There finally is a reason to go north of 96th street!
ABV has blindsided us with their stellar quality cuisine and genuine care for being the best, which should come as no surprise as Alexis is an alum of the FCI-you know we have recommended L'Ecole:
and Alexis even knows about Dave Arnold's mellow lobsters, one of Peachy's favorite cocktail party conversation stories:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/10/daylight-second-annual-new-york.html.  But when we were checking out ABV last time, we didn't know that.  And now it all makes sense!  They might be called Alcohol by Volume but their food is equally impressive.

ABV was first featured in Terrific Takeout:

and later graduated to Tasty Tidbits:

We are pleased to announce that it has joined the ranks of Peachy's Picks.

Dining at ABV is like tasting diamonds when you are wearing your oldest, most adored blue jeans.   It is super casual but don't let that fool you-the total quality of the cuisine - not to mention extreme value which we don't look for but will tell you when we see it - combined with the crazy good creativity of the chef will wow you to no end.

Can we say Foie Gras
Fluffernutter
?!

You heard that right, so stay with us and just keep reading.
Tommee tippee watch out because Peachy has a new sippy cup:
This Sippy Cup has a wonderfully spicky kick and it consists of cocchi vermouth di torino, spicy ginger syrup, angostura bitters and lime.  You absolutely should try it - the adventurous choices ABV offers should not worry you one bit because we surmise you will be in love at first sip.
Sarah and Alexis surprised us with these two cocktails to begin with, and we are pleased they did.
Not to be outdone by Mr. Sippy, the short and sweet Fig & Thistle was a mysterious complexity of fig preserves, lemon and cardamon.  A bit darker, it was equally amazing.  There is only thing we can think of that could be done to improve their cocktail list (hint, hint, Alexis!  It begins with a P.)
Peachy began with Carignano: 6 Mura, Giba, Carignano del Sulcis, Sardegna Italy 2009...and for the inquiring minds of our readers, this option is 13.5% abv.  It had dark notes of berries that we tasted and the layers of these notes combined to form an Italian thumbs-up that we seek.
One reason why you must sprint to ABV pronto is that the scallops, a winter item on the menu, will soon be leaving us.  This is Peachy's favorite item at ABV without a doubt, and though she liked them in the takeout review, she simply adored the flavor, the sauce, the perfect searing of the scallops themselves, the tender mushrooms, the cute dish and the presentation....the list is long.  Cremini mushrooms, cauliflower cream and porcini vinaigrette grace the lovely scallops-so smooth and creamy, this small plate is a total dream come true!  Peachy has never even cared for cauliflower cream before, but she does here!
A little closer, they wanted to smile for the camera as they are complete stars:

The atmosphere around you is suitable to hang out with friends at as communal tables decorate the compact space, and it also would be terrific for a date.  We were lucky enough to sit at the back booth which we'd say is the best seat in the house-if it's available we highly recommend that spot!
Sarah, our server who was on the ball all evening, suggested we try the Baby Octopus as it is her most favorite dish at ABV:
The pan fried roasted purple potatoes were stellar and the octopus that rested on a bed of avocado puree was King of the Sea and then King of our stomachs.  Pickled celery also joined the party on the plate and the real winner was the American Sturgeon roe-applause, standing ovation, we love it at ABV!
As a large plate, Peachy Deegan opted for the Vintage Sirloin, which we can see is a total modern classic.  Paired with pickled cippolini, baby turnip and parsnip, pickled mustard seeds, baby leaks and Bayley Hazen puree, we think it is a smashing main course.  The sirloin was tender and on par with many of the fine dining places we've frequented, and just look at how stunning the presentation is.  We cannot overemphasize how tremendous the dining experience is at ABV for such a laid-back, casual place.

And if you haven't had a Foie Gras Fluffernutter in your life, all we have to say is what are you waiting for?  The bold creative choices that this chef makes work.  Wonder bread, hazelnut crumble and sour apple work in tandem with of course fluff and peanut butter to make Fois Gras even more tantalizing to your taste buds.  This is a celebration on a plate and though this is a medium plate, we chose to have it for dessert.  Peachy sipped on a lovely Moscato to complement this course from Piedmont, Italy.  We also tried Asparagus Ice Cream, which certainly has become a preferred way to get your vegetables!!!

Our esteemed panelist adds:
I personally have never been past 90th street before because I've never had a reason to. ABV has become my reason for traveling past 90th Street! This brand new hot spot has only been open for 2 months and already has regular customers who are quite enthusiastic about the wine bar and restaurant. ABV is definitely unique for the area and has been greeted warmly by the neighborhood! The atmosphere is comfortable with its exposed brick walls and wooden accents. The lighting is perfect for those who want the lights low, but don't want to struggle with reading the menu. The restaurant has quite an extensive wine menu with four different wines on tap! This is yet another unique concept that works well for ABV. I tried the Pinot Noir Blush and found it to be smooth and very easy to drink. We also had the opportunity to try two ABV cocktails that are favorites amongst the staff called "fig and thistle" and "sippy cup." Both drinks were extremely refreshing! The sippy cup had a nice kick to it from the spicy ginger syrup while the fig and thistle was slightly sweet and refreshing from the lemon.

For my small plate I had the veal sweet bread which also had apricot, sushi rice, wasabi leaves and toasted sesame seeds. The dish was like nothing I've ever tried before! The bread was very sweet with a slight crunch and the sushi rice was a great way to tone down the sweetness of the bread. The wasabi leaves on top of the dish gave it a nice added texture and freshness. We also had the opportunity to try the baby octopus which came strongly recommended by our gracious server, Sarah.

I'm so glad she brought this dish over because it was incredible! It was pan fried octopus with roasted purple potatoes, pickled celery, ginger soy dressing, avocado purée and American sturgeon roe . Another example of a dish with many different ingredients that aren't normally blended together but were actually a genius combination! For my main dish I ordered the Plymouth chicken.

The chicken itself was so nice and juicy and had a nice slightly fried skin to it which again, added great texture to the dish. The cheddar polenta was a great, unique alternative to mashed potatoes which I normally love but appreciated the new concept. The asparagus was cooked to perfection and went perfectly with the fried egg on top of it. Overall an excellent main dish! For dessert we decided that we had to try the foie gras fluffernutter because it was obviously another unique concept that, based on the previous entrees was most likely a home run. It certainly was and is a dish that I will be thinking about until I get to have it again!

We also had the opportunity to try asparagus ice cream, which was also served with white peach and chocolate earth. If vegetables are a must, what better way to eat them than in the form of ice cream! And delicious ice cream at that! ABV is a restaurant that I hope will eventually expand and open additional locations in the city soon! Everyone should have an AVB near them to enjoy often.
