READ THIS: THE CUBAN AFFAIR by Nelson DeMille

Cuba is in the news often today, but we chose this book not because of location (what could be better than Florida?  Or Manhattan?  Not much!) but because of our previous admiration for Nelson DeMille's work.  Peachy and her cousin, who is a teacher, both like Nelson.
Previously on Whom You Know, we've reviewed The Lion:
Also, Nelson made the brilliant move of switching to Simon and Schuster.
The Cuban Affair opens in Key West, a place that is one of the 12 places in America that the late and entirely awesome Charles Kuralt recommends in his America book.  That book definitely earns our highest recommendation.
For our sizable UK/Ireland audience, you should know that the fictional American protagonist, Daniel Graham MacCormick defines himself as Scots-Irish-English American.  You can call him Mac.

A veteran, and we do like how Nelson is writing on veterans, Mac lives a seemingly fabulously relaxed life in Key West chartering his boat to tourists.  Mac, what is your twitter account?!  Do you read Peachy Ahoy?

Our favorite character is Jack.  Though he is a fashion no, he is a personality yes.  He gets to the point: "You get one shot, asshole, then the guy you didn't shoot is going to take you down and shove that gun so far up your ass that the first round'll blow your tonsils out." p. 413.  Jack, if you come to life someday you may enjoy Bond, Peachy Bond.  Especially the part with Darren.

Mac is presented with an offer he MAY NOT be able to refuse.
The book is about this offer and subsequent POSSIBLE caper.
We will not revel the plot.
You will like it.
In terms of writing, clearly the plot is well-thought-out and the verbiage, parts and chapters are respectively well-organized.  The story carries well, so unless you are reviewing the book you may not notice however, when these elements work well, the story of course evolves at a higher level, seamlessly.  There is a large lead-up to the plot, but less so with the sex.
Note the protagonists are looking for something...so, if you like action and searches, this is up your alley.  Even your dog, especially if the dog reads, will be delighted to see that the treasure hunt goes beyond the documents to something to chew on.

The descriptions impressed us:
"I looked again at the beach.  The sand was almost iridescent, with a touch of blue and pink, and the water was a deep aquamarine.  But farther out, I could see whitecaps and wispy clouds scudding quickly from east to west.  There was a weather system on the way."
p.334

Nelson is earning a double feature in Laugh with Peachy.
It is actually quite hard to make Peachy laugh as most people are not as funny as they think they are.
Evidence of how you will Laugh with Peachy:
*page 5: "This is paradise.  Better than two tours in Allfuckedupistan."
What a way with words Mac has!
*page 49: "the romance of socialism."
Now THAT is funny!
*page 76: "Why do you want to go to Cuba?"
"North Korea was sold out."

Nelson writes about Yale accurately.  He correctly references the Whiffenpoofs p. 85 and we know because Peachy was a Perilhette and you know what Sarah Porter's brother was the President of...Yale.

For everyone that reads us and likes to eat at restaurants:
"...'We also have privately owned restaurants in America.'
'Yes, good.  But they are expensive.  Here, not so much.  And, everyone should try a government restaurant.'" p. 115
A government restaurant!?!  We never had such a thought.

Style matters and we like the shells that punctuate the chapters.
The book cover was also great.

The Cuban Affair by Nelson DeMille is Recommended by Whom You Know.

Nelson, you are invited for a direct interview in writing: you only may email peachydeegan@gmail.com

Simon & Schuster is proud to present THE CUBAN AFFAIR (Simon & Schuster; September 19, 2017; $28.99), the blistering new novel from Nelson DeMille, the legendary #1 New York Times bestselling author of Plum Island, Night Fall, and Radiant Angel. Not only does this mark DeMille’s move to a new publisher, but his twentieth novel introduces a new character as well: U.S. Army combat veteran Daniel “Mac” MacCormick, now a charter boat captain, who is about to set sail on his most dangerous cruise yet, from Key West to Havana, ninety miles and a world away.

Mac seems to have a pretty good life. At age thirty-five he’s living in Key West and owns a forty-two-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the Army as an infantry officer with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with a Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don’t tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac’s finances are more than a little shaky.

One day, Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West waiting for Carlos, a hotshot Miami lawyer heavily involved with anti-Castro groups. Carlos wants to hire Mac and The Maine for a ten-day fishing tournament to Cuba at the standard rate, but Mac is distrustful and turns him down. When the price goes up to two million dollars, Mac agrees to hear the deal and to meet Carlos’ clients—a beautiful Cuban-American woman named Sara Ortega, and a mysterious older Cuban exile, Eduardo Valazquez.

