjoyed making his ships and structures historically precise, he could not hold back his deep love for friends and family. Throughout his oeuvre, Stobart consistently renamed dinghies and port-side shops after those who meant the most to him. Several of his later works are also fondly known for their inclusion of a well-hidden wine bottle. John would routinely tell the tale of the time his son, Bill, exclaimed that a supposedly completed painting was, in fact, incomplete as his father forgot the bottle! John had not realized Bill was paying such close attention, but it became their little game from then on. Thought these details are subtle, they are incredibly meaningful and a testament to the kind of person John Stobart was.

In 1978, John played a pivotal role as one of the founding members and Vice President of the esteemed American Society of Marine Arts (ASMA), a distinguished organization that is dedicated to acknowledging, fostering, and advancing the field of marine art and maritime history. Through its various initiatives, ASMA aims to promote collaboration and open dialogue among artists, art teachers, art students, publishers, and other individuals engaged in creative pursuits that pertain to marine art and the rich history surrounding it.

Over the course of his career, Stobart received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the art world; among them was his election to the prestigious National Academy of Design in New York and the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1979. During the 1990s, the government of Bermuda acknowledged him with the Order of Merit for his impact on the island's maritime heritage. In 1997, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Marine Maritime Academy, and the American Society of Marine Artists presented him with the Award of Excellence, the society's highest honor. In 2008, he returned home to Derby, U.K., where he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Derby, which had subsumed the Derby College of Art years earlier.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Stobart was a generous philanthropist. He established the Stobart Foundation to support recently graduated artists, particularly those influenced by the history and tradition of the plein-air painters, in their transition to becoming professional artists. Stobart recognized, from personal experience, that this time is crucial in an artist's development. His goal was to offer an environment of support and provide financial assistance at a time when the artist's energies and resources were at their lowest point. Despite his overwhelming success, John remained humble and approachable and was widely admired for his generosity.

John Stobart's legacy will live on through his paintings, which will continue to inspire artists and captivate audiences for generations to come, as well as through the works of the Stobart Foundation recipients.

John Stobart is survived by his wife Anne, whose devotion to the man and his career was unbounded, his three children, Diana Wild, Elizabeth Stobart, and Bill Stobart from his first wife Kay Stobart; his son-in-law Fred Wild, daughter-in-law Sherry Stobart, three grandchildren Sam, Lilly and Zoe, and three great grandchildren Layana, Lucas, and Reggie. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless people around the world who admired his work and were touched by his kindness.

A private memorial service will be held for family members. Donations in Stobart's memory may be made to The Stobart Foundation.
