It's a bird, it's a plane, it's SUPERMAN!!!!! In five flicks fantastic to entertain all about Superman, Warner Brothers has once again wowed us in their 100th birthday year. Previously on Whom You Know, Man of Steel earned our Highest Recommendation.
Of course, unique to us and others in journalism is that don't forget: Superman is a journalist! It is not at all lost on us that Clark Kent is a reporter. We love the Christopher Reeve story and how he worked with and was close to Katharine Hepburn. Of course, the Daily Planet offices (The New York Daily News) are in Manhattan, which is Metropolis here. 42nd Street plays its part well and everyone will recognize the globe and Grand Central. It was filmed in five weeks in New York, and also battled the challenge of the blackout in the 70s.
A good reporter doesn't get great stories: they make them great so says Lois Lane! Many in the media today could learn from her.
In the second film, you'll see two versions and the fact that demand from the public made the second second come alive is extraordinary-the Dick Donner version. Definitely listen to his interview on this and we love how in the dedication to Reeve they use whom correctly.
We love how the second starts in France with the Eiffel Tower (note a real life Superman of Cinema is auctioning art at Bonhams now in New York: Alain Delon) and the New York era it encompasses is rendolent of our pal Mayor Koch. It's moving to see the World Trade Center Twin Towers in the Skyline.
The third and fourth wrap it up, and you'll get a kick out of the historic technology in them and Mariel Hemingway was amazing in the last one: her character's amazing true commitment to journalism was laudable.
You absolutely cannot miss the bonus content. Do you realize that Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan and Superman are the three most famous people that never lived? Christopher Reeve's documentary is priceless and we also liked how he visited Andy Warhol's place.
