Daniel H. Weiss, President and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, announced the endowment of the position of Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, made possible by a donation from Chinese investor and philanthropist Wendy Yu on behalf of her Hong Kong-based company, Yu Holdings.

The endowment will exist in perpetuity at The Costume Institute, and Andrew Bolton, currently Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute,will become the position's first incumbent, assuming the title of Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, effective immediately. The Met has 50 endowed positions in its curatorial, conservation, and other departments.

"We are immensely grateful to Wendy Yu for so generously funding this position at The Costume Institute," said Mr. Weiss. "Her support will make it possible for The Met to broaden our expertise in the field, advancing our scholarship and conservation and increasing the scope of The Costume Institute's groundbreaking work to enhance global knowledge of fashion as an art form."

Yu Fashion, the division of Yu Holdings dedicated to supporting the fashion industry, plans to launch a program of initiatives with The Costume Institute in China, which will include a series of educational talks by Mr. Bolton in partnership with a local institution to provide insight into The Costume Institute's curatorial process. Yu Fashion will also connect The Met with Chinese art and fashion communities and form a consortium of Chinese individuals and institutions with the goal of funding acquisitions by The Costume Institute.

"My mission, through Yu Fashion, is to support the fashion industry and one-of-a-kind talents such as Mr. Bolton," said Ms. Yu. "We will be providing a cross-continent opportunity for cultural exchange as well as increasing awareness of The Costume Institute in China."

Wendy Yu, a Chinese fashion and technology investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, is the Founder and CEO of Yu Holdings ( Ms. Yu's vision is to build a bridge between China and the rest of the world, with a focus on connecting investment and philanthropy through innovation, and to form an ecosystem that enables strategic, creative, and cultural exchange on a global scale.

Ms. Yu founded and became the CEO of Yu Capital, an investment funding company, in 2015 to support fashion, lifestyle, and technology enterprises. Its most recent investments include fashion designer Mary Katrantzou, Tujia (China's largest short-term property rental firm), and Didi Kuaidi (the biggest taxi-hailing firm in China). Other investments include Fashion Concierge, a personal shopping app dedicated to sourcing sought-after fashion items, and Bottletop, a sustainable accessories brand.

In January 2018, Yu Holdings was launched as an evolution of Yu Capital, integrating two new divisions—Yu Fashion and Yu Culture—that are dedicated to supporting creative industries and forming bridge opportunities with China.

After completing her degree in fashion management at the London College of Fashion, Ms. Yu completed executive programs at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford in the U.K. and at Columbia University in the U.S. She was later appointed Vice Chairman of Mengtian Group, her family's business, in 2015, and continues to serve in the role.

As a notable philanthropist and patron of the arts, Ms. Yu is involved in a number of charities and arts organizations globally, and was named Young Achiever of the Year in 2015 at the Mulan awards for her work and her positive influence on Chinese women.

Andrew Bolton
Andrew Bolton became Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute in January 2015. He joined The Costume Institute in 2002 as Associate Curator and was promoted to Curator in 2006. Exhibitions Mr. Bolton worked on with Harold Koda include Dangerous Liaisons (2004), Chanel(2005), Poiret (2007), and Schiaparelli and Prada (2012); alone, he curated AngloMania (2006), Superheroes (2008), American Woman (2010), Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2011), Punk (2013), China: Through the Looking Glass (2015), Manus x Machina (2016), and Rei Kawakubo /Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between (2017). His next exhibition, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, opens on May 10 and will be his and The Costume Institute's largest show to date.

China: Through the Looking Glass (815,992 visitors) and Manus x Machina (752,995 visitors) are The Costume Institute's most popular shows and among the Museum's top 10 most visited. 

Prior to joining The Met, Mr. Bolton worked at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London for nine years, first as Curatorial Assistant in the Far Eastern Department and then as Senior Research Fellow in Contemporary Fashion. During this period, he also curated exhibitions at the London College of Fashion.

Born in Great Britain, Mr. Bolton earned a B.A. in social anthropology and an M.A. in non-Western art from the University of East Anglia. He became a Visiting Professor at the University of the Arts in London in 2007 and received an Honorary Fellowship in 2016. In 2017, he received an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Art.

Mr. Bolton has received several awards, including the Fashion Group International Oracle Award in 2016, the Vilcek Prize in Fashion in 2015, the Best Monographic Exhibition from the Association of Art Museum Curators for Alexander McQueen in 2011, and the Richard Martin Award for Excellence from The Costume Society of America for American Woman in 2010 and also for Poiret(with Harold Koda) in 2007.
