#Daylight #PeachyandtheCity @StPatsParadeNYC #KeepingIrelandonTop #IrelandPeachy #StPatricksDay #Parade #NewYork #Manhattan #Saturday #March162024 #FifthAve

Their website tells us:

The New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade™ is the oldest and largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the world. The first parade was held on March 17, 1762 — fourteen years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The parade is held annually on March 17th at precisely 11:00 AM in honor of St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland and of the Archdiocese of New York. The parade route goes up Fifth Avenue beginning at East 44th Street and ending at East 79th Street. Approximately 150,000 people march in the parade which draws about 2 million spectators.

From its earliest days, right up to the present, the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade™ has been run entirely by volunteers, many of whom come from generations of families dedicated to the organization of the parade. It takes months of preparation and countless hours to run the world’s oldest and largest parade. We could not do it without the commitment of these great women and men.

The NYC Saint Patrick’s Day Parade™ is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

*When March 17 falls on a Sunday, the Parade is held on March 16 for religious observances.

History
The NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of New York City’s greatest traditions. The first parade was on March 17, 1762 — fourteen years before the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. The first NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade was comprised of a band of homesick, Irish ex-patriots and Irish military members serving with the British Army stationed in the colonies in New York. This was a time when the wearing of green was a sign of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland. In that 1762 parade, participants reveled in the freedom to speak Irish, wear green, sing Irish songs and play the pipes to Irish tunes that were meaningful to the Irish immigrants of that time.

Today, the NYC Parade marches up 5th Avenue and is reviewed from the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York. Since it began, this tradition of marching past St. Patrick’s Cathedral has remained unchanged with the exception of the address. In the early years, the Parade would march past the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral (now Basilica) located at the corner of Mott and Prince Streets in SoHo.

Today, the Parade starts at 44th Street and 5th Avenue at 11am and proceeds up the avenue to 79th Street. Throughout the day along the Parade route, millions of spectators come to celebrate.

For the first few years, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade was organized by military units. However, after the War of 1812, Irish fraternal and beneficial societies took over the duties of hosting and sponsoring the event. Around 1851 the “Irish” 69th Regiment began to lead the marchers. Also at that time, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) became the official sponsor of the Parade as the individual societies merged under a single Grand Marshal. Today the 69th Regiment is still the first group to lead the Parade up 5th Avenue. They are followed by various Irish societies of NYC, the 32 Irish county societies, schools, colleges, Emerald societies and Irish language and nationalist societies. In the early 1990’s, the Parade was attacked for its traditional values and, in the resulting law suits, the organizer’s rights were upheld at the US Supreme Court level.

In 1992, the National AOH directed all AOH organizations to form separate corporations to run events such as the Parade. The NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade today is run under a separate corporation, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Inc.

In 2002, NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade was dedicated to the “Heroes of 9/11 honoring the police, fire and other rescue workers. At midday the entire Parade stretching one and half miles paused for two minutes. The marchers turned to face south towards the “Twin Towers” as Edward Cardinal Egan said a prayer for the victims of 9/11. It is said that was the first time in history that one could hear a pin drop on 5th Avenue. That year’s Parade was the largest to date with an estimated 300,000 marchers and three million spectators lining 5th Avenue. It was also the first time in the Parade’s history that the President of Ireland (Mary Mc Aleese) reviewed the Parade.

In 2011, the Parade celebrated its 250th anniversary with the world-renowned author Mary Higgins Clark as its Grand Marshal.

Five years later, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade has much to celebrate and for which to be thankful. This year is the Ireland 2016 Centenary Year. Senator George Mitchell is the Grand Marshal. And the Parade is scheduled to have about 200,000 people marching up the avenue.

#IrelandPeachy #PierceBrosnan @PierceBrosnan @TourismIreland Actor Pierce Brosnan stars in new video showcasing Ireland

One of Hollywood's most famous leading men is starring in a new video highlighting all things beautiful about Ireland’s landscapes and culture. It’s the result of Tourism Ireland teaming up with the Irish Film and Television Academy to create a series of short videos to showcase the beauty of Ireland.

The newly released first video features Pierce Brosnan, who speaks passionately about his love for Ireland and, in particular, for County Kerry and his hometown of Navan in County Meath.
The former James Bond star opens aptly with, “What’s not to love about Ireland? This tiny island has shown the greatest gift of poetry and storytelling”.

He goes on to wax lyrical about his love for his native land, speaking over stunning shots of Ross Castle in County Meath, the Kerry coastline, its main town Dingle, the famous Ring of Kerry, the mountainous Reeks District and the much loved Skellig Islands lying off the coast, which featured in the Star Wars movie franchise.

The Hollywood star adds: “What do I miss about Ireland? It’s the people. The sheer stamina and life force of Irish people from this great, beautiful landscape”.

