"At the turn of the 20th century, financier J. Pierpont Morgan commissioned architect Charles McKim to design a library next to his New York home. The East Room of the library includes walnut- and fruitwood-paneled bookcase doors that conceal access to spiral staircases leading to upper tiers of the stacks while preserving shelf space. The doors are fitted with slender brass handles.On the same floor, Morgan’s study contains movable bookcases mounted on brass rails. The bookcases can be shifted to reveal a concealed storage area for books behind them."
