Chacha Peachy: Irish Dance with Niall O'Leary

Irish Dance: It is both a sport and an art-form: Niall O'Leary teaches and performs Irish Dance and also organizes events looking to showcase Irish culture: Irish Dance is great exercise and lots of fun! Niall points out that he is very fortunate to be working with some great people, both in his student and professional dance groups...and we're not just saying that because he's Peachy Deegan's Irish dance teacher! On St. Patrick's Day when you turn on the Today Show, it is Niall who is teaching Matt and Meredith how to dance!

The Niall O'Leary School of Irish Dance in New York City holds classes for all levels and all ages. Both teachers, Niall O'Leary and Louise Corrigan, are champion dancers from Ireland. The youngest student in the school is three years old. One of the oldest students, Lily Corcoran Pineiro, is celebrating 50 years as an Irish dancer this Fall!

"One of the challenges of teaching is to find out everyone's learning style and to encourage them to achieve more than they thought they could. We have banned the phrase 'I can't' in dance class" says Niall. Dancers also perform at events ranging from baby showers and community celebrations to major concerts.

The Niall O'Leary Irish Dance Troupe, a professional Irish dance company based in NYC, perform up and down the east coast at concerts, festivals, and corporate events. The dancers are all top performers:their high-energy, highly intricate footwork is also in demand internationally: the have also toured Japan and have further international trips in the works. They recently did a concert on the boardwalk in Atlantic City NJ and have a number of shows coming up in NYC in the Fall.

As he is also an architect, Niall is particularly interested in structure, rhythm, and interpreting space. "Every time you do a dance, you move through a space differently: if you find yourself in a beautiful space for the first time, dancing is a great way to help understand it."