“I’m a Navan man, County Meath. I left Ireland when I was a boy, I was 11. So, over these many decades now going back there’s always something great to discover”. His heartfelt message is also accompanied by images and clips of Ireland's traditional music and dancing”.

The video is part of Tourism Ireland’s #FillYourHeartWithIreland (#FYHWI) online campaign designed to share inspirational content about the island of Ireland with its millions of fans and followers on social media. Rolling out at a time when international visitors cannot travel, the aim is to keep Ireland ‘top of mind’ internationally and ensure the country is in the best possible shape to welcome back visitors, when the time is right.

Director of Markets for Tourism Ireland, Síobhan McManamy said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to work with the Irish Film and Television Academy, and with Academy member Pierce Brosnan, to create this fantastic video.” She added that the video will be seen around the world and that this will hopefully encourage people to visit Ireland in the future.

Áine Moriarty, Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Film and Television Academy said: “Ireland has given so much to international film: our wonderful actors, filmmakers and spectacular filming locations. The Academy is proud to help showcase our beautiful country to the world”.

#ReadThis #KnittingPeachy #FashionAlert #AliceStarmore #AranKnitting Highly Recommended by #WhomYouKnow @ManhattanPeachy New and Expanded Edition

There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those that are Irish and those that wish they were!
St. Patrick's Day is in 36 days and parade or no parade (if no parade we are having our own ESPECIALLY since there wasn't one last year) it's time to start looking Irish, which is fashionable 365 days a year.  Celtic Cables never go out of style, and Alice Starmore (Scottish) is a legend in knitwear design.

Not only is this a work of intricate patterns clearly laid out for the reader in an approachable manner, but also it details the history or lack thereof of the Aran Sweater, a fashion staple.  Everyone should have at least a dozen.  And, when you knit it yourself you can get exactly what you want!  We love Starmore's straightforward commentary and tell-it-like-it-is nature!  Retail is not what it used to be sadly, but really is there anything better than bespoke?!?!!!!

Starmore pays homage to geometry and symmetry, both signature traits of classic beauty throughout the ages.  She has her own designs included that are also timeless but were created by her and belong to her!  The patterns enclosed are incredible and we can guarantee that you cannot find them online.  We looked.  You NEED this book.  If you can read, you can knit.

We liked how part four addressed the historical impact of fashion and we hold fashion in high regard as an art form; every year since 2009 in May except last year of course because no one went because it couldn't happen, we have gone to the press preview at The Met for The Costume Institute and Peachy Deegan even interviewed Anna Wintour in person in 2009 and 2010.  These Aran designs belong in every worthy museum and shown here they are in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.  (When she was a student at UCC Peachy visited this museum and met an entire class of 9 year old boys from Finglas.  She sent them Oreos and they wanted to know how she "talked like that." Obviously Peachy has an American accent from Connecticut because that is where her Irish ancestors settled.  If you are one of those boys we want to know what happened to you we have your letters back still!)

Our favorite is page 158 St. Brigid!

Learn something new.  Escape the drudgery of this era.  Take a Trip to Ireland's Aran Islands with a Scottish knitwear designer.  Long live the Celtics!  Boston included.

Aran Knitting by Alice Starmore is Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.

The definitive guide to designing and knitting in the Irish Aran tradition, this highly sought after book returns to print after a decade's absence in a revised and expanded version. The author of many knitting classics, Alice Starmore is internationally renowned as a knitwear designer and an expert on knitting technique. In this guide, she presents a fascinating history of Aran knitting and an analysis of the traditional style, in addition to a complete workshop in technique, pattern, and design.
"Highly recommended" by Library Journal, this volume offers step-by-step instructions, photographs, and drawings. It provides complete directions and charted patterns for the original edition's fourteen designs — many of them reknit in contemporary yarns — plus a new design. Patterns include the St. Brigid, one of the author's most popular hand-knitted designs, which represents a step forward from Aran knitting into the realm of Celtic design. Brilliant color photographs depict all of the finished caps, sweaters, and shawls. Sixty easy-to-read charted patterns guide readers through the design process and encourage the development of unique patterns. Beginners and experienced knitters alike will cherish this comprehensive guide to a beloved craft.

Expanded and updated version of the Interweave Press, Loveland, Colorado, 1997 edition.

4 Questions with Alice Starmore: An Exclusive Dover Interview

Alice Starmore has a fascinating tale to tell. We spoke to the author of the #1 crafts bestseller Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting about her knitting background, professional start, and more.

Clearly, knitting is a deeply ingrained facet of the culture of Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Did your mother teach you to knit?
My mother taught me to knit when I was very young. She was a dressmaker as well as a knitter and our house was a place of constant creativity. I was also born at a time when most women knitted as a matter of course, and I had three aunts who had been fisher girls in their youth and were experts at making traditional fishermen's gansies.

