Epic, which can be a word overused today, doesn't even begin to approach the pinnacle of excellence achieved in tribute to the world's most popular superhero in the cinematographic achievement: MAN OF STEEL.  Not everyone can recreate a classic, but Warner Brothers can.  And since when did we start writing about just anybody?  Man of Steel
releases to the American public this Friday, June 14, 2013.  Be there. We loved it.

God of storytelling F. Scott Fitzgerald himself, who of course built the foundation for the last Warner Brothers hit The Great Gatsby, said there are no second acts in American lives, and perhaps he read Superman too as the historical birth of the character dates back to Fitzgerald's last two years.   In saying that, the ever-wise Scott knew that Superman was born in Krypton, not America, and the life he lives in Man of Steel is his best yet
.
Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster and first appearing in the comic book Action Comics #1, published on April 18, 1938, Superman quickly became a cultural phenomenon, winning fans around the world in live-action and animated form in nearly every known entertainment medium.  (We believe our family member who just beat cancer is also Superman as they share that April 18th birthday.)  In feature films, TV shows, radio, video games, social media and literature, Superman has battled some of the greatest villains of all time.

And Superman not only has been given a second life, in Man of Steel he emphatically reigns supreme over all other previous versions of Superman.

As avid readers know, we only publish the positive points.  If miscasting happens we don't tell you, but know that Peachy Deegan will sit through an entire flick being irked by poor casting choices in lesser films (get excited to hear what we'll have to say about HBO's Casting By).  In Man of Steel, the casting was entirely flawless.  Huge props to Henry for mastering the American accent-your performance is "spot on" as we believe you'd say in the UK.  Henry Cavill stars in the role of Clark Kent/Kal-El, and the film also stars four-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams ("The Master"), Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road"), Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner ("Dances with Wolves"), Oscar® nominee Diane Lane ("Unfaithful"), Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne ("What's Love Got to Do with It"), Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, and Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe ("Gladiator").  This All-Star cast interacts together in a complimentary fashion with no egos getting in the way.   Every single one of them absolutely kills it.  You'll see that cornfields are agreeing with Kevin Costner, once again!

"In the world of Super Heroes, Superman is the completely uncompromising figure who exists to represent the best that all of us can be," director Zack Snyder states. "He is the ideal; he's what we strive for, that magical, golden god, the kind of icon that has extended beyond the comics world and into all of popular culture."

From a script standpoint, Man of Steel hits the right marks on all points of literary-action-movie virtue as well.  The prevailing theme of good versus evil hit home, and this is a theme we all know and love in a good story.  The characters were well-developed and conflict and triumph played out in hypnotic fashion.  We believe this is a great film for older kids too as it shows you that if you are different as a child, you can emerge victorious as an adult, and who knows you might be superperson too.  The flashbacks throughout the film make sense and add to the overall strong nature of the story.  It also illustrates the point that people are afraid of what they don't understand, and hopefully it will motivate those in the dark to think outside the box in life.  Obviously, we love the glorification of the journalism profession.

One of the best lines:

JONATHAN KENT
You're the answer, son. You're the answer to 'are we alone in the universe?'

I have to believe that you were sent here for a reason, and even if it takes the rest of your life,

you owe it to yourself to find out what that reason is.

All special effects were just right for Goldilocks Peachy, and they affect each scene strikingly without overpowering the script.  They were not too ridiculous and over-the-top, and they were not lame and soft.  If you think this must be seen in 3D, maybe it should, however, we were entirely pleased seeing it in 2D and felt we didn't miss a thing.  We particularly liked the underwater scenes at the start,  and the scenery from fantasy to reality was breathtaking. Visually, the images made sense and were stunning.  We particularly liked graphics used throughout with color contrasts, and the geometric shapes were beautiful to us and fitting for this type of film.  The cinematography is so well done that capturing something as simple as catching the raindrops in the clothespin bucket is beautiful in Man of Steel.  The sound effects were all appropriate and fit in well, which is what the goal should be.

Amy Adams, who delivers a characteristic superlative performance herself, is going to be the envy of every girl around the world when
Clark Kent/Kal-El says to her: "I can do things that other people can't."  If you are a girl that thinks you don't do science fiction, believe us, you can do it with Henry Cavill starring, and playing his part brilliantly.  Henry, call Peachy maybe.

The costumes were great, and this time the superhero suits evoked a bit of a snakeskin-like texture to us.  We quote:
IF THE SUIT FITS...

What's the 'S' stand for?

CLARK/KAL-EL
It's not an 'S.' In my world, it means 'hope.'

LOIS
Well here, it's an 'S.'

Finally, we applaud the patriotism this movie evokes in the positive lights it casts the military in.

"Superman is one of the truly special figures man has created throughout history," says Henry Cavill. "He stands for hope, for the ability to conquer adversity against all odds. That's something we can always hold onto, no matter where we are in life or what's going on in the world. We will always face hardships in one way or another, and therefore hope will always play a significant part in our lives. To take on that mantle of hope as Superman was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

"She recognizes there isn't one truth, that there's truth from different perspectives," Amy Adams comments, adding that, because of her ambitions, and perhaps because of the nature of her job, "Lois had lost trust and belief in goodness. To see and feel that Clark's intent is so pure is reinvigorating for her; it's almost like a rebirth for her. I think it's very interesting that it takes this person from another world to make her more human."

Finally, thank you to Jay Leno for interviewing Henry and Russell last week on your show (This included a great story about how the two actors met ages ago when Henry was playing an extra and Russell told him when he asked-You make a lot of money as an actor but you're treated like shit, which was followed up with a nice care package.  In any event, all the training work you did for Man of Steel paid off for each of you in those costumes!). We watched both interviews before seeing the movie, and they were so terrific it made us make this film a priority in our lives.  Be sure to make it a priority in yours, as well if you believe in HOPE, and want to be INSPIRED.  You know how that song goes, so let us tell you: You will go crazy, and though the script says
Clark Kent/Kal-El
, you will call him Superman.

Man of Steel has earned Whom You Know's Highest Recommendation.  If you want to experience a modern classic of excellence from start to finish, worship at the church of Warner Brothers and see it on the big screen starting tomorrow!

Thank You Warner Brothers Pictures-We are Honored to work with you!