Mac soon learns there is sixty million American dollars hidden in Cuba, left by Sara’s grandfather when he fled Castro’s revolution. With the “Cuban Thaw” underway between Havana and Washington, Carlos, Eduardo, and Sara know it’s only a matter of time before someone finds the stash—by accident or on purpose. And Mac knows if he accepts this job, he’ll walk away rich…or not at all.

DeMille traveled to Cuba in 2015, and the book is not only filled with blistering adventure but fascinating facts about Cuba, including a dark, shocking secret that could freeze the Cuban Thaw. DeMille writes from his extensive research as well as his first-hand experiences from his visit, which included an interview with the acting U.S. Ambassador.

Brilliantly written, with his signature humor, fascinating authenticity, and heart-pounding pace, novel #20 reaffirms that Nelson DeMille is a true master of the genre.

READ THIS: The Lion by Nelson DeMille

Nelson DeMille is a favorite of the Deegan Family, and the Deegan girls of today could not wait to review The Lion.  Though it is just over 400 pages, The Lion is not to be tamed into closing the cover once opened.  You will read it voraciously and especially if you are in Manhattan, you will be sucked into how this modern age of if you see something, say something affects everything in our daily life here.  In this reality, the characters will excite and shock you, the tale will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat, and you will be so entranced your nearby glass of champagne will probably get warm.

Upon starting The Lion by Nelson DeMille, I was immediately drawn into the story.  I have read all of his books and each are wonderful, but this book drew me in and I had a hard time putting it down.  The main character, John Corey, is a character that DeMille has written into several of his books and is by far my favorite character.  In The Lion, Corey is on the case of Asad Kahlil again.  These two characters were pitted against each other in The Lion's Game.  Now Kahlil is back for revenge.  This plot has everything a sequel should have--page-turning, nail-biting suspense.  It is a must read!  I thoroughly enjoyed how DeMille used two story lines--John Corey and Asad Kahlil.  In doing this, you get to understand each more as a character.  I have been looking forward to this sequel for several years and I can say without a doubt, I was not disappointed.  DeMille always delivers a story that is outstanding.  I have always been a fan of DeMille's work and will continue to recommend his stories to many people I know.

Whom You Know highly recommends The Lion by Nelson DeMille!  It is an absolute MUST READ and we predict this will be another #1 bestseller.

The booksignings:http://www.whomyouknow.com/2010/05/upcoming-nightlight-from-new-york-times.html

The last time we saw John Corey in mortal conflict with his nemesis, the notorious Libyan terrorist Asad Khalil, was in the New York Times bestselling The Lion’s Game.  John Corey, a former NYPD Homicide detective and a special agent for the Anti-Terrorist Task Force, faced off with Khalil, otherwise known as “The Lion”—an internationally-known killing machine with the cunning of a lion and the bloodlust of a man.  Khalil had claimed to be defecting to the U.S., only to unleash the most horrific reign of terrorism ever to occur on American soil.  While Corey and his formidable partner, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, chased him across the country, Khalil methodically eliminated his victims one by one and then disappeared without a trace…

Now, in the eagerly awaited sequel THE LION, John Corey is back.  Unfortunately, so is Asad Khalil.  Since their last cat-and-mouse chase, the horrors of 9/11 have changed the world’s political landscape.  Khalil has returned to America to make good on his threats on assignment from his backers in the Middle East and to take care of unfinished business.  Khalil has revenge on his mind, and one of his goals is to kill John Corey and Kate Mayfield.   “The Lion” is once again on the loose in America, the bodies start piling up and the nation’s security is at great risk.  John Corey must invent a strategy that leaves no room for mistakes.  He must find and kill Khalil before Khalil kills him.

Told from the vantage points of both Corey and Khalil, THE LION brings fans the ultimate conflict between good and evil.  Filled with fast-paced action and driven by inimitable storytelling, this is DeMille at his very best.