I understand that your first language is Gaelic — do you still speak it?
Yes I still speak Gaelic. The Isle of Lewis, where I live, is in the Outer Hebrides — the heartland of Gaelic and the only place where you will hear the language in everyday use.

How did you get your start professionally?
I designed a small collection of knitwear in 1975 and successfully sold it in London boutiques. It was featured in a national newspaper and from that small beginning my knitting career evolved in ways that were quite unimaginable to me when I began.

Your books are known and loved around the world, and you've adapted design elements from the textile arts of many countries into your repertoire. Are you still discovering "new" aspects of knitting and fabric arts from other cultures?
I am interested in everything. I find inspiration in all aspects of the world around me. There is enough inspiration in the natural world on my doorstep to last many lifetimes. I am also inspired by art, culture, history, science and music. My own culture features widely in my design work but I have always been interested in other cultures and in other places. My main problem is that I cannot possibly live long enough to produce work from the amount of ideas that come into my head.

KEEPING IRELAND ON TOP: WHOM YOU KNOW CELEBRATES IRISH STYLE INTELLIGENCE AND EXCELLENCE with the Highly Recommended z4631 Ladies Side Zip Coat in Wine, by West End Knitwear Since 1957 #BravetheCold #FASHIONALERT

Highly Recommended z4631 Ladies Side Zip Coat in Wine, by West End Knitwear

Molly Cullen, Founder of West End Knitwear

Irish Girls Rule.
(But if you're reading us, you probably already know that.)
That's a fact and when Peachy Deegan's Aunt & Godmother (same person) visited her at UCC in County Cork when she was a student, she later followed up with a T-shirt that said IRISH GIRLS RULE which we wear under our West End Knitwear...her mother was Peachy's grandmother who's pictured below, and who was 110% Irish American with all four grandparents born in Ireland and settled Bristol, Connecticut, land of ESPN 100 years earlier.
Peachy and her Grammy on her 1st St. Patrick's Day, learning how important being Irish is!

Every day is St. Patrick's Day and a day to wear something fabulous crafted for you in Ireland.
Looking great is a 365 day a year goal.
Molly rules and we did not have the chance to know her, but we DO KNOW her two sons, Paul and John Cullen and Paul's sons, Barry and Niall Cullen, all current owners of West End Knitwear, which is Keeping Ireland on Top. So, whether you are Irish or just wish you were, you can achieve a stunning Irish look with West End Knitwear, made in Ireland.

Here's another fact.
IT'S A BLIZZARD IN THE NORTHEAST.
Not only is it necessary to be gorgeous, but it is also necessary to be WARM.  Be warm in style: utilizing knit patterns traditional to Aran and Celtic design and layering in a modern shape with an angular zip style – this side zip coat is both unique and beautiful.  Knit in soft merino wool at a mill in County Kildare Ireland, you’ll stay warm and cozy when the weather gets chilly, and today chilly is an absolute understatement.

Its illustrious history includes the village of Monasterevin in the county of Kildare, Ireland.  It is the home of West End Knitwear Ltd. The company was originally established by Molly Cullen in 1957, after creating beautiful Aran designs with her mother and grandmother for many years. Molly’s dream was to incorporate a family knitting business whose heritage stretched back for over 100 years. Molly is the granddaughter of Kate O’Shea, who, in 1856, was the first craftswoman in Ireland to commercially market her robust, hand knitted woollens. Molly Cullen recognized a market for fashionable Aran style knitwear and established West End Knitwear Ltd in her home village of Monasterevin.

Proud to keep the tradition alive, West End Knitwear Ltd was continued by Molly’s sons Paul and John Cullen who saw the opportunity to incorporate the best traditional aspects of their mother’s Aran sweaters into modern and fashionable styles. These new styles would come to recognize as the benchmark for modern Aran cable knit sweaters.
Early days of West End Knitwear Ltd in the 1960's

Today it is the biggest knitwear manufacturer in Ireland, with a vibrant workforce under Molly’s grandsons Niall and Barry Cullen. As the designers and producers of the finest quality Irish Aran Knitwear, the extensive range uses the traditional Irish Aran Stitches throughout these garments which are believed to bring luck, success and health to the wearer, ensuring we keep our long-treasured history of traditional Irish craft.

West End Knitwear is conscious of its roots in the past; however, the company has its eyes firmly focused on the future. From its situation in the west end of Europe it takes pride in being the first company to manufacture garments which were originally designed for those engaged in a rugged, outdoor life. Some of these garments have been adapted for modern worldwide markets and are worn by men and women with pride and pleasure.

Both our Aran Crafts and Nua collections are manufactured to the highest standards using the finest quality materials: merino wool, pure new wool, linen/cotton, cashmere and introducing new super-soft merino wool. We have a large capacity in 3 and 5 gauge knitting and we produce for customers own brand labels
