Tasty Tidbits: Cafe D'Alsace

Last night Peachy Deegan put on her fabulously comfortable SILVER 925 Kenneth Cole pumps (go online to www.kennethcole.com to pre-order a pair (or two) of the SPECIAL EDITION SILVER 925 styles we recommend them) and with part of her dining panel in tow, scouted out a new candidate for Tasty Tidbits: Cafe D'Alsace. These two girls have been dining together for many years now ever since Addie's in the lower dining hall...and we were pleased with what we saw and sampled at this French Upper East Side institution of culinary pleasure.

With Cafe d'Alsace, Simon Oren (Nice Matin, Marseille) brings his expertise in regional French dining to the Upper East Side. Chef Philippe Roussel (Montparnasse, Chelsea Bar and Bistro) interprets the cuisine of his father's native Alsace with a contemporary New York flair and was full of interesting banter and exquisite items to eat. Complementing the cuisine is one the city's most distinguished beer selections - including a dedicated beer Sommelier to assist you in selecting the perfect lager, ale or bock to compliment to your meal.

Chef Philippe Roussel is dedicated to perfecting the traditional Alsation cuisine. With classic dishes such as Chacroute Garnie, Beakoffe, Truit au Riesling, Polet Rotis, Goat Cheese Tatin and Tarte Flambee, you are assured to enjoy and experience this unique regional menu. We sampled the Alsacian Goat Tatin with carmelized onion and puff pastry. For two people that don't care for Goat Cheese, we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious this was! Maybe it was that the cheese was from Loire, as was the Sauvignon Blance from the Sancerre region, unoaked.

The warm tomato salad was perfect for a summer night! We also sampled escargot served with garlic, parsley and butter and it was to die for. A lovely brioche -poached eggs and bacon followed this, and then it was time for dessert. The apple tart with carmelized cream topped off with vanilla ice cream, the grapefruit dipped in chocolate and the chocolate tart with sea salt from Brittany completed the visit.

Lindsay with the awesome hair and Yaron were gracious bartenders. We found it to be an authentic French ambiance with a laid-back setting. The colored glass bottles attractively arranged around the top of the bar add beautiful ambiance. Cafe D'Alsace is a perfect haven of class that stands out from frat bar after frat bar in its neighborhood and we like what we see. Owners Philippe Roussel (also Executive Chef) and David Sekons are knowledgeable, talented and friendly and you should say hello to them on your visit to Cafe D'Alsace.

Cafe D'alsace also offers an award winning wine collection. The wine list features over 500 bottles and specializes in Alsace and other French regions. A very skilled and knowledgeable staff is on hand to help you navigate through the extensive wine and beer lists.

Alsace is at the cross roads of Europe and brings together great culinary ideas and traditions. Cafe D'Alsace makes these treasures available to you and Whom You Know looks forward to reviewing it!