#READTHIS #TheNemesisManifesto by #MoverandShaker #EricVanLustbader @EVanLustbader @MacmillanUSA

It's not who you know and it never has been.  It's WHOM YOU KNOW and we know Eric Van Lustbader!  It's high time we introduce you to Evan Ryder, female phenom of this brand new series to us.  Van Lustbader's illustrious career ensures this possesses tight, intelligent quality storytelling which is far superior to many overmarketed, underperforming books by marquee names.  Furthermore, as far as we see he does not co-author so what you see is primetime, grade A intelligently-crafted plotlines and speedy action sequences colored in by characters brilliant as they are physically gifted to keep up with the prescribed action.

Ravens are a central theme here in The Nemesis Manifesto, Evan's first hit.  Note that it is a conspiracy of them, akin to an aerie of eagles or a gaggle of geese.  It of course reminded us of The Tower of London, but note this is not a jolly holiday with Mary (Poppins).  We will not give it away but these birds fly in and out of the story with quintessential mystery.  Mindgames, lies and how injured one becomes and whom do you want to disclose your shortcomings to all are front and central in this spy thriller which should especially appeal to Blacklist enthusiasts (be sure to watch Sundays at 10pm and follow Dede Lovejoy on Twitter!)

We love the references to "straight out of Central Casting," and the James Bond references (see Bond, Peachy Bond), are entertained by the Entenmann's being flown in, and of course the Alice song (p. 261) is hilarious as we used to hear it at Thady Cons on Second Avenue and 48th before it sadly ended.  We were horrified that innocent stuffed animals are being recruited for Soviet dirty work!  The personification right down to the brown widow spider is so much fun.  The only problem we really have is page 287 should be WHOM you hired.  Mover and Shaker Rennie McQuilkin did his job well; someone here treats the whole world like his blooper exercises.

A page turner in every sense, The Nemesis Manifesto should be put on the screen, any size; the writing spells out a blockbuster movie and now the exclusive showing is your head.  Everyone knows Van Lustbader wrote Bourne...let your imagination run wild.  The crescendo at the end is perfection and it's so rewarding to keep up with the twists and turns throughout.

The Nemesis Manifesto is Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.

Evan is not a one-trick pony.
Stay tuned.

In The Nemesis Manifesto, Eric Van Lustbader, "the master of the smart thriller” (Nelson DeMille), delivers an epic and harrowing adventure of the predatory forces that are threatening the very fabric of democracy and kicks off a compelling new series with a singular new hero for our time.

Evan Ryder is a lone wolf, a field agent for a black-ops arm of the DOD, who has survived unspeakable tragedy and dedicated her life to protecting her country. When her fellow agents begin to be systematically eliminated, Evan must unravel the thread that ties them all together ... and before her name comes up on the kill list.

The list belongs to a mysterious cabal known only as Nemesis, a hostile entity hell-bent on tearing the United States apart. As Evan tracks them from Washington D.C. to the Caucasus Mountains, from Austria to a fortress in Germany -- where her own demons reside -- she unearths a network of conspirators far more complex than anyone could have imagined. Can Evan uproot them before Nemesis forces bring democracy to its knees?

#ReadThis #GirlsLikeUs by #CristinaAlger @PutnamBooks

It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we know The Banker's Wife, which was absolutely stellar and we highly recommended it last week:
We still have high hopes for The Trader's Husband.  Maybe Peachy will write it.

Perhaps we will check out her other books also. Though she has written more than just these two books and we believe we saw she is also coming out with a new one this year, Cristina Alger is having a sophomore act with Girls Like Us.

If you don't know what we're talking about with our word choice and verbiage, perhaps you didn't have Mover and Shaker Rennie McQuilkin in 10th and 11th grade who drilled all the SAT words into you.  Quite nicely!  They have STUCK in a big way, right MsCLP?  We must say on page 9 it should be: "whom I called Pop" because WHO is a blooper and a cardinal sin here.  Mr. McQuilkin is God of all English everything and a publisher himself.

Taking place in New York's Long Island, Girls Like Us is about murder and intrigue involving Nell, who is supposed to be in both physical recovery and mourning but finds herself mired in the tale of a Jeffrey Epstein twin.  The title might not be what you think it is-you don't want to be in a group of victims of murder!

Here's what we liked about this book:
*How can you not like a book that starts with a cooler of Guinness on the first page?
*Cristina has excellent taste in alcohol.  Macallan is referenced many times starting on page 11 we believe.
*The pace of the book is snappy and the plot evolves at a good pace.

Polaroid pictures, corruption, offshore bank accounts, and connecting the dots are hallmarks of what makes this story unique.  Do you ever really know someone!  Worth a read, check out Girls Like Us.

With last summer’s national bestseller, The Banker’s Wife, Cristina Alger offered readers an exciting glimpse into the world of international finance and, with it, reestablished herself as a fresh new voice in the thriller genre. The novel earned praise from the likes of Lee Child, Nelson DeMille, Chris Pavone, Mary Kubica, and more. A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and must-read summer thriller from the New York Post, Entertainment Weekly, and Parade, the novel is currently in development as a limited TV series by the team behind Homeland and starring Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl).

Now, Alger brings that same knack for high stakes thrills and sinuous suspense to one of PopSugar, Crime Reads, and PureWow’s most anticipated books of the summer, GIRLS LIKE US (G. P. Putnam’s Sons; July 2, 2019), which centers on the investigation of three grisly murders on Long Island, inspired by the real-life Gilgo Beach murders; introduces an unforgettable new heroine in FBI Agent Nell Flynn; and raises an impossible question: What happens when the primary suspect is your own father?

FBI Agent Nell Flynn hasn’t been home in ten years. Nell and her father, Homicide Detective Martin Flynn, have never had much of a relationship. And Suffolk County will always be awash in memories of her mother, Marisol, who was brutally murdered when Nell was just seven. When her father dies in a motorcycle accident, Nell returns to the house she grew up in so that she can spread his ashes and close his estate. At the behest of her father’s partner, Detective Lee Davis, Nell becomes involved in an investigation into the murders of two young Latina women in Suffolk County. The further Nell digs, the more likely it seems to her that her father should be the prime suspect—and that his friends on the police force are covering his tracks. Plagued by doubts about her mother’s murder and her own role in exonerating her father in that case, Nell can't help but ask questions about who killed Ria Sandoval and Adriana Marques and why. But she may not like the answers she finds—not just about those she loves, but about herself.

Set between the dark underbelly of Long Island’s South Shore and the elite circles of the Hamptons—a place Alger knows well as a part-time Quogue resident—GIRLS LIKE US is sure to be one of this summer’s must-read thrillers, confirming Cristina Alger’s place as a thriller writer to watch in the tradition of Harlan Coben and John Grisham.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Cristina Alger is the author of The Banker's Wife, The Darlings, and This Was Not the Plan. A graduate of Harvard College and NYU Law School, she worked as a financial analyst and a corporate attorney before becoming a writer. She lives in New York City with her husband and children.

About The New York Landmarks Conservancy: The New York Landmarks Conservancy is dedicated to celebrating, preserving and protecting the iconic buildings and unique neighborhoods that help define our vibrant and extraordinary City.

The Conservancy is the only private organization that provides both financial support and technical expertise in this effort. Since its founding in 1973, it has loaned and granted more than $36 million to help people save their homes, cultural, civic and religious institutions. No other group is engaged in such a hands-on way in sustaining the rich architectural fabric of the City. Our work creates jobs, promotes tourism and enhances the daily quality of life for all New Yorkers.

Each year, The Landmarks Conservancy honors distinguished New Yorkers as “Living Landmarks” for their contributions to the City.

2011 Living Landmarks Recipient Biographies
Lewis B. Cullman
Lewis B. Cullman, scion of a distinguished New York family, broke from the Cullman tobacco interests to forge innovations in business and philanthropy. He graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in government, earned an M.S. in meteorology from New York University, and served as an aerological officer in the Navy until the end of World War II. In 1963, he pioneered the first leveraged buyout. He was founder and president of Cullman Ventures, Inc., a diversified corporation that included the At-A-Glance Group, which at the height of its success produced nearly ninety percent of all commercial calendars, diaries and appointment books purchased in America. At that time, Mr. Cullman and his late wife Dorothy founded the Child Development Center in Sydney, NY – where At-A-Glance was located – which is now a model for early childhood care and education. In 1999, Mr. Cullman sold the company to devote his energies to philanthropy, serving on the boards of, among others, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Botanical Garden, the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and as Chairman (now Chairman Emeritus) of his favorite charity, Chess-in-the-Schools. Since 1986, Chess-in-the-Schools has taught the skills and strategies of chess to over 500,000 inner-city children, with many assisted by the organization’s College Bound program to prepare for, apply to and attend prestigious colleges. He has generously endowed and supported numerous New York City institutions and in recognition of his contributions, he is the recipient of the Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture.

In December 2010, Mr. Cullman married Louise Kerz Hirschfeld.
